People have already suggested that Hoggvandil becomes a recurring threat but here are my two cents: Hoggvandil and his raiders find the corpse of Thorbjorn and the husk uses its profane mystical powers to learn about Arn's existence. A hunt begins, culminating in a first - and final - face-to-face confrontation.

I think the "Challenge Dream" would have been a perfect opportunity for Arn's actions to start endearing Ormr to him, and challenge the hostility he had. He had already commented on how Arn's vow to rescue the people of Highmark was a noble endeavor.
@balrogthane
@balrogthane 4 ай бұрын
Exactly my thought! It's Ormr's dream (i.e., his conception of Arne) that's being challenged. Ormr set out to wreak vengeance on this man he's been imagining for years, this man who betrayed his whole community; he's layered all his frustrations on his conception of Arne, and now the real Arne has just thrown himself into harm's way to protect him.

God I love this series. Story, background music, sounds, video effects and the whole video editing are sensational! Wonderful work. Don't know why but I thought that Arn will try to bond with Ormr as they were both in hostile situations, helping each other. That might be beginning of a great friendship (even though it started dramaticaly).

I expected it to happen on the matched dice OPPORTUNITY during the heal. But it's easy to armchair quarterback something like that when you're just watching and not playing yourself, trying to keep everything (like what weapon your NPC ally is wielding) straight in your head.

You made me start Solo RPing! Me and my RP-group have been struggling in this Covid cursed time. Our group contains a lot of theatre and LARP people, so they are pretty expressive folks even around the gaming table. We've found this doesn't really translate well through online media. So, now 3 of us are picking up a game each we've never played before to Solo RP. We're using the mythic system. Hopefully, when this Covid nonsense is over we'll be able to get together and choose one of them. The GM will be the person who Solo RPed it and learned the rules that way.

Another great episode. Trevor Devall does great storytelling and Arn Kalapunki's story gets better in each episode. For sure will be waiting for the next episode. Although I see a big change from the previous season, and that is the combat system. Something I loved from the season was how action-packed and full of surprises each combat was. Since the first fight of Simon, which ended in retreat and losing his best friend, to many other fights that ended in retreat and unexpected turns that made season 1 arc so good. Each character, be a wildcard or extra did meaningful action or have a role in each combat. There were so many memorable fights in which a lot of actors were involved, like during the temple fight while avoiding the tsunami. Meanwhile, with Ironsworm the combat is too abstract and hard to follow sometimes. Even in this episode, a full combat with four actors was resolved with just one battle roll, which was, to be honest, quite anticlimactic. I really don't know, maybe it's just the way the rules are but it seems to me that it doesn't matter (mechanically) if Arn is alone or with some companions as the rolls don't account for that. It will make any difference (rules-wise) if you did a battle roll with Arn against 3 or 4 guards? or Arn with 3-4 companions against 3-4 guards? Any comment or clarification on this is appreciated, and again, thank you a lot for your hard work on this amazing show.
@MeMyselfandDieRPG
@MeMyselfandDieRPG 3 жыл бұрын
It takes some getting used to, for sure. The difficulty of a battle roll (or any combat roll) is largely represented by the enemy’s Progress Bar. The tougher the enemy, the more difficult the rating, which means each Harm I inflict counts for fewer ticks on the bar, and each Harm they inflict counts for more Health damage to me. For example, if there are a group of raiders (normally, say, Troublesome foes individually), the bar becomes one or two steps more difficult (so it becomes Formidable); but if I have a group of my own allies, the bar might also be reduced down to, say, Dangerous. The outcomes of rolls all take into consideration those factors - so a negative outcome of my roll might mean a meaningful NPC ally gets injured or killed. It’s not at all a simulationist system, but a narrative one. It’s not everyone’s bag, and I myself was unsure if I would like it (as it turns out, I do, but I also sometimes miss the old school simulation approach). What I like about it is the speed of resolution. Simulationist games can get tedious when combat breaks out - this is a failing of games like bog-standard D&D, in my opinion.

@@MeMyselfandDieRPG I agree with your comment about combat in D&D, and this is especially the case for Solo RPG. It is too easy playing solo to get bogged down in complicated battles, especially if you have several NPCs and complex enemies to deal with. If you need to roll hits and damage for every character, not to mention bonus actions and trying to keep track of character interactions, a single battle can take a whole session. While I have never played Ironsworn (and perhaps I never will, as it seems like a pretty steep learning curve), it has definitely opened my eyes to possibilities when it comes to how to run solo adventures. I may think about whether a homebrew system for dealing with bigger battles in a D&D-like setting may be better in terms of game dynamics for solo-play.
@micryt.
@micryt. 6 ай бұрын
@@garthajones > While I have never played Ironsworn (and perhaps I never will, as it seems like a pretty steep learning curve It's been a long time so I'm not sure if you ended up playing already or not, but if not, Ironsworn rules are very simple. One of the simpler ones I know. You choose an action you want to take from a list, roll only a few dice, the result of the action is written in it's description. For example, You have Gather Information on a weak hit, the describing tells you "On a weak hit, the information complicates your quest or introduces a new danger. Envision what you discover (Ask the Oracle if unsure), and take +1 momentum." So the actual rules are very easy. There's not much more to it. The difficult part can be imagining for yourself the outcome.

Binged season 1. Loved it. Watched the supplemental episodes, loved them as well. Binging season 2 now and I am loving it too of course! How could I not when you do such an amazing job, Trevor? When I compare your use of SWDE with Mythic GME, and the various supplements (UNE & Co., etc.), it seems to me like Ironsworn produces a more abstract narrative and is a bit too technical at times (as encapsulated perfectly in 17:05, I think). I would love to get your take on it after running both systems so well. Wish you all the best and looking forward to (and dreading) catching up with the live episodes! P.s. Another great episode! Pwogwess! 🤣 Six episodes in and it feels like this season can end quickly or go on for a while. Spoiler: Ultimately, Arn still needs to reforge the weapon, find Thaugolos and defeat it. I envision that can be like 3 sessions or 30 depending on the dice and interpretation. I'm hoping this leans towards the latter; more story is out there to be told. Thank you for such a wonderful series.

