I'm an American. Former Army infantry and avid camper. I own a British bivy bag (In DPM pattern) and I prefer it over the American Bivy bag. It's roomier and has no zippers to fail. It's absolutely bomb proof and has never let me down. Well done, Brits!

Canadian Army bivy is similarly designed to the Brit bivy and is great. That said, US Marine Corps Improved Bivy looks outstanding.

I’m a retired American combat engineer and I prefer the British bivy simply because it’s zipper less. I like to keep my sleeping bag inside as one piece and roll them together as well.

Ho Wooly. Nice review. In my British bivvy bag,I changed the flat lace draw cord for 3mm Para cord. It closes easier. All the best.

If a zip can go wrong it will at the worst time. Don't ask me how I know. If raining that bad on British one just turn it over ,so hooded bit goes over your head. Rain just runs off.

I have always just left my sleeping bag inside my bivy bag so that it is protected against any spills or wet weather and my sleep system is ready to go at moments notice. Only thing you have to do is ensure you air you sleeping bag once in a while. Also not convinced with compression bags as if your sleeping bag is in your bivy you can just pack it straight into you pack and then pack around it. Great comparison

There are multiple versions of the US bivvy. Both of mine were the same though. I need to dig my other one out and see if it needs repairs or not. I hope all is getting back to normal. Stay frosty.

I modded one of my british army bags, cut the hood off, (I like my head out the bag) and also had a center zip put on to ease getting in and out. I use that one if I want a tarp cover as well.

I have the British one. It is a faff getting into it but once you know what you're doing it becomes easier I.E sleeping bag in the bivvy and then step into both and pull them up around you before lying on your pad/mat. Obviously, if you put your sleeping pad/mat in it then it's back to slightly faffing around. However, there is loooooaaadddssssss of room and it's completely waterproof. I really love my bivvy and it goes everywhere with me on my little adventures.

I still have one of the original geen ones. I traded for it when I spent a month in England in 89. It is superior to the current American army issue bivvy bag. There is no zipper to fail or leak, and it is quite a bit lighter in weight. It was an absolute game changer for me. I never got wet in it. Didn't even get condensation in it. It is absolutely bomb proof. Put a poncho liner or two in it depending on temperature. I have several of american ones. If I'm tent camping I prefer the American one because it's easier to get in, and out of. But if I'm just surviving in a bivvy bag with a poncho liner. The British version is better. It has never failed me.

British army bags are a modular sleep system and is part of 3 bags. 1 is the outer cover, 2 is the intermediate, and 3 is the full system used in extream cold conditions. One goes inside the other, you use what you need at any give time. I was not british army but Navy we used something simular, it being mostly blue, and kept us warm this would be level 2. You would not need much else most of the time it worked fine.

I have got both and like them both. UK one is simple (nothing that can fail) The US one is more user friendly for access with the zip.

Yup 👍 I use both too. I like the US bivy when using the patrol bag inside. Never let me down. The British bag is fool proof. No zips just crawl in. If injured it’s easy to use. Heavy rain, flip it over and use the bottom flap as a head shelter. No breathing through a snorkel!

Evening Wooly, do you put any type of wax on your bivvy bags for protection? I've got two British army bivvy bags in DPM had them years and don't know whether to treat them or just leave them as is.

I'd clean them in nixwax tec wash the use a nixwax reproofer, it will bring them back to new. All goretex materiel needs to be washed and kept clean for it to work properly

You measured it seam to seam worth wise but not length wise, not that I care. The reason the American one is big is it's to fit those other bags from the modular system. There is also an "improved bivvy" from the American Military Surplus. I think it is officially the USMC 3 season bivvy cover idk the nsn offhand, anyways it is not part of the mss system and it is narrow like the British one. That said the USMC one is way diff than both the British and army mss ones. It has bug mesh and I'snt even gortex. The idea is the mesh provides ventilation I think. You should check it out. These all have their own niche use case but also all would work in a general sense. The USMC one is a unique design, not better per se just interesting and def some advantages and disadvantages

I know you like various army's gear.. I recently picked up a French army bivvy bag on ebay for about 60€.. It has a left hand zip which is why I went for it.. It is made by FECSA, who as you know makes both the Dutch hooped bivvy bag, and the British army sleep system, that I also have... It has a funky hood, stuff bag on it, that I cut off as it's just dead weight and serves no purpose as a hood and I prefer just to stick it in a far lighter dry bag... Over all though it is far easier to get into than the Brit bag, far cheaper than the Carinthia.. and so far has kept me warm dry with zero condensation...

As I said.. I cut off the hood/stuff bag bit, which is also in goretex type material with straps and fastex buckles. Can't see the point in it.. as it's the wrong shape for a hood and far too big and heavy as a stuff bag... takes 300g off the over all weight..

If you could choose only one ? American or british army? I got the older olive british army one and The American bivibag and also the Dutch army hooped bivi and if i choose its the Dutch with mozzy net and hoop and easy access with zipper.

@@RedBranchBushcraft you should try it someday. It has side ziper like us bivi and space to put 50 liter backpack inside plus mesh to prevent bugs. You can full close it during rain and it will not lay on face than. So it is like small tent. Sry for my English. Greatings from Poland..

@@RedBranchBushcraft They are good , the Miltec one crap . Having used the UK one "In anger" . I always refer to them as coffins . They are hard work to get out of quick and if you have a rifle with you a joke ! The US and Dutch M90 is a lot better to be able to "Burst out " quickly .
