At this moment, this is my favorite video. Just soldered in a ufl connector on a mob6 board with a blown esc… practice for the real one. Went pretty smoothly, the only thing I did different was in soldering the active element. That I hit from the other side of the board. Fluke says AOK…. On to the real deal Thursday when I get some antennas in the mail. Thanks for the effort!

@@drewbooFPV to say it went well would be an understatement. Went from flying maybe 40 yards before snow and rx warnings, to turning the corner and flying down the side of the park, across the back and up the other side. Just an acre, but with mature trees ringing it, and they were between the whoop and me. This new distance has opened up some things to go try.

Lol, it's a tight weld. I'm very happy with the range. The one thing I didn't consider, the center of gravity changes a little and during really aggressive snap rolls and flips, it gets pushed and over shoots a little. I don't think it's a big deal with such a tiny, under powered, quad because this is intended more for cruising around - no one will even know your there..

Excellent video, and excellent work, sir! I'm glad I found this, I've built basically the same thing with my Mobula 6, but using the BetaFPV HX100se frame, which is a gorgeous little piece of carbon fiber art work, and possibly using some 1102 motorsm. John Moore (that's his yt channel) did the same and posted a video or two about it, also great work. But I was considering ways to increase range, and I"m really glad I found your channel, I am definitely hitting all the buttons for this video, and I'm going to do both of these mods as soon as I get a chance... Nifty little trick I came across the other day working on a similar build, that might be applicable here: I cut a couple inches of one of the skinny red extension tubes from a can of WD40, and it slipped perfectly over the receiver wire on a similar build. Then I cut a short section off the trimmed-off end of a small zip tie, about 1/2", folded it, and sorta wrapped it around the end of the red straw. I drilled a small hole through both end of the little zip piece, ran a small screw through it, and into a hole I drilled in the canopy; once tightened down, the 'strap' held the straw perfectly, plus allowed me to fiddle the angle to my liking... It's a tiny little version of the same thing they did on the BetaFPV X-Knight 4" Toothpick, another excellent-looking little beast. Anyway, thank you for this really well done and informative video, I will be recommending it to numerous others. Kudos!

Update 5/16 5pmEST: I flew today at the field and was super impressed with the vtx antenna upgrade. However, I'm on the fence whether or not the receiver antenna was necessary. I will edit that video soon. I may place the stock receiver antenna back on and run to the field to see if there was a significant difference. The Stock Whoop video went bad before I could even come close to maxing the receiver out..

I've read that people get better rssi with shorter Rx antenna on this board. As short as 25mm. I'm going to experiment once the smoke and ash clear from the area. Also, the vtx ground seemed the most accessible for the shield ground, I'm surprised you didn't consider it.

if you do SMD even just occasionally, i can highly recommend some proper noclean flux, loaded into a bonkote flux pen. a "third hand tool with loupe" also becomes indispensables, once you have one ... and they're just way too much fun to dramatically pose on your workbench afte use. :D one slightly overkill overkill option for an antenna would be to remove the plastic case form a lollipop antenna. what's left propably weights under half a gram PS: two little insider tricks: a) secure the tiddly connector with hot glue. if it pops off during a crash, it's ususally the end for you vTX. with a drop of alcohol, that hot snot easily peels off. and b) you can find a ground pin on virtually any chip on a board, usually at one of the corners. that long botch-wire "might" cripple the antenna's performance through some microwave voodoo.

After putting some solder on the ground pads and center I found I had continuity between the center element and ground pads, although I can't really see a solder bridge. I've tried mopping up the solder with solder wick but there's still continuity. Is it toast or can I rescue the VTx on this board? I do have a TBS nano VTx that I could add to the build following your video on disabling the on-board VTx... Thanks!

Out of the 9 Mobula Whoop boards (Crazybee..x.x..x) that have failed me, the continuity between ground and the active pad usually means the component of the VTX are shorted. I have since gone with only external VTX whoop boards. Oddly enough, I'm currently enjoying the Betafpv V2.1 (ONLY THE 2.1). I like the Reaper nano VTX too... If you see no visible bridge, obvious components causing the short, my video to disable the on-board is probably the best thing to do, unfortunately. Actually I've had trouble setting the band/frequency on the reaper, and I'm wondering if the lousy video is in fact the onboard VTx that is not fully disabled, perhaps with some interference from the reaper on a different channel (I find the leds flash very fast and are difficult to count, and I'm not sure I am actually changing the band/frequency using the button presses). When I disabled the VTx I popped off the cover of the puck and pulled out the coil, but was not able to get it down to the pads as you described; could it still be active? Any advice would be great! I found it very difficult to solder the FC board, especially the capacitors. But I definitely have power to the reaper...