Amazing. All the time I was expecting a sort of "boss battle" before Arn could finally save the people of Hjallmark? (Don't remember the name of the settlement), but the escape was surprisingly quick and succesful, while leaving the menace of Hjogvandill still open to future stories. This is where the game system really shines. In fact, I cannot stop thinking where the journey of Arn would have led him, if he hadn't chose to go to the island of the Husk to save the villagers, the very place where Ulvetann was waiting for him 🙂 EDIT: I just saw the intro of the next episode 🤩

This game is so action-packed, Trevor. Well met with the MANY opportunities for failure and natural flow from scene to scene! Arn Kalapunki should quit being an adventurer and become a prospector. The man has some of the most intense plot armor I've ever seen. The Gods of Fate love to worship him and grace him with opportunity to do the RIGHT thing, despite adversity. I especially liked how the accepted him sacrifice of an old man to save thirty other non-warriors.

Nice move making a quick battle instead of the regular thing. We already see a battle 2vs2 at the begining, and the early 2 were more dangerous than the normal drunk guards. And that choice saved time to the epic final of the episode. Now I must say, even loving what you have done, not meeting the Husk seemed a little anticlimatic. What you think about one of the regular guards not really died, he just lost consciousness and when the he wakes up he tells what happened and now, the Husk hunts Arn with one of the 2 small boats Arn and Omir used to get there.

I think the roll you ignored, could be interpreted as the NPC starting to question the legitimacy of one of your vows... Since "dream" can mean "goal" that would make sense... @DanLangford
@DanLangford 3 жыл бұрын
It may be worth noting that in Ironsworn there are not Hit Points that when reduced results in death/defeat. The entire Ironsworn system is based on building up a collection of successes and then testing those with a roll. To test you roll like normal except in place of the d6 you use the number of cumulated successes. So for combat when he deals harm that translates into a number of successes. Any time he gets a strong hit he can attempt to test those successes against the 2d10 dice with a move called “end the fight”. So if he only dealt 3 harm and got a strong hit he could try to end the fight but the odds of rolling 2d10 each under 3 is very low so he would be wise to deal more harm before attempting to end the fight. It could be 5, 7, 9 harm. It all depends on how risky he wants to be and when he gets those Strong Hits. All that being said, he can narrate the harm and the strong and weak hits however he likes. Be can narrate that it kills some people or wounds or disabled them. The system doesn’t care so long as he keeps dealing harm, finding a strong hit, and rolling low enough on his End the Fight move. He could narrate that End the Fight is not death but submission, or restraining, or another means of ending it. Doesn’t have to be death.

What was the “cost” of the Face Danger w/Heart weak hit at 15:00-16:00? Husk chambers. Should there have been a Stress or lost Momentum? Not to be a nag just wondering if there was a mistake or if I just missed it. Edit: never mind it was 1 harm

Hi Men. I see all your vids and a love the content of your channel. But after comparing systems, I have one cuestión to ask you: Whats tipe of Rpg system you consider better for use in solo gaming? Whats give you better feeling?. I ask this for is more diferent using Ironsworn or Savage, than a Gurps, Basic Fantasy or Becmi systems for example. I like the simplicity to Ironsworn, but is more automatic in another things than other systems on the same level of simplicity. You find some remarcable cont using Ironsworn for solo gaming?. I ask this for I like the game and have more gods Pros for solo gaming, but for othe side I feel is some more automatic o caotic than other old systems. Whats is your opinion? One good grate.

Any system can work for solo gaming, but the simpler systems tend to go faster. I would avoid a high “crunch” game (like, say, Gurps with all of the options turned on) unless you’re very familiar with it.

I have not actually played yet and am still reading the books (currently on Delve), so I have a question regarding rules. At 5:00 Arn (or is it Arne? And how do you spell his family name? Captions give me different results every time you say his name) has lost the initiative and the raider is attacking Ormeer (spelling?). Arn decides to jump in, trying to get between them. This seems like a proactive move, but having lost initiative, should he not be more reactive? or is the Face Danger roll considered a reaction to the raider's attack? Ultimately, I know we can play how we want and it won't really break anything, but I do like to have a good grasp of what the rules intend.

Face Danger was a reaction to the raider about to attack (and very likely injure) Ormyr. Very roughly speaking, Face Danger is reactive, while Secure an Advantage is proactive.

Watching S2 for the first time - I like the story but the combat makes no sense to me. Hard to tell what having or losing initiative actually does. And it seems like Arne is the only one with any stats? The soldier guy doesn't seem to get a chance to actually do anything himself - and the enemies don't seem to have any specific combat skills or any ability to dodge. Bit too unstructured for my liking

It’s not a “traditional” game system. It requires a shift of perspective (that took me a while to grok myself). Link to free rules, so you can read for yourself! www.drivethrurpg.com/product/238369/Ironsworn?affiliate_id=538789&term=ironsw

@@MeMyselfandDieRPG Very true - and I can definitely see the appeal for a solo playthrough, so that you're not getting bogged down in the minutia. Looking forward to finishing the rest of this season and then moving right into S3 - keep these epic sagas coming!

Momentum again, huh? Right, it's at 2 now, it can't be used again now, correct? Oh wait now it's suddenly at 3 and you exchange a momentum point for a health point. You what??!? OK, enough, just replace the word "momentum" with "cheating".

Or, conversely, you could, you know, read the rules. They’re even free.
