It's OK being able to own a gun as long as you don't shoot people with it, as I understand here in the UK people get a gun licence to use the gun at a gun club. The licence doesn't then allow them to use the gun outside the gun club, the gun stays at the club securely locked up. Unless it's a shotgun etc for example to be used for huntung shooting rabbits, pigeons etc. But I don't think you could justify owning a hand gun such as 44 magnum to shoot rabbits for example

Got my 44 mag 4" in 1976 from Mel Rogers gunsmith who before he retired was a treasury agent but more importantly a World Champion Shooter in the 30'S thru the 50'S taught me alot I reloaded 22 grains of 2400 with a Keith 250 429421 round or 17.5 grains of same load but I've sinced retired it and it's 6 1/2" brothers. Blued and nickeled twins.

I have a 357 Magnum Model 686 4" barrel White outline Brushed that I've had for over 40 years, although I sold a 357 Magnum Mod 66-2 brushed 6" barrel for the same price as I'd paid over 10-years after purchasing it. It was bought by an Okaloosa County FL Deputy Sheriff. We also used that 686 with the Sheriffs Law Enforcement Posts, because all of the deputies at the meeting were carrying were automatics, and you can't show the difference with a pistol. I took one of the deputies out to my truck opened the tail after turning off the alarm system and unlocked the gun case and allowed the deputy to see what I had with me. We took the weapon back into the SO's office and then let the Advisor see the weapon and then show the cadets the differences. But it surprised him and the 10 other deputies at that meeting. One of them bought that model 66-2. The one comment was the trigger wasn't touchy enough. My comment was I didn't want a hairline trigger on any weapon. Yeah, I also have a G Lock Mod 19 but prefer the 686 to it.

Thank you, Hickok, for this wonderful video. Those older, P&R’ed, N Frames that Smith produced through the early 1970’s were, in my opinion, the finest generally available and largely affordable revolvers ever made. Their quality, craftsmanship, reliability, durability and accuracy are superb. And they remain entirely viable for so many purposes (home defense, concealed carry, hunting, target shooting, and plain enjoyable plinking). I don’t own a M29 from that era, but I do love my five-inch barrel M27-2 (.357 magnum/.38 Special). FWIW, I really prefer the five-inch barrel length; it’s still short enough to be handy and concealable (at least in the colder months), but that extra inch provides slightly more velocity, sight radius, and recoil mitigation. Further, it’s an optimized length between purely defensive and hunting revolvers. I envy your M29. Cherish it and fun with it.

@Craig Wooldridge No, it's because I have enough personal experience with Taurus to cut through the brand snobbery and misinformation that interweb fools repeat. I have several $1000+ guns that others may not appreciate. Some are muzzleloaders. So, I'm not against spending more to get what I want, but I passed up a (cheap) unfired 4" 629 for $700 and gave $535 out the door for my Model 44. I've shot mine enough to know that i made the right decision for what I wanted a 4" .44 Mag for...and I'd make the same choice every time. There's nothing WRONG with the S&W, there's just not enough to be gained to make it worth the extra $$$ to me...and I'm not buying guns to make money on them. I'm buying guns I want to keep and shoot.

Also, the thing I LOVE about Smith's, especially the 70's and early 80's guns, is they have a wonderful double action trigger. The '2 click' trigger, you can almost stage it, and line up on your target. Now, if your good, you get get real fast and accurate with the double action pull. Try it. Get your Smith out(make sure it's unloaded)and slowly pull on the trigger! Doesn't get any better than those Smith's.

The blued 29-2 with the counterbored cylinders in 4" was my favorite, I had added Pachmayr grips much like Nick Nolte had in "48 Hours". It was a dream to shoot, the 180gr Rem.HP threw fire for about a block, I used HSM 250gr magnums for qualification, because 44 special were almost twice the price of magnums, and I had to supply my own ammo as the gun was non-issued. It got stolen from my brother's car in the mid 80s. He bought me an Elmer Keith commemorative, which I have yet to shoot, as a replacement. My 28-2 is a 6 inch and it really tames the 357, although today's ammo is much more tame than that of the 1980s. If I could get that gun back...

You didn't make a mistake. The no dash 629s would shoot loose with a lot of magnum loads! When S&W came out with the S&W 29-4 they finally had the lock work strong enough for shooting a lot of magnums. But earlier S&Ws are fine if you don't shoot a lot of .44 magnums and shoot loads equivalent to hot .44 Specials Cheers

Hickok45 is phenomenal, he just taught me that a 44 mag shooting 44 Special is considerable easier to manage the recoil which leads to improved acuracy. I have been shooting my .357 Ruger LCR with full on magnum rounds, my hand gets bruised from 15 rounds to the point I put it up and shoot one of my other weapons. I will still load pistol with magnum rounds as I carry it concealed however, I will buy some .38 special to practice. Thank you 45

I just took delivery today on almost the exact same gun, Model 29-2 4" barrel, high polish bluing, just beautiful. And yeah, I paid a decent hunk o'change, but I don't care, because it'll only go up in value, as nobody goes to the trouble to make them like this anymore. Thanks Hickok 45 for illumination and education.

I have a 4 inch 629 no dash, and lighter cast bullet loads are still a pleasure to shoot with arthritic hands. The hot loads are just too much these days, but I won't quit shooting my favorite Smith. Those light loads allow me to still have a little fun on the range. Thanks for a great video !!

I'm down to one 629 4" now and one 624 4" and 1 625 Mountain Gun 45 Colt. I'm in the process of being phased out. Those aren't my only handguns but they are the ones I love most, along with my M28 4". Today I'm going back and watching my favorite hickok45 videos and of course they are all S&W N-frame revolvers. Hope I can get back to the range again before long.

I am a big fan of the .44. I have several in both .44 special and .44 magnum, including a blue 4" S&W model 29-2. There is such a variety of bullet weights and styles for the hand loader to choose from. The 4"model, as you pointed out , can be quite painful to shoot with full power loads. However, with slightly reduced loads with lighter bullets can be very pleasant to shoot and still have plenty of power for hunting medium size game, such as hogs and deer. 240gr lead semi-wadcutter bullets loaded to about 900fps are a delight to shoot. Thanks for another great video.

That little shotty there with its powerful round, is all that one needs...from living way up north around bears, to way down south defending the family from bad guys. The 44 special is a bit more powerful than a .45 ACP round, and its big brother The 44 Magnum is in a class by itself.

I owned one of these in the early 1980s... short version: as dusk approached on a dirt back country road, a buddy razzed me about the ridiculously short barrel and said he bet that I couldn’t hit a softball sized rock at about 30 yards down the old road. A quick draw later, a HUGE ball of flame and super-thunderclap shattered our senses! Once our vision was restored in the almost dark road, I was pleased to point out that the aforesaid rock was gone... all in primitive hand signs as it was an hour until our hearing was back to normal. I sold it the following week... I still had my 12 inch heavy barrel in .44mag, and loved shooting it... during the day... and while wearing hearing protection!

Congratulations on your beautiful new vintage model 29! What a beauty! I know this will be sinful to a Smith lover like yourself, but one of my favorite handguns is my 4.2” Ruger Redhawk. I tend to shoot a lot of magnums so I appreciate the extra beefiness & heft of a Ruger. Smiths are beautiful though.
