You would likely be pleased with any of the ODE options. What the MODE has an advantage of compared to all of the others is the ability to use SSD hard drive and hold as many games as you want. SD Cards are limited by size and if you want a big one (still too small to hold every game) it costs more than a hard drive.
@RetrOrigin3 жыл бұрын
I had a MODE installed on my Saturn and ended up moving it to a spare Dreamcast. The Fenrir is more than enough and you can get 512GB SD cards cheaply (around $50) if you keep an eye on Amazon sales, which is enough to hold the entire Saturn library.

@@RetrOrigin 512gb is not enough to hold the entire saturn library, unless you leave out many Japanese exclusives. There is also hacks and translations and the full USA library. The card I use is GigaStone, and it works perfectly fine not only on my Fenrir, but I also had one on my PSIO prior to getting an XStation and had tested it with no problems on my USBGDROM using and SD to USB card reader adapter. so there's absolutely no need to stick to SanDisk.

Very enticing feature of the mode is using a SSD harddrive. I like the idea of dumping an entire library on the SSD for a "set it and forget it" functionality. My other ODE's like the gdemu, I have to remember exactly how to add or remove games using some weird protocols or gui's. The space on sd cards is small and the bigger cards are much more expensive than a SSD. You might end up saving yourself money with the MODE in the longrun. That said, I already have PSIO, GDEMU, and the Phoebe installed so all these newer options are just more money sinks for very few advantages. I plan to hold out in the future for Analogue products which are where it's really at. The newly announced Analogue Duo is their first system with a CD and I expect this will help them go as far as the PS1 and Saturn consoles eventually.

@@cencil6497 I would agree, but honestly, when you have discs that refuses to be read along with the laser going bad/dying later on due to how they are used, you are better off with the ODE or another way to play off a hard drive. Like a great example is my OG Xbox. The disc drive on my OG Xbox is so bad that it barely reads discs at all and even if it can read them it can at random just stop reading the disc while playing the game. This is why I have it soft modded and is able to install games on to a hard drive to play them off the hard drive which also gives it faster load times. To me without it I don't know how I would play games on it besides getting a new Xbox which I don't want to do. I got an ODE for my Dreamcast and it's been amazing. Plus my Dreamcast had trouble reading some discs as well, actual GD-ROM discs when a game refuses to get past a load screen. I want to get an ODE for my Saturn, and the one I want doesn't replace the disc drive so it's the best of both worlds. To me ODEs actually extend the life of a console because once that laser has trouble reading discs and dying, that's it, either get it replaced and then it'll have trouble later on since they can only last so long or get a ODE and be at a peace of mind not needing to worry about disc wear, scratched discs over time, laser issues, etc.

The issue with MODE is, yeah it supports multiple systems but its not exactly plug and play is it? So while it supports multiple consoles you will probably only ever use in 1 as swapping it when u fancy playing another system is just not a feasible task. So better off buying the much cheaper ODEs for individual consoles.

Would be cool if a cradle was printed to slide onto the bottom of each console and have a small "cartridge case" akin to a floppy drive that allows you to remove the hard drive and swap out to the next console and the ode had an additional extension cable to plug into the "cartridge case" so you don't have to keep opening your console.

There is this theoretical endpoint I see approaching that offers me extreme piece of mind. With the MiSter potentially covering everything in the CD era, it leaves Dreamcast, PS2 and N64 as the final non-HDMI consoles requiring the most TLC. If MODE ends up supporting PS2 in the future... and paired with a Retrotink 5x, it feels like the odd man out is goimg to be N64 for probably another decade until an FPGA can handle something so complex at the consumer market level. The future looks bright.

@@masterlee1988 Yeah, and that's why it's so sad to see it get ignored continually even though it has such a uniquely compelling feature (perfect digital video ala Hi-Def NES). GameTechUS actually did a video about UGX-01 back in 2016 but he didn't mention that they planned to update it with an ODE. Good thing, since the UGX-01 needs hardware mods for that (didn't have enough RAM). Ignoring the launch of the UGX-01, it's hard to say which launched first. UGX-02 was supposed to launch in late 2017 but had a last-second delay until early 2018. A few modified/upgraded UGX-01 units with ODE functionality made it out earlier. SSDS³ was supposed to be early 2018 but the launch was scuttled after a few preorders slipped through. It relaunched weeks later, just after the UGX-02.

I don't know why anyone would feel like they need to be able to access the USB when they already have an SSD connected, but it must be said, most SSDs have a much smaller PCB than the case it's fitted into. You could remove it from it's case and either get a smaller custom case for it or just attach it without a case leaving you with the ability to have your SSD and still be able to access the USB port as well.

Really happy with my PSIO since I can still play original discs. I got a Fenrir for my Saturn since I don't intend to collect those games ever. Satiator is cool since it doesn't replace the OD but man talk about overpriced. I hope we see a lot more ODEs that don't actually replace the optical drive since it's so useful for collectors. Now if someone can create a Saturn HDMI solution (yes I know it's borderline impossible due to the weird of saturn GPUs) I can finally get rid of my OSSC and be full digital to digital HDMI and wireless controllers for my entire setup. It's wild how far retro gaming has changed in the past 10 years.

Love love love what you do guys!!! Amazing video as always, thanks. These units are great - I have to say that the original disc drives with original discs are part of the retro experience for me. Loading from SSD just wouldn’t feel authentic. Great they’re available for when the drives all eventually die though.
@masterlee19883 жыл бұрын
Honestly, ODEs and soft mods actually extend the life of a console when the laser on the drive has issues. I am facing it right now and one of my consoles is practically unusable due to almost never reading the discs properly and I don't want to have to get the laser replaced or buy another console. Plus original discs can have issues and instead of having to make so many backups of the games I own I would just store them on an SD Card/hard drive and call it a day. I consider these to enhance the retro experience with being able to choose any game you want without disc swapping, relying on a new/used SD card/hard drive instead of a disc drive that will have trouble reading the discs and possibly dying, and usually these ODEs would even have faster load times which comes in handy as long load times are never a good thing.

@@andykara2003 Yeah I have a preference of original hardware and as long as you can still use them with certain things that can either fix or improve on the experience that's fine by my books. @@masterlee1988 Absolutely, having thought about it, the most important thing to me is that the original silicone is driving the game.
