Yea it's why I will NEVER be able to actually watch it. Me and my 3 sisters was extremely abused physically, emotionally, spiritually, verbally and mentally. She let her boy toys violate us sexually for money and hits of dope pipes and or bags of dope. We are still recovering. She would always play victim in front of law to make us look bad. But, all the neighbors/me and my siblings friends as well as her friends knew and tried to save us kids to no avail. The ONLY REASON we are still alive today is my beloved granny. May she forever rest in peace. She was truly the only true salvation we had our entire lives

I know this is acting but i hope that precious baby got reassured with great love! This is very realistic trauma and i know it can affect a child. They really played this role because it sent chills from memories. That baby is beautiful!

When I saw that scene, I personally don't think she meant she literally breastfed her boyfriend to like, feed him. In that scene she said she fed her baby via a bottle, but that her breastmilk also just so happened to not dry up because of her boyfriend having sex with her constantly (& the wording in the book makes this more obvious where she says he's "always on her" by having sex with her). This also takes place in the 80s, and there was an era that people had (incorrectly) thought that breastfeeding was unhygienic and that bottle feeding and/or baby formula was better, so THAT'S what she meant by what she was told was "hygenic". I think narratively its also highlighting how she prioritized her boyfriend over her child. But I also agree with the other comment that this was one of Mary's lame excuses for abusing her child, she's kind of implying that her bad parenting is not her own fault, but the influence of her mother. It IS implied by Mary that her own mother abused her, but that the grandmother is seemingly a better parent to Precious's child than she was to Mary, so that's why she bitterly says "you didn't do much better". Mary is angry about her own mother abusing her & blames her for her own bad parenting, but takes mo responsibility about her abuse of Precious, and in turn the grandmorther doesn't do much to stop Mary abusing Precious OR the babies. Precious is the one to break the cycle of abuse by taking her babies away and being a good mother to them despite everything she went through. But that's just my interpretation.
