Vito Genovese (November 27, 1897 - February 14, 1969) was an Italian-American mobster who rose to power during Prohibition as an enforcer in the American Mafia. A long time associate of Charles Luciano, Genovese took part in the Castellammarese War and helped shape the rise of the Mafia and organized crime in the United States. He would later lead Luciano's crime family, which was renamed the Genovese crime family.

It's kind of a shame the family became known as the Genovese family and not the Luciano family. Genovese was a power hungry dog who wasn't below betraying anyone and everyone to get his way, and he merely took advantage of Luciano's exile to force his way in as boss. The family should've kept Luciano's name considering it was the premier family from the nation's most influential boss.

To bad Luck Luciano had to leave the US. Who knows how would American Mafia end up if he stayed on top. But everybody knew the heyday of American Mafia was over when the made men started to rat out on their bosses because of the big sentences that were given to them for involvement in drugs business. The old guard knew they should never mess with the drugs. In those days omerta worked cause all the guys stayed silent and did their time (5-10 years). But when the Feds give you 2 choices: 1. You spill the beans on your boss or 2. You're getting 30 years for that 10 kg of heroin we caught you with. Many guys buckled and ratted out.. Of course the last nail in the coffin of the American Mafia was the RICO law with which the FBI could go after the big wigs even if they had no specific evidence against them. Is was enough for you to be at the helm of the organisation whose members were involved in serious crime. There was something romantic about the Cosa Nostra, especially when you compare it with the current wild men from Mexican cartels, MS 13 and the likes. Although in Italy today Camorra is what COsa nostra was 50 years ago. Sicilians were overrun by the more ruthless organised crime bosses - Camorristi..

Interesting how Genovese went to Italy to cozy up to Musso's fascists; considering that one of the wider narratives of Luciano's release/exile later was how it was in exchange for his help in smoothing the way for the Allied invasion of Sicily, and later Italy, to depose Mussolini and his Nazi overseers. Genovese seems to have turned his coat back again, too; also allegedly assisting the US Army in liaising with the Sicilian separatist leader and notorious bandit boss Salvatore Giuliano during the invasion. The story of the Mafia's struggle against Mussolini's regime and its unlikely partnership of convenience with the US military during World War II deserves to be more completely told.

@peterh1353
@peterh1353 4 жыл бұрын
I have read about that period and would recommend Alan Whickers autobiography which details his Allied Service in the region and his first hand account of the bizarre and Byzantine Italian nation of the time. Mussolini had the advantage of suppressing organised crime simply by being ruthless and cruel. By being a bigger bully than the other bullies. This pleased the public who were the victim. Gangsterism and blood feuds racked the country and even above this there is a natural animosity between North and the South. Something which persists to this day. The Allied forces were aided by mobsters and criminals, but also by camp followers and those that simply wanted to be part of the winning team. Like Spain and the former Yugoslavia, rather a "forced" nation or a shotgun marriage.

Out of all the other five whose namesakes are given to naming the families Genovese was heads above the rest the most duplicitous, conniving, backstabbing prick of them all. Teaming up with the likes of Benito Mussolini was just beyond fucked up, then even switching sides back to the American Commission after Mussolini's fall. That Vito had some fukin' balls on him. Easily the most detestable crime boss of all time. Second, on my personal list would come John Gotti.

the family would always take the name of the new boss. however since the 1960s it was agreed that the names of the families of the present bosses in the 1960s would stay the same names forever as whenever the names changed the FBI would then know who the new boss was and begin to go after them. so by keeping the old names it wouldnt attract too much heat for whoever was the boss at that time.

hey can you start uploading videos of the canadian italian mafia families?. theres some very powerful families in canada and there very unknown about. for example the montreal quebec families rizzuto and cotroni which use to be part of the bonanos now there supposely just allies now. may be another one or two families in montreal. also in hamilton ontario there 2 or 3 families that i believe are part of allies with buffalo familes. maybe more in hamilton. then theres the toronto city families which i heard was 3. then there were romours of others in vaughn and dont know about the rest of canada. its very hard to find information on this families. even though the fbi is well involved in watching them etc. the way i see it canada families have an easy time prospecting and growing because of the fbi putting the most focus on new york familes compared to other american families and the canadian familes had almost full reign for along time. and they have backing in italy and american families so they got all the benefits to prosper. plus theres been a mafia war the past few years in a few of the canadian mafia families which is not documented very well at all. be nice to be shown new info on the families and the war thats going on between a few factions which still hasnt ended. high ranking members of montrel family rizzuto have been getting rubbed out bosses consigliares acting bosses etc. considering there allgedly the most powerful mafia family in canada its crazy. plus the boss in hamilton was murder or had a attempt on his wife then the underboss or consigliere there had a attampt on his life. then recentley anoter 1 or more high ranking members in a family maybe hamiltons operating in vaughn was rubbed out not long ago also. but the rizzutos got the most members dying the head of the familys and even the sons of them were also killed. son of mafia boss was murder so was his mob boss dad the consigliere and the consiglere son and so on id love to see some information on this. and whats interesting people dont know is that the rizzutos helped whack the 3 capos in the bonano family told by joe pistone and the boss of montreal rizzuto was charged for it and convicted also montreal rizzuto possibly cotroni to was or still is a branch of bonanos and they even were part of the french connection with carmine gallante really interesting stuff not many people know about. the canadian families are the least heat on them compared to americas family which has helped them prosper.

