With Deltarune Chapter 2 finished, I decided to remake an older video where I ask if Toby Fox's Undertale sequel might be one of the best games to play with a non-gamer. In this video, I want to show you how I led my Mom and a friend who has never played games before through Deltarune and how you can do the same!

I thought this was a decent sized channel until I checked the comments. You certainly deserve more attention! That aside, I've actually tried a few times to introduce my parents to games I thought they'd like, but overall they couldn't understand much of it. It's nice to see someone making videos specifically for this purpose, to teach someone who hasn't played a game how to play a game.

Yes, for players who played Undertale, the opening would be great: learning that in this game your choices don't matter, seeing the old goat mum again, talking to familiar faces even if they are not as friendly as in Undertale. But for those who haven't played Undertale, it would be like torture: the character you designed is just thrown, you need to look at a long scene while doing nothing, talking to nearly the whole class, and then another scene without options......

on-top of that, Undertale and Deltarune are both specifically meant for people who have played enough RPGs to get the jokes and the references. I don't think Toby expects anyone who hasn't played games before to even consider playing either. EDIT: shit someone already said that whoops

@Aviivix

It feels like Undertale and Deltarune are like, the opposite of games that should be used for this. The whole reason these games were loved was that they played with expectations of what these games were like. (Deltarune itself is sort of a double parody since in a way it's playing on your Undertale expectations.) With no expectations it's just an odd gaming experience. I think there's also an important factor in considering what kinds of things they already like. If someone isn't into puzzles, then the puzzle sections of Deltarune would be double frustrating because their inexperience makes them take thrice as long on a section they just want to be over and done with in the first place. But if they're a puzzle nerd then they may just get bored with the rest. There's too much variety in Deltarune because, again, it's playing on both Undertale and general gameplay tropes. But a new gamer should probably start with a game dedicated to one concept and playing it mostly straight. Baba Is You I find is a great non-gamer puzzle game. My grandma plays it and I barely had to show her what things did. (In general the less controls there are the easier it is for people to grasp, because there's less time fiddling with those and more time focusing on the game itself.) For strategy, Pokemon may be a decent choice - particularly the ones that denote type effectiveness for you on the menu rather than making you memorise the type chart. Ace Attorney may also be a decent choice - there's NO movement whatsoever, and it's all menus. I noticed your mom skipped cutscenes and dialog and such, and thus didn't seem to want to track the story in this story-driven game. A lot of non-gamers only view games through the lens of Mario and mobile games where story has never been a thing. Ace Attorney might be a nice way to show people that games can be storytelling tools because the game itself is about paying attention to the story. My grandmother plays this too.

Yeah thats something true, I first introduced one of my Friends to deltarune and he got bored, then I introduced him to Undertale and It was so much better. Undertale has his mecanics a little more explained and It is linear with little things to worry. The you go to deltarune to chapter 2 for example and you have: 1° The enemy 2° HP of member 3° HP of enemy 4° Spare metter 5° Toilet paper 6° All the action botons 7° The TP heart shape that appears when you are close to a bullet, making you think the hitbox of the heart is bigger. 8° The form to attack enemies. 9° Multiplicate the point 2 and 6 by 3 because you have 3 Party members. 10° Multiplicate the points 1,3 and 4 by 3 because you can have 3 enemies at the screen at a time. Then you have Undertale Battle sistem that is: 1° Four bottons 2° Your HP 3° 3 enemies at Max 4° Enemies HP 5° Battle system And nothing more.

With all due respect,Deltarune and undertale are atrocious as beginner gamers. There’s just so much in regards to there narrative structure that relies on the audience knowing video game tropes and conventions, that mean nothing to a non gamer. For example the whole sparing mechanic ,is unique and innovative to a Gamer who is used to killing every thing they see, but literally means nothing to a non gamer ,and so many small details and jokes will straight up not make sense. Add to that the density and plot heaviness of these games which may seem great at first ,but a lot of new gamers have this just cross the finish line mentality which will make them frustrated when they find a lot of side content, pile all that up with small genre shifts ,deltarune’s extremely hard hidden bosses and way more ,to make those tow games horrible as beginner gamers.

