Islam Makhachev eyes ‘legend’ Dustin Poirier for June, even if ‘Dustin doesn’t deserve the title fight’.
Islam Makhachev wants to fight in June, and if recent winner Dustin Poirier is the only option, that’s just fine with him.
The UFC lightweight champion is hoping to defend his title this summer, but with the other top contenders currently booked at UFC 300, Poirier has timing on his side following his second-round knockout win over Benoit Saint Denis this past Saturday at UFC 299. Speaking with MMA Junkie, Makhachev agreed that while Poirier may not be the meritocratic choice to fight for the title, availability might just be Poirier’s best friend.

I have to disagree. Islam striking is much better than khabib but khabib mma wrestling and durability are much better than Islam. They are really different fighters. Khabib has insane pressure. Islam is more calm and great counter striker. They can’t really compare apple to an orange 🍊.

Not necessarily. I am a fan of Islam but lets be honest Arman was worried about Charles elite submission skills. Islam doesn't pose the same threats. Islam and Arman are both elite wrestlers and the fight would be much closer than people anticipate. But Islam has to go through Dustin first and Dustin is no joke.

I followed them both since years. Let’s say if someone is going to beat Islam, Arman is the one. But Arman always make stupid mistakes out of confidence. Here a wheel kick, there an axe kick, losing top positions and giving the neck for a submission on the ground. That’s why he lost to Gamrot and looked part bad against Charles. Same mistakes against Islam and he is going to lose deadly. He needs to get his shit together.

I think you don’t understand that Arman is much more dangerous for Islam than Oliviera was. Arman and Islam both are from southern Russia, where the one of the best wrestler come from, they both practicing sambo and wrestling from their childhood. Arman really made it difficult for Islam during their first fight, and it was on short notice

Usman, Leon, Khamzat, Shavkat, Garry.... those are big Welterweights. If Colby had gone to 155, I think he likely would have become champ, either right before or right after Khabib. At 170, he's a bit undersized for the bigger elites like Usman, Leon, Shavkat et al., so at 170, even with an actual elite D1 wrestling skill, he's never going to become champ, not in Usman's time, not in Leon's time, and not in the upcoming Shavkat's time...

I want Makha to win but dustin could be trouble. The thing that kept Khabib safe against knockout artists was his unorthodox head movement, and the risk of takedowns. They just couldn't time their combos against him. One clip and the rest of the flurries would all miss . But, Makhachev's striking and head movement is text book ..he could get timed by dustin. I hope that isn't the case. But, Makhachev should take this one seeiously!😮

What I would Love to see the Ufc (and I understand not everyone feels the same) do: Skip weightclasses. You weigh in the day before the fight and you get assigned opponents based on weight. You get points for wins in different leagues. So the guy who wins the most and can hold the same weight goes up and up in his division if he wins. He misses weight? Gets a bigger opponent more suitable according to size. Then you get scored in that division. That way we dont see dangerous weightcutting, we dont see champs just jumping over a whole division just because "its a cool fight" so they get doubble belts etc. Id think that was cooler, safer and just more interesting. Loads of issues with that way too, for sure, but thats just me :)

Ben Askrin was saying Dustin would work on sprawling, aka prevent getting taken down, and work on getting off the ground. He's saying Dustin likely has very little to improve on striking in such a short amount of time and that working on defending the takedown so he DOES NOT go to the ground. Dustin working on grappling, would be more beneficial for his striking than him working on striking lol.

I just don't see Islam engaging long enough on any type of dirty boxing or fire fights and striking long enough for DP to best him. Anthony Smith said that well, i couldnt agree more. Thats awesome Islam said forget playing the waiting around game. After dismantling the division. Its such a perfect fight to see two legends go at it. Dustin may be the underdog, but we all seen moments in this sport we never thought imaginable., Thats coming from someone that thinks Islam is unbeatable lol. Dustin is a bad mfer, and can scrap with the very best of them, and win. Dustin's heart, and elite skills he has honed over these years fighting the best of the best. Every time we see a fighter enter the cage imo that is a completely different fighter than we have ever seen before. So yea who knows i literally just came from watching Izzy vs Sean, and thats a great example of just not knowing. Its always going to be who is the best man that night. Just so happens Islam is a monster with elite elite work ethic. Training with the very best. I just dont see him losing to anyone that i see at this point anyway. Still like i said not counting Dustin out. Can never count a man like Dustin out. Especially when that gold is on the line. Then things get a million times more unpredictable lol. Love this sport.

Exactly, Dustin has very good grappling we saw that in his fight against Chandler when he escaped Chandler's submission attempts and choked Chandler out. Again we saw how Dustin escaped Benoit Saint Denis' submission attempts and forced him to fight on the feet and ultimately knocking him out. Justin has no ground game, once a grappler takes him down it is over for Justin. So i agree, Dustin is a much harder match up for Islam than Justin.

Then only reason people think Arman poses greater threat to Islam is because Arman defended a lot of take down attempts by Islam. For everyone winning is winning, but for Khabib and Islam if the winning is not by complete domination peopel go gotcha! Islam attempted 9 TD against Arman and scored 4. Arman attempted 12 against him and got 1. Just the fact that he was able to take him down once is a big deal for people. Do you realize if you forget about the expectations that Islam (or Khabib) should dominate, the stats actually look ridiculously dominating?
