Hajime no Ippo seems to be one of the most realistic sports and boxing anime out there, yet how realistic is it really? I am joined by two MMA experts to breakdown an episode of Hajime no Ippo where he fights Mashiba Ryo and also to check how realistic is Ippo's training before the boxing fight.
I am joined by Ricky Davison, head MMA coach of SBG Portland and also Vanessa Mariscal a former professional MMA fighter, now MMA and fitness coach.
To learn more about Vanessa check her Instagram here: / vmxfitness
To learn more about where Ricky Davison is coaching:

Hajime no Ippo has been my personal inspiration for years. It inspired me to become involved into competitive sports and was a great introduction and inspiration for me to learn about boxing. It's also such a great tool of inspiration for learning about the importance of hard training and the mental aspect of boxing and fighting. Yet watching the anime I was always wondering - so how realistic is Hajime no Ippo? Where is the line drawn where the realistic side of it ends? Yet I knew I would not be able to answer this question without professional boxers or fighters together with me. Finally I've got my chance.
Also note, that this fight of Ippo vs Mashiba is one of the more realistic ones. Such fights as Tamura vs Hawk are probably pushing the barriers of realism quite a bit more. But how much? I think we will just have to make another Hajime no Ippo breakdown video ;)
What do you think about Hajime no Ippo? How realistic do you think Hajime no Ippo is? Let me know in the comments.
Also, this video made took a lot of work to make. If you want more videos like this one, make sure to share it with your friends and click the like button.

@@MartialArtsJourney Next time please have Real Boxer/ Coaches not MMA Fighters or Coaches. They suck in Boxing setting of sparring they cant see the punches from the angles. You have to run in order for the legs to be Conditioned then what follows is the jump rope for Coordination, Balance and Timing. Then ShadowBoxing with darth in and out, lateral side to side, and the triangle footwork Simultainiously from the Stance. Most MMA fighters doesnt know the Fundamentals of Boxing, they think that they could just jump in like with their Flatfooted stance with their feet. When you ask them to wear a pair of shoes, the mannerism and their habits is still there. Boxing coaches will be Brutally honest and will instill fear if you cant adapt and adjust. Well said Vegito. Finally somebody that knows his shit. To break down this anime like this sucks the life out of a good anime series. It has a good story with good action and I think it addresses alot of psychological parts from each character. You got ppl from all walks of life that are real and up front and you've got ppl who is going to pump you up so it's an excellent blend. Excellent anime all the way through.

Ippo is more like Joe's depressed side and more calm side of Joe. The author of Hajime is a fan of Ashita and Chiba Tetsuya. One thing both Sendo and Ippo have in common with Joe is extremely good punching power besides them being Japanese with similar looks.

Not really, this MMA experts keep bringing up constantly how things would work in MMA training and fighting, they outright ignore that they're watching a boxing anime, this is basically saying "both sports are about fighting so they're the same" so saying "soccer and basketball are both about balls so they're the same" isn't that different as an example.

@@Critical_0 I know that there are cultural differences in coaching methods. Takamura's case is kind of lopsided. His role in the story isn't as a mentor but a senior to ippo. He only imparts little nuggets of wisdom onto Ippo because he feels he has a duty to help him improve on his shortcomings. He also isn't really helpful at times. In the more recent chapters, he flat out discourages Ippo from returning to boxing and there's an obvious level of detachment you can see in him. Overall, I'd say it was unfair to judge the show based on a single scene with no context like the video did and not into account other perspectives.

Ippo is one of the best, realistic martial arts anime. Kenichi is fun but the power level is all over the place and it's really about showcasing the values, theories and ideals of traditional martial arts in an exaggerated fashion, which is good fun. Baki is about over the top violence and manliness and often about the contrast between real fighting and martial arts. A surprisingly good one that's running right now is Hinomaru Sumo/Hinomaru Zumou. It's a typical shonen martial arts sports anime about Sumo, and it's really quite realistic as well. They also have an MMA guy and Karate guy that adapts their skills to their Sumo game in the main team, in a way that I think is fairly realistic. I started it because I am a martial arts nerd but I really did not expect that out of a Sumo anime.

You didnt provide much context at all either, In that fight Ipoo is a beginner fighting in the rookie tournament, and he doesn’t quite understand how boxing works yet, so they’re not as much trying to scare him as much as filling him in on fundamentals. Also the styles of most fighters in the show are exaggerated versions of real life fighters, that particular opponent is based on Thomas “the hitman” Hearns

As someone who has read the entire thing up to the current chapter (1245ish, updates are strange) as well as watched the anime, I can assure you there are more than several instances where this series breaks through the realm of what is possible lol. That being said it's still extremely feasible to enjoy the series and I greatly encourage anyone who is interested in it to go ahead and start. It's one of the best comedy series ever made as well as one of the best action series.

The flicker is done by building up momentum (by moving your arm back and fourth) and then 'flicking' out a jab. Or something along those lines.

It's also worth mentioning that the story originally is a Manga. It can be hard to translate that to animation, especially when fine details are concerned. The creator of the Manga, being a boxing coach himself, probably imagined more realistic movement in his head more than the animation studio was able to show in the animated series, though I imagine they would've consulted the creator and/or experts to get it mostly right.

