**********
After spending 8 weeks of doing :-D :
-VERY intensive running in of 50hrs per cartridge,
-subsequent intensive sweet spot listening and
-off-field, off-centre casual listening to get used to and for me to soak into each of their tonal characteristics,
I have finally been able to release the results of the cartridges! And thank you friends for your patience.
Group A of USD$70-80 cartridges consist of:
-AudioTechnica AT100e,
-Goldring Elan,
-Grado Black,
-Ortofon OM5e,
-Sumiko Oyster :-D
Group B of USD$90-120 cartridges consist of:
-AudioTechnica AT120eB,
-Goldring Elektra,
-Grado Green,
-Nagaoka MP-110,
-Ortofon 2M Red,
-Shure M97xE,
-Sumiko Black Pearl :-)
Much hard work,
and it is my fervent wish that the honest-to-goodness manufacturers that come up with truly brilliant products will be recognised and earn their rightful sales from us consumers, who have been constantly blighted by the advertisement dollars and “obligations” audio magazines (both newsstand and online audio sites) have towards the manufacturers and retailers who pay them advertisement monies. Many of my friends here all over the world have told me many stories and situations about such “obligations”. A “ring of dubious network” they even put it. I hear all of you, my friends. And thank you very much.
I came out with my own monies to do this review: buying the 12 cartridges from musicdirect.com and lpgear.com websites to maintain neutrality to all of my local retailers.
I have also painstakingly bought 12 Jelco HS-25 cartridges, adjustable for AZIMUTH.
All 12 cartridges have been EACH FITTED ON TO each’s OWN JELCO HS-25 high quality magnesium headshell with Litz wires.
EVERY CARTRIDGE has been painstakingly adjusted for:
-OVERHANG,
-AZIMUTH,
-TRACKING FORCE,
-VTA and more accurately, the correct STYLUS RAKE ANGLE of 92degrees.
I am thus been able to do the critical A-B-C-D-E-B-E-C-A-D-C-A-E-D-B QUICK CHANGING AND QUICK SWAPPING OF CARTRIDGES WITH THE ABOVE PREPARATIONS.
So that I am able to ASSESS and COMPARE & CONTRAST all the cartridges in whichever fashion I want to zoom in on, VERY QUICKLY and not leaving to IMAGINATION AND MEMORY of how each cartridge sounded during this critical A-B-C-D-E-B-E-C-A-D-C-A-E-D-B COMPARISONS.
It has been all, a very long and tedious process, and making sure it is totally fair, and that every cartridge is given the precise measurements/alignments to shine.
The AUDITIONING PROCESS includes listening through fitment to both sets of my personal turntables:
1--- TECHNICS SL1200Mk5 with Herbie's Way Excellent Platter Mat,
2---- AVID SEQUEL with SME V Arm:
AND OUTPUT to:
1--- the Schiit Mani phonostage,
2--- the Avid Pulsare2 phonostage with adjustable capacitance settings to countercheck for optimum cartridge performance:
As stated by their respective manufacturers' :
- AudioTechnica AT100e = 100-200pF
- AudioTechnica AT120eb = 100-200pF
- Goldring Elan = 150-400pF
- Goldring Elektra = 150-400pF
- Grado Black = not stated by manufacturer
- Grado Green = not stated by manufacturer
- Nagaoka MP-110 = not stated by manufacturer
- Ortofon OM5e = 200-600pF
- Ortofon 2M Red = 150-300pF
- Shure M97xE = 200-300pF
- Sumiko Oyster = not stated by manufacturer
- Sumiko Black Pearl = not stated by manufacturer
The AUDITIONING PROCESS includes listening through:
- main hall system through Vitus RI-100 integrated amplifier and B&W804D speakers (front-ported),
- main bedroom through the Aktimate Blue active speakers (rear-ported),
- study room through the Dali Kubik Free + Extra stereo pair of active speakers (sealed box design).
Thank you Friends, I HEREBY PRESENT TO ALL OF YOU,
THE COMPREHENSIVE 12 CARTRIDGE REVIEW SERIES:
- GROUP A USD$70-80 : FIVE CARTRIDGES SHOOT OUT,
- AND GROUP B USD$90-120 : SEVEN CARTRIDGES SHOOT OUT.
Sincerely,
Ian.

