Model Building HO Southern Pacific Consist Part 15 - Cotton Belt B30-7 7787 Body and Cab
The SP Consist Build series is about Dan's efforts to recreate a set of 5 locomotives he photographed on the front of a Southern Pacific grain train in Truckee, California in 1993. There were two SP SD45Rs, a Cotton Belt B30-7, a Conrail SD40, and an EMD Leasing GP38-2.
In the last episode of the Southern Pacific consist build, Dan completed his HO scale model of Conrail SD40 6283.
In this episode Dan resumes work on the only General Electric locomotive in the build, Cotton Belt B30-7 7787.
Dan is modeling this locomotive as it appeared when he photographed it, in traditional scarlet and gray paint. Not long after this photo was taken, SP repainted 7787 into the 1990s era speed lettering scheme.
When Dan photographed it, SSW 7787 had been “lobotomized”, losing its oscillating lights and emergency lights. It gained a beacon, but had not yet been fitted with ditch lights.
In this episode Dan finishes most of the details for the locomotive body.
He also cuts into the cab, doing some surgery to change it from a generic B30-7 cab to a prototype-specific cab appropriate for SP and Cotton Belt.
Like many SP diesels, these Cotton Belt units were delivered with “L” shaped engineer’s windows. Over time SP replaced the odd shaped piece of glass with two separate panes, putting a post in the middle.
The resulting windows are larger than the stock GE windows.
Cotton Belt and some Southern Pacific GE’s also had a rooftop air conditioner that was recessed slightly into the arched roof. Modeling this requires cutting out a section of the roof and replacing it with some sheet styrene.
Dan also shows how he molded the antenna box behind the A/C unit.
Join Dan for some HO scale diesel detailing fun!

Very nice work which should inspire and help all modelers. I look forward to the next installment and to seeing the finished model. I do have one minor tip. It can be helpful to drill a small ‘gluing’ hole behind the KV class light covers to eliminate any trace of adhesive. Even styrene solvent (a neat trick which is often overlooked for bonding metal and/or wood to styrene) can leave a trace. Great series! Please keep it coming.

That's a good idea. I have done stuff like that before a couple times, but not on this model. There will be more in this series. I still have three models to finish! Thanks for watching!

It’s great to see this series come back! I strive to have diesels as detailed as yours! I’m working on SD40R 7303 as well as a Conrail SD50 for a friend. I’ll have to take your tips into consideration when I go back to a project I started about a year ago, SD45T-2R 6842.

Progressing nicely 👍Don't rely on Archer Decals, they folded. Archer made some great decals. They are filling existing orders, but they became swamped as soon as the news broke.

Cool video Dan! I have a pair of undecorated Atlas U36Cs that I plan to turn into fictional leasing units, already have some brass Athearn horns to replace the stock ones on the locomotives. I'd also like to add ditch lights as well. But I'm gonna take my time as you also mentioned with your project, thanks for sharing and the cool tips as well!

Sometimes I have to look back to reviews you've done in the past to agree more (or not) on grades you're giving. For months I tought that you were hard on Rapido Trains stuff. Even if I live in Canada, I own just a few items from them. Specially cars because I don't really trust their engines. And the two I got are old ones. Now I understand better your motives. You give good grades to good stuff no matter the name is. But I would like to know if there are some manufacturers on witch you're not doing reviews ?
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi Жыл бұрын
@@lucgagnon5241 I don't have any manufacturers that I won't review per se, but I do normally buy stuff that suits my own tastes. Also, lately I've been much more focused about buying equipment that makes sense for my 1990s era Donner Pass layout. Kadee, for example, makes some really nice rolling stock but most of it is for an earlier time period so I don't have too much of it. I also tend to like equipment with a lot of detail and accuracy, so I tend to stay away from lower end models that have molded on ladders, etc.

Great work on these. I’m guessing you were the first modeler to have the accurate “used to be” L-window posts in your SP units. I’ve never seen anyone go that far with custom details. I don’t even recall overland putting those in (I know ScaleTrains and Athearn Genesis cover this nowadays but only in recent releases) cool stuff
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi Жыл бұрын
I don't know if I was the first, but it is something that I like to get right. So many SP models have either had the generic standard front window arrangement, or as-built with the full L shaped window. I'm glad that's starting to change. Thanks for watching!

I have an Atlas East Penn railroad B30-7 7874, which is former SP 7874 that I would like to modify in the same fashion to make the model more realistic and better looking. Luckily, this unit does not have the same modifications to the roof, just the windows. Do you think it would be possible to retain the original paint on the model while redoing the cab? Also, what would work for the window glass now that the windows will be larger than stock?
@DanielCortopassi
@DanielCortopassi 23 күн бұрын
If you enlarge the windows very carefully, you can probably do it without repainting the entire model. Since the windows themselves are going to be an odd size, you might need to cut them out of some clear styrene. That's what I'll probably do. I've done it before. It's a little tedious, but I usually cut a piece a little larger than I need, then carefully file and sand the edges down until it fits. The window gasket could be simulated with decals, or maybe with some styrene, though that could be difficult. Thanks for watching!

ScaleCoat Wash Away works well on Atlas, Proto 2000, Athearn and some others. Don't use it on Kato, as it can attack the plastic. For Kato I usually use my hobby media blaster. Thanks for watching!