However I had trouble opening the menus, didn't know how to equip items until halfway through the first chapter, got frustrated at the opening of the game, had to ask my brother how to hook up an xbox controller instead of the computer keyboard because I didn't understand the buttons. I also conpletely forgot healing items were a thing whenever I fought and eventually defeated Queen because the mechanics of the robot battle was so unfamiliar. Now, Deltarune is one of my favorite games and I'm on my third replay now.

I have a small suggestion to put the manual you made into the game more diegetically. Perhaps make the manual Ralsei gives you display the one you made by pressing a specific button? For example if someone is still confused they can just press H for help. Maybe even expand the Manual in chapter 2?

This reminds me of that time I bought the new animal crossing for the switch because I wanted to share an Island with my mother and thought she would understand the gameplay because we played the animal crossing mobile game a lot. Oh I was wrong, she ended up frustrated and losing interest in the game. Mainly because she had to learn to use a lot of buttons while in the mobile game you just do everything with just one tap on the screen.

With your mom defeating the king on her second try, the same thing happened to me. While I do tend to know the pattern of Toby Fox games, I am absolutely horrible at fights and the like (for example, it took me 2 hours to defeat the mini game with the Queen that is supposed to take you 30-60 seconds that ends up being the same thing as the final battle with her. also it took me way too many tries to defeat berdly in chapter 2...). I died so many times in chapter 1 to small environmental mechanics and then it only took me 2 tries to defeat the king. Idk if the King just weird, or your mom and I got lucky, but its interesting to note. Like, one of my friends who is very good at games also took 3 tries and that was the first time they died in the game. Who knows!

It's really cool that you do this. Most game devs are focused on marketing to people who already play games (understandably), while there truly is a lot of potential for people who aren't part of the whole gamer culture. My mom enjoys a few games here and there, like she likes some Mario games, and she liked early computer puzzle/strategy games. She even played Kingdom Hearts a bit when I was a kid and really enjoyed that. These days when I try to help her find games, she gets overwhelmed easily, not only by the things you're expected to know going in (like when we tried to get into Pokemon together), but even just the process of getting the game to begin with. You can't just go to the store and buy a disc with a game on it, or order it online, and downloadable games are something I'm only familiar with on Steam, which is something she has no interest in using. She also just doesn't want to buy games anymore since they rarely meet her expectations.... But that makes gifting games more difficult, too. I'm interested to see more of your videos and try to figure out a solution for my mom. Thank you so much for doing things to make games more accessible! If only more game developers would take some small steps of their own to provide options for beginners.

You know, watching this video brought back a buried memory within me. Like, this was exactly how I was when I first played Video Games. It didn’t help that I played Counterstrike for most of that time which crippled my initial idea of what controls are when it came to emulators on keyboard, but that’s besides the point. @@EtrasGames4NonGamers That's fair, but you don't have the ruthless button puzzle in Undertale and a semi-complex battle system. But as you said, the narrative revolves around alien concepts to new players, which would leave the story dull and confusing. This was a really fascinating video... I've always been interested in the way difficulty and motivation play a role in the flow of video game progression and how the types of tropes video game mechanics have cause there to be a certain divide amongst "gamers and non-gamers." I am a supporter of video games as an art form and it's my passion to see as many people as possible come to appreciate the games I love... but that's not always so easy for everybody because many video games rely on that so-to-speak language, like modulating inputs, and a sense of intuition for video games. It also makes a lot of sense why it's more common for younger people to have a better time of gaining an attunement for learning how to play video games; they have a higher neuroplasticity which allows them to make the requisite neural connections for learning to play and understand the way video games work sort of like learning your first language. First of all, I wonder if a lack of manuals in video games these days has crippled peoples' ability to learn to play games and second, I wonder if the way video games are taught to adults could be different sort of like how you'd teach an adult to learn a new language based on the fundamentals of grammar from their native tongue. Really fascinating stuff. I've also seen some videos by KZfaqrs like Rasbuten who have done studies on this kind of stuff. I wonder if this kind of research could be applied in a mass widespread way and if we could see some sort of change come out of it. Video game difficulty is a topic that people always bring up, but it's not something people can always get to the root of. I believe there's something more there and that it's worth getting to. Keep up the good work!