Another great review my friend. I echo your sentiments on this cartridge. To put it simply, while there were aspects I liked, overall I just found it "muddy," with a lack of clarity and crispness that the AT120eB offers. I still think it is, all things considered, a better cartridge than the AT120eB, but not by a very wide margin. Here as well, for those on the fence, I would recommend investing more and bumping up to what I envision will be your next tier, with cartridges like the AT440MLB and the 2M Blue. Once again, thank you for your effort, time and dedication. My apologies for being a bit late in responding as well. Life happens sometimes and emergencies called me away.

Moko is so cute. Great review. Can't wait to see the reviews for the Nagaoka, Elektra and Grado. I have heard in forums people say that the 2M is very clear, clinical sounding like a CD but not warm. Your detailed review helped and also shows me the weight of the cart may be too much for my turntable compared to other carts. Thank you and see you again next week.

I'm really enjoying all the cartridge reviews. Great job as always. Also glad to see that Nipper is watching! He watches over my system as well. I previously had the 2M Red installed in my system. Have since removed it. I always felt it to be a bit harsh / unrefined / strident in the upper midrange / treble registers.

Thanks Ian, one question. What settings for anti-skate are you typically using on the SL-1200 for all the carts you are testing? Do you set it directly equivalent to VTF or are you setting it to a somewhat lower value, (say 50%?) Just curious. Are you using some sort of measuring gauge, (i.e. Wally Skater?) Thanks.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
Dear Alan, I am setting directly equivalent to VTF at first...and do vary it between roughly 60%, up to 100% of the VTF to catch any significant changes in sound quality. You are right, 50% is a good setting. I don't have the Wally Skater :-D... I want to mainly engage the new young vinylphiles and vinylphiles who want something affordable and also not wanting to be too bothered with excessive technicalities like sometimes some of us hardcore vinylphiles would be engaged in. The background work may be done...but also taking care not to present in such a way that the mindset of that 99% of vinylphiles operate in. That is, no audiophilia nervosa. It is quite tedious to do this project and present it carefully taking care of everybody's feelings and directions. But I really sacrificed a lot of my own monies to do this as a service to the community. You know :-D I spent US$2,800 on this cartridge project, to get 12 carts, +3 replacement carts (broke 3 of them accidentally) +12 HS-25 headshells + much delivery fees from musicdirect and lpgear all the way to Singapore. I sacrificed selling my beloved rp6 to also fund this project. My wife supports my decision to be of service, and that will be my one and overriding commitment I have for the Vinyl Community of friends :-D... It is so heartening to have friends like you who watch over me, and care for the community at large. I really want to make it happen. Make friends bind and help vinyl music appreciation to reach a higher level of quality to that 99% of normal vinylphiles, but still taking care of the technicalities behind the scenes. Sometimes it leaves me breathless... But I will persevere. Best Regards to you my friend Alan, we are considered old friends in this internet age!!! Hahahaha :-D... Thank you Alan. - ian.

Hi Ian, thanks for your great message and for your incredible commitment to the Vinyl Community which we all really appreciate! Most of us realize the major undertaking this has been. I must say that frankly I was surprised and quite impressed that you decided to take on this arduous task at your own expense in order to benefit us all! Maybe when the entire study is done, you can resell the slight used carts and duplicate headshells that you don't plan to keep on Ebay to at least try to re-coup some of your original investment. BTW - I don't own a Wally Skater either. I believe that there's a point where way too much audiophile obsession can interfere with or get in the way of enjoying the music. For anti-skating, I pretty much already follow your lead on this. I typically back off a bit to start then "tune" by ear playing special attention to the right channel sound / balance / any audible distortion, etc on known recordings. What I have found is the following phenomenon that is somewhat difficult to describe in words. If when lowering the stylus into the lead-in groove there is a noticeable audible sense of "gravitas" once the stylus settles in then you're probably close to an ideal combined setting of VTF and anti skate. Additionally, when lifting the tonearm while the record is playing with the cue level, if the lift-off is clean, straight up and actually somewhat silent, (no exiting groove noise,) then the anti-skate setting as we say in the USA "is in the right ballpark." Keep up the great work! Please also be sure to thank your wife for her continued support & patience to all your efforts! Your vinyl friend from across the earth. Alan

