Franzese made the classic mistake Gotti did. He lived way too high off the hog. You can't act like that and not expect a ton of attention. He even admits today that it was immature and stupid of him. It's interesting because he always seems like a pretty level headed, savvy guy, but he couldn't keep himself from staying out of the limelight. You'd figure a guy as bright as he would have known that was a cardinal rule to break. Ironically, it's not a business for big egos. I remember a story about Carlo Gambino. He bought a new Cadillac, and a few people complimented him on the car. After he got a few compliments, he got rid of the car. There is a reason he held so much power and never spent any significant time in jail.

@leonardos2925 Жыл бұрын
It always is. Bureaucrats are always fighting against private citizens who challenge their privileges, by lobbying, invading your privacy (Proven many times by numerous well known leaks), and so on. They always want to achieve more at your expenses. They want more influence, power and status, and all of that is relative to private citizens. You’re paying their salaries, and they want to believe that it happens because they deserve more than you, not because they’re “serving” you (Producing less and receiving way more money than the private sector). The government is always trying to grow... how do you think we pay more taxes nowadays than one century ago? That’s it.

It was smart but it was not the brainchild of Franzese as some incorrectly still believe. It was started by the Russians in the mid 70s and was going on for years before Michael or any of the italian mob knew of it. Then Michael and a couple other mob figures found out about the scam and the money being made and they effectively muscled in, demanding a percentage tax of the profits. So Michael did not create it. He just got a piece of it through extortion as the Italians at the time were the strongest criminal group.
