This is mandatory stuff in jazz studies, and one of the reasons why jazz soloists are able to improvise more lyrically using chord tones instead of scales up and down. One thing you can also try (besides the great ideas Rick shows here) is going up the I chord (Fmaj7 in the examples), tonic, maj3rd, 5th, maj7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, octave (or rather the 2nd octave) and come down playing the tones from the next chord (G-7), being octave, 13th, 11th, 9th, 7th, 5th, min3rd and tonic, then going up the next one (A-7), tonic, min3rd, 5th, 7th, b9, 11th, 13th, 2nd octave etc, until all the diatonic chords of F are played through. You can also do the same thing descending from the 13th fret but upside down: play the F chord from the 2nd octave (1st stringt), then 13th, 11th, 9th, maj7th, 5th, 3rd, tonic, then up E-7b5, etc.

I love concept lessons I can apply to my own stuff. As soon as I heard the first arpeggio I was inspired. I tried playing smaller bites and inversions as well with other licks I already know and the possibilities are endless and incredibly style expanding...at least for me. Thanks for all the lessons you share. They have been extreeemely helpful, but also inspirational. Some days I need that kick in the pants that helps me break out of my regular practice routine to try to add colour to my playing.

These sound great, and maybe even better through 2 octaves. Well, it would be 4 octaves, but not enough frets on the guitar. You could do any mode in E up to 24th fret and back down