Another outstanding review, Brother Ian. I am sad to hear that this cartridge did not perform up to expectations, as I nearly bought one a few months ago, based on the great reputation and word of mouth this cartridge has received. Hi Ian. Now this was the review I was waiting for as this is my current cart as you know. I have to say that until your review, I did not notice some of the nuances you mentioned. But just listening to some music earlier (before seeing your new video) I did observe the things you mentioned, specially the midrange and treble comments. Your review was spot on. I truly enjoy this cart when I first bought it (upgraded from an AT-95e), but now I know more about its natural characteristics. Thanks again for a very educational video my friend! -- Jelo

+Jelo Berbano ... :-D again.. my reply to fellow friends below Shareef K.: "the 2M Red is a pretty good cart, it is far from being bad at all. It is just that the competitors have the right to be better and they are indeed better. Being popularly distributed by ProJect does not mean it is the best cart in its class. Many things within the industry go beyond sound quality: Ortofon, being an industrial giant, Ortofon will definitely be able to barter a deal with ProJect better! Better than the smaller players like Nagaoka, Grado and Goldring. ...For, we need to ask the quation: "How many cartridge manufacturers are able to cope with ProJect's appetite for a mass produced cartridge (knowing that ProJect sells about a million turntables a year!! (the most number of turntables a year for any turntable manufacturer!!! even more than Rega!!! :-D ) ?" ...The answer is, only Ortofon. But that is NO guarantee that its sound quality is the best in its class. We must understand the sheer marketing might and ability of Ortofon. I started off too expecting the 2M Red to trounce the rest, but it very clearly, didn't. We can do much better with our monies. The answer lies in the Nagaoka MP-110, Goldring Elektra and the Grado Green. They are much, much better. Your choice of the Grado Black is top notch as well. Rest easy with your choice. It is a superb cartridge at only US$75. AMAZING!!! :-D Many friends here can attest to it as well. They have been very happy with it." And to friend Acidhouse: "......Also, for those who have been listening to the 2M Blue, 2M Bronze and 2M Black, they will find the 2M Red deficient in areas and the observations made are in relativity. Same goes with the experience of listening and being pampered so much by the Green, Elektra and MP110... that one just has to be aware that better sound are indeed present and can come at the same price bracket too! :-D......" Rest easy, you are getting the hang of it brother!!!

Your assessments of the 120eb and the 2m red are very accurate and I own them both. The 120eb is better for string instruments, ie jazz, but lacks the bass of the 2m red, but the treble will tear your head off at moderate volume levels, a very fatiguing cartridge in my opinion. The 120eb just has too much treble and like you said the 2m red is rolled off. Both cartridges are what I would consider boring and I haven't used either in a while, the 120eb for some years. Every thing I had read about the Shure fits your assessments rolled off highs and boring mids, with excellent bass, but I heard that you could upgrade the stylus with the Jico stylus on it, which is suppose to be better, also the reds body can be changed to anything in the 2m line. I heard the 2m blue was pretty good. Great review as usual.

He divulged he too has left the Shure m97xE and 2M Red behind as well...but he agreed that with no background reference to any other carts...the Shure and the 2M Red do sound fabulous...but that is until he tasted the Grado and Nagaoka. We all know we can do much better :-D . Well you're smart enough to have chosen the Grado long before we did!!! Thank you my friend. Thank you so much for doing this review all I've heard about this cart was how amazing it was and it should be the cart to buy when you upgrade. Judging from the sound quality of it here I think I may pass the 2m red. It seems like my final decision on what cart to get for my upgrade so far is the grado black. I guess I will have to wait for the final cart reviews to make my complete final decision.

