I take a look at the special edition of Moby Dick that's almost as big as the eponymous whale itself.

This book is the holy grail of modern printings of Moby Dick... You're lucky to find a copy used in Fine or near Fine for under $3000 these days..

I finally purchased this myself after becoming as obsessed with this version as captain Ahab was with the 🐳 - it is by far my most beautiful book I own

A very good choice! It is stunning. I love it. But I hate that whale!

If one is not able to acquire this certainly wonderful Folio Society edition (because of price or availability), I would recommend the Arion Press trade edition (either hardback or softcover), which is very nice indeed, with excellent illustrations.

I feel your pain. I have a number of books I'm afraid to read for risk of damaging them. It's a tough one. Hard to properly enjoy them when you have to be so careful.

There is one mystery about this text which may seem like a nitpick, but it keeps nagging me. Chapter 33 is often spelled “The Specksynder”, but some editions have it spelled “The Specksnyder”. As a Dutchman myself, I know that the last spelling is the historically correct one. (In Dutch it is spelled “speksnijder”.) My question would be if Herman Melville originally wrote “specksnyder”, or if he spelled it “specksynder”.

Interesting. I bet we'll never know, unless the original manuscript is available.
