Apparently it used to be thought that the really big manta rays were dangerous and could sink large boats, until like the 1970s where people went diving with them and discovered that rays are actually pretty chill animals.

Actually, In some parts of Irish folklore legends, these mobula rays were sought as the children of mermaids, mermaidens and merrow-maidens. It would have been that these were newly hatched devilfishes jumping around in joy, were the juvenile form of merrows before they grow...

Notice how they don't simply jump, they slap the water at just the right moment, or at least make sure their bodies are absolutely flat on the point of impact. The fact that the females simply do it for fun and sommersault is just amazing. We were all put here to be free and enjoy this planet.

How have I never seen this before!? Seriously, I love nature shows and I've have watched hundreds and hundreds of shows over my life yet somehow I have never seen a program that showed these magnificent creatures "hangin ten" as it were. LOL I've seen lot of critters breaching the water but man oh man these guys take it to the next level I tell you what, that awesome :)

Exactly my thoughts! My favorite books at age 2 were the Book of Fishes and the Book of Reptiles and Amphibians. I had all of the animals memorized, knew where they lived and they never gave me nightmares. Some of my favorites were the Gila monster, Giant Clam pictured with a scuba diver trapped in it, venomous snakes and the shark said best in my Boston accent- Ham-a- head! I was a riot, and I brought my daughter up the same way, marvelled at the animals we'd never heard of in new nature programs, and how those shows make us kids again. ALWAYS new creatures to discover and thrill us! We almost had strokes when the iguanas raced to get away from the snakes chasing them relentlessly in one Planet Earth episode. We called it like the Kentucky Derby, screaming our heads off!

I will never forget the first time I saw this down in Cabo. When we were flying down the cost there were these MASSIVE, undulating, dark areas, off of the shore. Every once in awhile you would see a splash. Later that evening I was sitting by the pool and started to see things jumping and splashing. I grabbed my camera and zoomed in as close as I could get it. These were the guys I say. Throughout that week everyone at the pool was amazed how close they would come to shore and the show that we would get. They are in Cabo April and May.

Today I saw a Manta Ray jump out of the ocean about 50 yards from the shore line. I see dolphins all the time at the beach in South Carolina, but seeing a 10 ft wide ray fly out of the water was mesmerizing. My German Shepherd who is obsessed with the ocean came out of the water right before it jumped. He must of sensed them when he went to retrieve his toy. Really cool stuff