I love your review videos I would have to agree with your assessment of the 2m red I’ve had mine for about 8 months it’s one of those carts that is very picky with what records are played the one thing that I find annoying with the red is it’s bass response It does not handle records with lots of bass frequencies it tends to get bloated sounding bass during loud passages I often find myself turning down the bass tone knob on my hifi system to compensate But with that said I do enjoy the slightly rolled off treble frequency response of the red with really well pressed mixed and mastered vinyl I sometimes am amazed at how good it sounds but as we all know not all records are pressed and mixed perfectly I have considered upgrading to the blue stylus but it’s so expensive not sure if it’s worth it Cheers!

Hi, I've finally had a chance to test the Ortofon 2M red cartridge and I was disappointed with it. I then for a comparison switched it out for a Goldring G850 cartridge which is nearly 50 years old and fitted with a new stylus. I found that it walked all over the Ortofon 2M red in terms of bass, treble and vocals. I was using a Technics SL D202 turntable and a ifi Zen phono stage.

Thank you for this review. Now I know I definitely know I won't be buying this one, was not impressed by the sound at all. Edit: I did end up buying it. They had it on display at Adorama in NYC, I tested it, and I ended up liking it with my own records (I had records with me already.) Thanks again!

+cabasse Dear Sir, thank you too for coming by and writing in. Thank you for your time and kindess...really appreciate them! The AT120eB and the 2M Red are the best looking carts in this groupB... Definitely!!! Totally agree!!! Hahhaa....sound is more important... thank you for raising that up!!!!I will get to the 2M Blue in time...to be compared to the AudioTechnica AT440MLa, GoldringGR2100 and the Grado Red as one of my next projects too! AT440MLa is $200, 2M Blue is $195, Goldring GR2100 is $193, and the Grado Red being $170. These 4 cartridges will make up Group C. Yes, we will come to that definitely. Thank you for your support and encouragement and yes, keep spinning and listening to our precious records!!! Best Regards, Ian :-D

+Nubben100 Dear brother!!!! :-D I thought so too!! Back in January when I first received the whole shipment of carts!!! I thought so too! But no! The Nagaoka MP110, Grado Green and Goldring Elektra, the 3 musketeers, have a stupendous performance that rise above the pack They're on a much higher playing field. My wife can easily tell them apart too. My stepsons also getting into the act and able to distinguish great sound from average sound performance too. :-D again.. my reply to fellow friends yesterday on this page, below, to *Shareef K.*: "the 2M Red is a pretty good cart, it is far from being bad at all. They have been very happy with it." And to friend *Acidhouse*: "......Also, for those who have been listening to the 2M Blue, 2M Bronze and 2M Black, they will find the 2M Red deficient in areas and the observations made are in relativity. Same goes with the experience of listening and being pampered so much by the Green, Elektra and MP110... that one just has to be aware that better sound are indeed present and can come at the same price bracket too! :-D......" Dear friend Nubben, :-D let's keep our energy alive!! Best Regards, Ian!

I have both the 2M Red and the new AT VM530EN (a newer version of the 120 series). I like the bass response of the 2M Red more so than the AT but one I really dislike about the 2M Red is the inner groove distortion. I have been over the alignment of the cart many of time and it rear its ugly head. Sound stage wise, the AT cart is much more open sounding. While the AT cart is bright, I find it less harsh overall vs the 2M Red. I have also come to the same conclusion as you have when it comes to sound staging regarding the 2M Red: it sounds like a cloth cover was draped over it. I will also say that the 120e(b) / 530EN competes more with the 2M Blue since both carts feature a nude elliptical stylus. AT's 100e(b) 520eb competes directly with the 2M Red since both feature bonded elliptical styli. When it comes to the last cut on a side, the AT 530EN / 120 blows the 2M red right out of the water. I definitely love your reviews since you tell it like it is and not afraid to point out flaws.