Love your channel. Can you do a video on Carmine “Lilo” Galante? He was feared and hated by so many in Cosa Nostra. He even arranged to have the doors of Frank Costello’s mausoleum blown off with dynamite.

Carmine Galante is one of the most interesting figures in all of mob history. Almost as much as either Lucky or Lansky (who I'm sure he worked as an enforcer for during Prohibition; bc by the '40's he was wacking ppl for Vito G after he was released for his arrest/indictment in '31 for killing a police officer and wounding two other children in a shootout for the officer trying to stop him and his crew pulling off a truck hijacking). Because of his role in the Pizza Connection heroin trade, and basically being the head of the entire narcotics trafficking racket into NYC, he obviously had sky-rocketed in terms of both power and infamy. His role as chauffeur then eventually both consigliere AND underboss to Joe Bonnano didn't take place until the mid-'50's, which is when Galante became in charge of both the "Pizza Connection," in Montreal AND a majority of the Bonnano family's enforcement until he was set up in a major narcotics bust with Genovese, Gigante, Billy Batts (of GOODFELLAS fame) and several other Sicilian immigrants that Galante brought over. These men were known as 'Zips,' and were Galante's major bodyguard/enforcers and traffickers, known for their savagery and willingness to attack women, kids, and willingness to use bombs (all rules against the American Commission). Once he was was released early in '74, he was not only arguably the biggest legend still active in LCN, other than Gmabino and his underboss Neil Dellacroce). Along with importing violent Zips, his brazen attempts to take complete control of the narcotics market (which involved him ordering the deaths of around EIGHT Gambino made men) and then eventually refusing to share said profits w the other families, as it truly was his personal racket he had set up around 20 years earlier. Also - he supposedly mentioned that he was gonna eventually take the position of "Boss of Bosses," which didn't even exist since Luciano abolished the position in '31, although Carlo Gambino held the position in all but actual name from 1959 until hid death in '76. The Commission's selection for boss, Phillip 'Rusty' Rastelli, went to the Commission (using his trusted capo Joe Massino as his messanger, who was already fearing for his life from Galante due to him answering to Rastelli in jail rather than Galante) delivered this message for Rusty to the Commission. The rest, as they say, is history....aforementioned Gambino underboss Dellacroce (a legendary hitman who acutally was one of Anastasia's proteges and was a low-key member of Murder Inc.) was given the contract, who then turned to Bonnano capo Alphonse "Sonny Red" Indelicatio to reach out to some of the Zips Galante has imported, particularly his bodyguard Cesare Bonventre, to arrange his murder. If you don't know how this story ended (for Galante, at least), then do your research bc it became arguably the greatest LCN hit of all-time in NYC, next to Anastasia's barbershop slaying in '57 and Castellano being gunned down outside of Sparks Steakhouse in '85. Ironically, the man who arranged Castellano's murder, who goes by the name of John Gotti (you've probabaly heard of him as he was also Neil Dellacroce's protege), was thoughly impressed by Galante while they served time at the same prison in the early '70's.....it's said that Galante was disappointed when he heard "John belonged to Neil,' as Neil was one of the few ppl still on the Commission that Galante viewed as an equal snf Galante REALLY wanted Gotti to become a Bonnano once they both were released in the mid '70's......

Nearly every story starts the same. None of them begin with ‘Tony graduated from Harvard before deciding on a life of crime.’ Lots of shootings, murders, only the names change. Still enjoyable to watch the stories - thank you.

Italian immigrants would never be allowed into Harvard back then. There was no affirmative action. Nobody cared about diversity or giving outsiders a chance. The WASPs carefully guarded their institutions.

Maybe it's a good thing that the narrator can't pronounce "Hebes" correctly. (It's "Heebs".) It just means that he - or the person who proofed the audio - have never been in the City.

L.A. Noire Very true. If only Lucky had adopted Gambino's practice of keeping a low profile, his family would probably still be known as the Luciano family instead of as the Genovese family. The man was a criminal genius, but for his Achilles heel of flashing his money.
