Wow! Cant believe I found this on here after over 40 years. I saw this ONCE when i was a kid. Dad & I went to a model railroading meeting type thing and they played this on a movie projector. The 2 scenes i always remembered were the train running into the sink and that last train at the end almost running out of track when it stopped. THANK YOU for posting this😊

2nd Rule of Model Railroading: If even the garage is spoken for, try building a garden railroad. 3rd Rule of Model Railroading: Keep it Simple, Stupid! 4th Rule of Model Railroading: Measure Twice, Cut Once..And have the band-aids handy in case you cut a little too much... 5th Rule of Model Railroading: If you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong. --------- All in all a very funny short!

Mid 2021: I first saw this on Nickelodeon in 1981. Wow! Found it! They really hammered out the details producing this little film. Hobbyists at their best, even without tiny digital cams.

@ MrDisneyfanman: I thought that looked like Ward Kimball. He did other filmed work besides this - and was also a highly revered and loved, long-time animator at Disney's studio. In addition to inspiring Mr. Disney's train, Ward had a large-scale (also live steam) big-enough-to-ride setup in his back yard, and toy trains (Lionel, I think) all over his basement. Quite the train fan

Thank you! I've been looking for this film. I remember seeing it in the 70's, either on KCET or at the California Museum of Science and Industry (California Science Center). - That one with the guy crawling around under the layout trying to avert disaster. Still funny. Ward Kimball and Hans Conried rock!!! McGuffin Speed Stabilizer... Is that like Positive Train Control?

There are a few club layouts that are still like this video, and the 'comedic' effect isn't that far from the reality of running at them. A large overhead 'trench' overlooking a very large layout, nowhere near the trains, like you're in a blimp hovering overhead at a high altitude. Thank goodness DCC and controller technology has changed it so you're closer to the trains...

Here because of the thumbnail. I figured it was an actor playing a character based on Ward Kimball. I didn't expect it to actually be Ward Kimball. Awesome.

The Host of this video is Ward Kimball. From Wikipedia - In addition to the full-size equipment, Kimball was also an avid collector of model trains. Kimball is also credited with helping Walt Disney for the inspiration to install the Disneyland Railroad at Disneyland. Inspiration for the Disneyland Railroad also partly came from Walt's own personal 7 1⁄4 in (184 mm) gauge, live steam backyard Carolwood Pacific Railroad -- also partly built by Ward. Kimball's Grizzly Flats train station!

Ward Kimball's Grizzly Flats Railroad was donated to the Southern California Railroad Museum in Perris, CA . I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting him numerous times. R I P to a creative genius.

Correction: Walt Disneys' live steamer was 7&1/2", i.e.7.5". But most of the rest of the world uses 7&1/4"=7.25" like Britain and Australia. But both are 100% wrong because Real Scale for 1:8 scale is 7&1/16th"inch, i.e. 7.625" inch guage track inside width for 100% accurate museum quality.

That was painfully silly! There was some mighty fine model work in there, though. The last sequence was entertaining- too bad it was so poorly lit though. Too dark that made details impossible to see. Did anybody else recognize John Olson in the closing credits? He was a top-notch modeler back in the 80's along with his buddy, Malcolm Furlow. I wonder what happened to those guys. For a time they were in almost every issue of Model Railroader magazine and they made some "how-to-do-it" videos in conjunction with MR magazine, too. Great stuff that really got my interests going back in the day!

The Dancing Girls segments were filmed partly at The Traveltown Museum in Griffith Park in L.A. close to the Observatory plus the Los Angeles Live Steamers Club 7&1/2" guage outdoor miniature railways to ride, plus often used in movies like "The Jerk" when Steve Martin and Miss Bernadette Peters . Also Beethoven the St Bernard dog movie. Also mini trains are custom built for movies with train wrecks , like Under siege: Dark Territory. And 1979 Supertrain!!