Thank you so much for all this information. It's been very useful since I didn't know very much about these cartidges. I think 2M may be discarded for now (which was the one I first heard it had a lot of praise). But still I wanted to ask which cartridge(s) would you recommend as good choice(s) for someone who listens a lot of synth, vocal groups and some metal :] , Goldring Elektra and Nagaoka MP110 look good, but I'm not sure. If I may be so bold.. I'd like to ask you about a Cantilever on a SUMIKO BLUE POINT SPECIAL NUDE. Can I send you a photo of it? All the cartridges you have tested shows your dedication to the matter. I'm still using a Rega Elys I got yrs ago directly from London on an old Rega Plannar 3. I'd like to try either the Ortofon 2M Red, the Shure 97E or a Sumiko Blue Point or Pearl. One can read all the reviews one can, but will never know how it's going to blend with the associated equipment until it's set-up, burned in and tried. Do you have any plans to ebay them? Imagine if you were using a Rega Tone Arm. You'd have so much more work to do in order to change out cartridges. おつかりさまでした

A kind of rhubarb and custard cartridge then, some sweet ,some sour,..... perhaps some broken-up ginger biscuits would add a bit of pep to the overall flavour. hi friend, thanks for a great review and really appreciate your efforts. is it possible or even sensible to compare mc & mm cart?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, one can do that :-D ... Only issue is that one will be running the MM cart through a different set of circuitry within a phonostage, while the MC cart will channel the output to another set of circuitry within that same phonostage. It would not be totally fair, because most phonostages would be excellent in either MM or MC circuitry. Seldom both. It is difficult to achieve MC beauty, refinement and weight without a highly capable (and very often, costly) MC phonostage. I would thus highly, highly, highly recommend the 99% of us to really stick with MM, it is much more affordable and sensible. You can have a $120 MM cart with a $130 Schiit Mani phonostage and really be living in sonic bliss :-D... Very sensible, affordable and outstanding performacnce achieved. May you be well and happy, Sincerely, Ian.

I also ordered the Schiit Mani. I should be getting it soon. I have a 2M Ortofone Blue that I will be installing on my RP1. Will it help to sound even better than it does now with the Carbon cartridge? I like how it sounds now. I hope it sounds even better. HD Imaging You have more than a modest system my friend!!!!💪😄✌✌✌... Dear Brother, i recommend for you, to leave the upgrading of the cartridge to a later date. I am sorry, but the teac tt js not a good platform to launch an increase in expenditure. Sound quality wise, the improvement will be limited by the tonearm, and "noisy" motor. Technically wise, deeper/taller cartridges will not be able to fit on becausw the teac tonearm is unadjustable for tonearm height. ....apologies brother. I am very sorry to give such a unencouraging answer... but i cannot speak untruths. Brother, do get a high quality turntable to launch an amazing assault on achieving superb vinyl sound. Take a Technics SL1200Mk2/3/3D/5 from hifido website, or a Rega Planar 3. I have just checked💪, there are several units on sale on the hifido website now. Go look at them. Also, go to this fellow KZfaqr's channel: Vinyl Room. Jeff is the guy doing this channel!... he shows how to adjust the tonearm height on a Rega. HD Imaging Brother, thank you. I am very touched by your kindness and time writing to me. I hope you enjoy your vinyl journey for a very long time too, helping and bringing others into our vinyl community too🤗!! At $1000, i will pick between a good condition Mk5 or a new P3. I have realized during actual handling of the DebutCarbonDC during the recent turntable shoot-out i was doing, that the ProJect tonearm is really much less than optimal. We can definitely do much better with our money. Really. Rega's tonearms are going from strength to strength, and it is proving so good that i even bought a P3 (without the Exact cart) just a month ago. The P1 with a cheap Carbon cart(an AT91/3600) can beat the DebutCarbonDC with a 2Mred, as i witnessed during the recent turntable shoot-out. Both the Mk5 and P3 are fantastic tables. Either one is going to be fun, and provides quality vinyl playback💪😄✌!! Warmest Regards my friend.

