See this is a real moment. Marge is told the bad advice her mother was told which was psychologically abusive. Then she realizes how bad it was and apologizes to Lisa. It’s one of those classic simpsons moments with heart that has been missing for a long time.

This scene is such a beautiful "breaking the cycle" thing. Marge forces herself to smile because that's what her mother told her to do, but Marge loves Lisa too much to see her going through the same, and how she's just gonna drive backwards and snatch Lisa into the car when she sees people mistreating her! And "Now I feel like smilling" is so fucking sweet I love this.

@@JawncoreIL yeah. The early seasons really had better more heartfelt family moments. One question I've had for a long time about Marge's mother, in Marge's childhood flashbacks, her mother always seemed cheerful and pleasant. But in present time episodes, Jacquine Bouvier is bitter and negative. What happened to change her? It can't just be because she got old because I've known happy elderly folks

That's such a beautiful sentiment to share with someone who could be depressed and not wanna smile. A lot of people instantly say don't frown or don't cry, even though it's coming from a good meaning place that's the first thing we say. Marge is saying it's ok to not feel happy, and that if that's how you truly feel in that moment that's ok. You ride through the storm and those that love and care about you will understand and ride it out alongside you. What a beautiful message to convey.

This might be my personal favorite moment in any Simpsons episode. At least, on an emotional level. I have bipolar disorder and I'm on the autism spectrum. One of the more relatable things in this scene is I, like other people with forms of autism, can have difficulty smiling or feigning happiness. So sometimes I would pretend to, like Lisa does. But I've never really been good at pretending anything and most of the time it's so hard to hide the stuff my conditions and life cause me to deal with. Throughout my life there were people, including myself, that wanted me to not be different or ill and to pretend to smile and to bury all those differences, emotions, frustrations, and suffering. But it was my mom who encouraged me to be who I was and the one who backed me up and supported me through good days and bad. So this scene, especially the end of it, hits pretty hard for me. It makes me cry. But it also makes me...smile.

It's really a strong moment because it's not just Lisa learning, it's Marge too. She gives the advice she knows, and then sees how it works out, and takes it back- admitting she was wrong and changing because she sees her daughter going through the same shit she went through and realises it won't stop until she makes it stop. She's not too old to learn and change, and she can help the next generation do better than hers.

I always find myself returning to this clip. When I was a kid I never really understood this episode, or where any of the conflict stemmed from. Years later, after going through my own battles with depression, this became one of my longtime favourite moments, conveying the method of masking and how unhelpful it is. It's ok not to be ok. Be yourself, never sacrifice who you are to chase the illusion of normalcy

Take all your bad feelings and push them down, all the way down, past your knees until you are almost walking on them. One of my favourite emotional Simpsons moments. To touch on this subject matter, in a cartoon, in its very first season says a lot. Very profound and extremely relatable to many of us who struggle. The entire last 15 years of the Simpsons haven’t come close to moments like this (except maybe ‘Barthood’). With what the show has become now people forget how amazing the 90’s seasons truly were.

This is actually a proven psychological trick, tho. I got therapy through the VA that would’ve cost a me fortune otherwise. Forcing a joker-level smile actually CAN help you improve your mood. Your face communicates to your mind via your muscles. It makes me laugh when I do it because I know I look ridiculous, but it does work when I need to fight off those darkest of thoughts… This scene has a good message, but don’t knock the power that smiling can have as an emotional parachute 😊

Happiness is a natural emotion in humans and animals. But like any other emotion, it varies between hosts. Different people find joy in different things, from massive accomplishments to little things like a Simpsons clip. I don't know what your life is like, but if you're sad, it's okay to feel that way. The world won't hate you for it. People who care about you will help you through it. And even after that, you don't have to suddenly be all smiles and sunshine. I think real happiness comes from being comfortable with who you are.
