Swing and spin of the ball depends upon its age, so it's compulsory to return the ball. For example new ball is shiny and good for pacers, old ball is tough and good for spinners.

Surprisingly that has never been a problem in cricket. The crowd always returns the ball.

@@prdp In baseball culture we don't really see that as a problem. An MLB game can go through 60-70 balls on average and the majority of those aren't actually hit into the stands.
