By that point in the war Guncannons and Guntanks are common place. They have more than one of each on board Whitebase from the start. Jobjon and (I've forgotten the other guys name) often sortie alongside the main pilots, so it might be to show that it's no longer the an advanced prototype.

@@lordwisehammer No, I'm talking about the change from unit 108 to 104. The Gundam is 102, and Hayato's Guncannon has always been 109. MG Guncannon comes with decals for 108 or 109, so does the HG Revive. But for some reason in The Origin they changed Kai to 104. No 108 decal option, just 104 and 109. So far the only reason I can see is to annoy people like me who already built their other kits with the 108 decals.

@@simpleanswer8954 my point being that because they have multiple machines andnever specify whether any of the pilots are always using the same machine as the manga doesn't show unit designations in the artwork. He could simply be using one of the other Guncannons.

I guess because the three Gundams were 101 102 103 so the First Guncannon was 104

@@riblo72 That makes some sense. It's still a bit strange to me though. Hayato is still 109, so there's obviously other Guncannons for 105-108 that aren't in use on White Base. They could easily explain that those units were destroyed in the Zeon ambush that begins the show, and still leave Kai with 108 just for consistency. I'm not really curious why they used 104, I'm more curious as to why they changed it at all. What purpose did it serve? Honestly, I'm totally confused by the choice. Gundam is a huge franchise with tons of super fans that are really in to lore. Imagine if Disney changed Wedge from Red Two to Red Six and offered no explanation. Fans would be furious.
