MODDING a Cheap Mic = As Good As A HIGH-END TUBE MIC?? (Was Jim Lill Right?)

Jim Lill is a youtuber who basically proved that the capsule is where 99% of a microphone's sound comes from. Is he right? Today I'll do some tests with a mic I modded using the same capsule he did.

The phase cancelled recording at the end sounds pretty interesting, could be an useful effect for an intro.

Listening on a TV soundbar, the main difference I hear between the tube and modded mics is that the tube mic has less mud and more high end. An audible difference, not by too much. Obviously the less post-processing required the better, but for home recording a modded mic sounds like it'll take you far.

when i record my piano covers with my phone they sound so bad i either need to get a mic like this or find a way to record them digitally directly to my phone through wires, bit complicated

as someone who bought 10,000+ dollars worth of mics. I will only use Neumann TLM 103.

You know I had an entire, well thought out comment written but then I looked at your channel and realized it isn't worth it. For anyone else reading this, the TLM 103 is $1200 right now, whereas the MXL 440 is $75 and the Mic-Parts RK-12 capsule is $170 for a total of $250 (including time and solder), and that's all you need to know

Why did you go to a "luthier" to solder 2 wires? Get a soldering iron 😶 6:13 those highs really don't sound great to my ears. Very harsh. Would need some EQ or a de-esser on it to use it for voice-over. Definitely improved with the other capsule.