Hello, you look like clever guy, not as usual obsessed audiophile, could you please tell me is there any difference in sound between direct drive and belt turntable with the same cartridge?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 7 жыл бұрын
Dear Brother, :-D i feel the most important factor is in the execution part... the design structure may not be the same, but they can arrive at the same desired outcomes: low rumble and noise, high and consistent speed stability, excellent free-ness and smoothness of tonearm bearings, the key main points. :-D this is how i feel about things... and as such i didn't subject myself to pidgeon-holing their sonic parameters.... a direct drive can even beat the belt drive in the area where a few hard core belt-drive supporters claim to be belt-drive's trump card: low rumble. Well the SL1200G has the lowest rumble, beating even the GBP100,000 ClearAudio Master Statement turntable that is so heavy, gigantuan and loaded with features to isolate vibration and rumble from reaching the most critical point of a running record being in contact with the stylus tracking it. The G's rumble is even lower than the latter. Certain belt-drive can also beat direct-drives in terms of speed stability, wow and flutter too. So :-D i don't pidgeon hole them, "direct drive vs belt-drive", coz the pudding is in how the designers and engineers manage to execute their designs and machines, the pudding is in the listening. Hope you are doing well and having lots of fun in your vinyl'ing journey!!! :-D Warmest Regards!!!

Hi, i have a Project Carbon turntable which has an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. I`ve only had it a couple of weeks but i`m not happy with the sound. Could you please advise me which cartridge i should upgrade too. I have a budget of about £150. Thanks.

+Acidhouse house Dear friend, first of all, thank you for your past help and kindness before. As I have said in my video, the 2M Red "is not a bad cartridge", and after listening and living with the Grado Green, Goldring Elektra and Nagaoka MP110 that have been giving stupendously satisfying balanced and great sound, I only have to grade the 2M Red below them... everything is in relativity, and I am happy that you are aware. Also, for those who have been listening to the 2M Blue, 2M Bronze and 2M Black, they will find the 2M Red deficient in areas and the observations made are in relativity. Same goes with the experience of listening and being pampered so much by the Green, Elektra and MP110... that one just has to be aware that better sound are indeed present and can come at the same price bracket too! :-D Don't worry, brother. You will be able to find your way. Currently, I can confirm that Grado Black is the best cartridge between USD70-80, and the Nagaoka MP110, Goldring Elektra and Grado Green are the top3 within the price range of USD90-120. You will be doing even better with the £150 outlay! :-D £150 would be about US$218. I am actually planning to do the cartridge review for the 4 cartridges at that price range of US$170-200 : 1. AudioTechnica AT440MLa ($200), 2. Ortofon 2M Blue ($195), 3. Goldring GR2100 ($193) and 4. Grado Red ($170). Of course the Goldring GR2200 is at US$220 which will be the most expensive cartridge £150 can buy at the market now :-D !!! I have not done the detailed auditioning and comparison with these 5 cartridges as yet, and thus I would not be able of help as yet. Best Regards, Ian.

I love your passion for vinyl. Thank you for doing these reviews. My turntable came with the Ortofon 2M Red. Are you saying I have a bad cartridge? I upgraded from an Audio Technica LP-60 to a Pro-Ject Debut Espirit SB Beatles Edition.

Dear Derek :-D you do not have a bad cartridge, it is just that the competition is much better. Much better is the Grado Green, and much, much, much better is the Nagaoka MP-110. Have fun brother!!! Hope you get better more involving analogue sound asap! Warmest Regards my friend, ~ ian.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I'm just frustrated that I spent all of this money on a new table and expected more from it. I don't want to have to upgrade it to a new cartridge right off of the bat. I don't have a lot of money to spend on things like this. I have not given it a chance to break in yet so maybe it will sound better or maybe I'll just return the table.

Dear Derek... My deepest apologies. I recommend that you return the table and cart. You can have something sounding at least 10 times better with the same money. Warmest Regards, ~ ian.