Mashiba's style is supposed to be based off of Thomas Hearns. Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns often would drop his left hand to deliver his flicking jabs; watch Hager vs. Hearns and you'll see that Hearns drops his left constantly.

Very good video. First time I watch this channel anyway. If you're comparing this serie with reality, would you be so kind to ask about two techniques that appears later in this anime? I mean, if those techniques exist or they are "reliable to do". Those techniques should be: Ippo's Dempsey Roll, and Volg's White Fang. Also, you should talk about Takamura's diet before a fight. That's a really hard point of describe it. Regards from Chile!

1 Dubbed is for accessibility. If you are trying to get someone to watch anime for the first time, you don't make then watch subbed shows. 2: Anime is just Japanese Animation Aka Japanese Cartoons. They don't need to know the term Anime, it's enough to know it's from Japan. 3: The lady is there to talk... 4: Yeah this is a common complaint but he is using what he has. If he had boxing experts then I'm sure he'd use then instead. It's in the title so it's not like he's lying about the content. 5: Context was provided enough. They aren't reviewing the damn thing, they are only talking about the aspects of the martial art. Training, coaching and of course, the actual combat. I mean the title says what the video is, and the video is what the title says. If you want to make your own then do so. But bitching about someone not calling it an anime or showing them the dub is just silly to me.

I know I'm like four years late to this, but Mashiba is, like others have said, based on Tommy Hearns, and the back-and-forth swinging of his hand in preparation for his flicker seems to be based specifically on the second fight between Hearns and Leonard. Of course, Hearns's motions are less rhythmic and much faster; they're feints more than anything, but at times he does swing his hand back and forth a few times before throwing out the jab from below.

It was really interesting seeing some experienced coaches review the show, but with all due respect, all the laughing about "negative comments" of the main protagonist coach and friends is just silly. There are more than one way of doing things. If your style as mma coaches is to be uplifting and positive all day, that's just great. Whatever works for you and it sure incourages larger numbers of athletes, fighters to sticm around in the gym since their fears and feelings are being babysit in such detail. There are different schools pf coaching and what you call "negative energy" works just fine and has worked for millions of fighters along the centuries, from Japanese fighters in karate to Muay Thai fighters, Russian boxers etc. Do you think Buakaw Por Pramuk's coach didn't use "negative energy and comments"? Do you think Saenchai's coach had nothing but "positive energy"? Heck, Muay Thai fighters, nationals or foreign are down right abused and bullied in some Thai gyms and for quite a few it gets the results. It's not an approach for anyone. It's an approach that makes you aware of your shortcomings while giving you a solution to them and forging your character and fears along the way. You get warned, you might get scared and if you do, the solution you work on is going to make that fear useful. Cus D'Amato by the way employed the same type of "negative energy" tactics you all laugh about and hey, he only produced numerous champions and one of the most if not the most iconic boxers of all time, Mike Tyson who is actually the boxer who inspired the creator of this cartoon/anime to base the main character on. So, in short: just because your personal coaching style is comfortable to you and your students and it is uplifting all the time and filled with "positive energy", doesn't mean other styles of coaching are to be laughed at and don't work. Just my 2 cents.

Two mma coaches tell you how little they know about boxing. Rally weird to see two mma coaches who don't know what a Philly shell and flicker jab are. They're only two of the most iconic staples of some of the greatest fighters of all time. This is why I get worried when I see a mma guy go into boxing. Their knowledge of the sweet science is so limited most of the times it's sending a lamb to the slaughter. And vice versa for the boxer going to mma.

Yeah, something I love about Hajime no Ippo is that it's mostly realistic, while the unrealistic parts have tangible reasons: they're all there to improve the viewing experience. The visual flair, the internal monologue, even people hyping up Mashiba and psyching Ippo out are there for dramatic tension.

One that's really interesting, and I'd like to hear the input of real fighters/trainers is the Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru (Minoru Kohinata, The Little Prince of Karate)... It only exists as a manga (no anime), but it's one that was completed a long time ago, though English translations are only now nearing the end of the series (total 500 chapters). The sequel manga, which is just called "Karate Shoukoushi Monogatari" (The Tale of the Little Prince of Karate), hasn't been translated yet, AFAIK. The reason I ask is because that one's very much specifically about MMA, and portrays itself as pretty realistic. A number of the characters are based on real fighters as well (e.g. Samart Payakaroon, Saenchai Sor. Kingstar, Jean-Charles Skarbowsky)... There are some things that, like any manga/anime are a little unrealistic -- for instance, the main character, because he was originally a gymnast, uses a lot of high-flying kicks and doumawashi and so on -- but even as the series goes on, he grows out of it and starts using normal punches and kicks and shows a tiny bit of development on grappling. Even when it gets unrealistic, it's not unrealistic in the sense of "that's defying the laws of physics"; it's unrealistic in the sense that "that would practically never work in real life." The series also has its fun little easter eggs. Every now and then you'll see another anime character make an appearance... Sailor Venus in a crowd, Vegeta in the gym, Jet Black in an audience, one fighter who apparently looked like Kazuma Kuwabara in his youth... also terminology from Ken'ichi and Naruto will make its way into the story, but they try to apply it to something real.