@@christopherjerome7392 The jumper across the caps is important to get correct and clean. Use plenty flux! If you removed the coil and not the base, there's a small chance voltage is still reaching the internal VTX components - smashed the base with a pair of needle nose pliers. Not sure why you'd opt for button pushing? In my video I show how to connect smart audio control...

question, why didnt you ground the receiver to the same ground as the VTX? the board I want to mod has a replaceable receiver antennae, but what looks like a monopole VTX, and Im thinking of putting a cage or lollipop onto the current location the VTX antennae is currently sitting. You suppose I could do the same thing you did withthe receiver?
@propsoff
@propsoff 2 жыл бұрын
I chose to ground the receiver straight to the lipo ground due to possible heat issues. The VTX portion of the PDB can get very warm and the ground can suffer. To not have to worry about it, I went to the source. I don't see why you couldn't do that. Just be sure there's no active portion of the VTX wire exposed at the base (or very little).

@@propsoffI'm new to FPV but used to design/build lots of high speed and RF electronics in a former life. When dealing with grounds and RF, shorter is always better. Too long and the ground doesn't act like an RFground due to inductance. I'd be curious to see the VTX ground pad used for the RX antenna with only a nub ground wire. I'm learning to fly on a Mob6 so maybe I'll try the mod myself. Thanks for the video!

@@srutx Definitely come back and report your findings! I have played with some different lengths over the years. 2012, was the first time ripping half my rx in half and the length experiments started. I was mostly talking to super longrange guys in Europe. I now find my self flying in urban areas or racing environments - short range and high multi-path. I would image the fact that we're only using a fraction of a watt, it's probably not as relevant. I will argue, 32.8.mm length 2.4ghz RX antenna is best...👍🏻🍻👊🏻

@@propsoff I hope too! As soon as I stop crashing into fixed objects LOL. Just to be clear, I"m not talking about the exposed center conductor of the RX coax (the active element, 32.8mm). Rather I'm talking about the grounded shield of the coax. When you peel back the braided shield, add the wire and connect it on the opposite side of the board at the battery, the extension wire acts as an inductor and the antenna shield acts less as a ground at the 2.4GHz frequency. Not trying to be pedantic just clarifying. Personally I'll do the VTX first. thanks.

Well I guess I have a problem with this mod on my Mob6 HD... I just switched the receiver antenna and tried to connect to my transmitter. It would sort of connect, as I was able to arm the quad, but I did not get telemetry... I then disassembled everything again to check continuity and I had a short between my antenna core (measured at the antenna tip) and GND... Then unsoldered the antenna to check continuity of the sleeve to the core and there was no beep, perfectly isolated. Only when I measured the antenna pad to GND I got a beep... The Rx antenna pad does not have a ground pad right next to it, right? I see no solder bridges... Soldering the new antenna with only the core to the pad at least connected reliably again, but where does the antenna pad connect to ground? It can't be a revised board by Happymodel, where they botched it, right?
@propsoff
@propsoff 3 жыл бұрын
Your antenna core (active element) should not have continuity to ground. The sheath goes to ground and that ground can come from any available ground. The antenna "pad" is a single wire receiver solder pad. It is designed to have a 32.8mm single (multi-strand) wire come from it to receive the 2.4ghz transmission from your radio. The modification is simply to get that 32.8mm active element out of the interference of the electronics in the canopy area. To get it higher up in the clear, you follow? The reason you can't just solder a longer wire is it won't be tuned to 2.4ghz.. The ground sheath allows the active element to extend and still maintain that perfect signal band.. Sure hope this helps?
@jawolllinger
@jawolllinger 3 жыл бұрын
@@propsoff Thanks for the input, the problem is though that the antenna "pad" has continuity to ground without anything soldered to it, too... I can't find any solder bridges, that could connect the pad to ground externally somehow... When I got the drone I had a solder bridge between my VTX antenna and the ground pad closer to the chip next to it. But the VTX pad is isolated from ground, the RX pad isn't...

This is a really good question. I hate to answer a question with a question, however, it's really necessary. How large of an area do you plan to fly? You have narrowed your search a lot by saying your wanting to stay under 250g. There are some really cool options out there. Because you already have 1s packs and the system to charge them, budget wise, stay with that concept and build the "Babytooth 3incher". It is absolutely amazing and the acro is something else. It has surprised most electronic, technically inclined people. The only issue I've seen so far is the motors are hard to get - FPV Cycle. That would be my next build if I was stepping up from the Mobula6. Again, it depends mostly on the space your wanting to fly..

The idea of doing the receiver upgrade came from a buddy of mine that is a very active whoop racer in Cleveland Ohio. He did a similar modification to his Mobula and said it performed much better. I took his word for it, due to him flying all through a hotel they were staying at. I hope to get some range tests soon. I have both, a stock Mobula 6 whoop and this crazy little thing. I figured if I fly the stock whoop straight out until it drops and then the "Pick", until it drops and measure the difference. I would say if it isn't a big difference, it wouldn't be worth even doing. I do have my fingers crossed it wasn't a waste. Now, if the rain would please go away, lol..
