A shame to hear about Hatton's closing its doors. They had a booth at the Springfield, Massachusetts train show the past few years. As far as I know they were the only UK company to have a presence at a major US train show, and they were always good to talk to.

Yes, Hatton's closing is a great loss, especially for us overseas modelers. As others have said I hope there is a way that the information database they have can be kept available to us all. A bit surprised that you didn't mention the end of the Warley show as part of the news. Cheers!

As a modeler in the U.S., Hattons' trunk service was absolutely invaluable and the vast majority of the UK models, new and used, that I've bought in the last ten years came from there. They will be missed indeed.

Those Hornby RRP prices are just ridiculous, even at the retailers.
@speleokeir
@speleokeir 6 ай бұрын
Agreed, but in reality nobody in their right mind pays RRP and you can get a fair bit off. If you go to Hornby direct you can use promotional codes/vouchers to get discounts, they also do promotional offers to club members from time to time (I got an offer of £50 off if spending £300+ last November AND December £100 off in all), plus if you're a club member you get 15% of what you spent back in reward points that can be taken off your next purchase. On my last purchase the RRP in total was £321 I got £50 off plus a further 5%, so a £63.50 discount, plus my 15% reward points is a further £38.62 off my next purchase. Just over £100 in total. Still not cheap by any means but that's a lot more reasonable.

As an overseas customer the closure of Hatton's really saddens me. I made over 100 purchases from them during the last four years and really got to rely on them. I will miss their friendly and professional service. Wonderful people. Where will I source my UK locos and rolling stock now? Not many retailers are willing to ship abroad. Sam, thank you for commiserating with us Hatton's customers. I wish you well! 😊👍

Hattons was the best for me. Im a Hungarian who wants to model in OO and with British stuff. One interesting thing I’m noticing folks not including in their sharing of Hattons’ news, is the dreaded “B” word. They even mention in their announcement and yet, everybody is ignoring it and even if they do, it’s downplayed. What doesn’t help is there’s an absolute mountain of Continental image models in this country despite the limited market and since leaving the EU, any exports to customers in Europe have become expensive, time consuming and because of that: rare. Even at bargain prices, nobody in Europe is buying from Britain anymore because it’s now such a hassle. My local shop ships more to North America and Oceania than Europe now, and they barely shipped to those locations to begin with! I can only imagine what kind of dent in profits it did to a company the size of Hatton’s. They had good rep globally for good international service and Brexit took a lot of that from them.

I never really understood the push for brexit. Whats the point of breaking away from the eu when being a part of the union helped bolster all nations involved on an economic social and infrastructural basis. I remember growing up as a kid and hearing about all sorts of mega projects in the EU because everyone worked as a team and came together to make genuine improvements on each other’s infrastructure and economic design. As far i knew the EU and subsequently UK as being part of the eu had some of THE strongest economic basis in the world Trade and shipping was kept extremely low in cost and everyone was still getting paid a decent fair. The absolute power house the system used to be It honestly was something to strive for in other places of the world. A first true example of large scale multinational cooperation that aimed to improve the lives of its citizens and provide protection. It wasn’t perfect yes. @@davidwales2624 breaking away from a system that inheritley allowed for far easier shipping of materials and products across multiple borders and bodies of water Would and definitely did. Drive up cost of production for many UK based companies and manufacturers. Now logistics of shipping to the EU from the UK have become vastly more complicated relative to what they used to be. My buddy in Scotland talked to me the other week about how shipping cost shot up for him and his friend in Germany to mail to eachother after brexit. A sudden increase in cost and complications of logistics is exactly one of the main factors that were put forth by hattons for why they are winding down the company. Things got more complicated and cost of materials went up subsequently. That’s exactly the kind of thing brexit caused

Yeah I'm gonna miss Hatton's too..... They seemed to make the effort to make model trains the best they can be and keep costs down. To a certain extent Accurascale has made an impact on the market, Ellis Clarke too. But Hatton's really did try to set standards and went to battle with both Hornby and Bachmann. That was a shame and badly handled.

With their own designs, eg the Genesis coaches, I hope they can realise some value by selling on the IP rights and designs. I did not buy many locos from Hattons, but did like buying some of the 00 scale diecast cars and small vans from them, as they were great prices. I did get my Accurascale Class 37 from them, and have had none of the issues that are going round KZfaq etc. I will miss them, a sad time for the modeling people of all ages. I've been into trains/real and model for almost 50 years, I got my first (electric) train set fro christmas when I was about 8 years old,.. This was from a local model railway shop, sadly closed a long time ago. We have lost a lot of good model shops and specialest model railway shops over the years, I do order online, but the best way to get your items I think is in person at a local (or local ish) shop where you can see what they have, and in some cases see the model run on a test track! You can also ask questions and gain information, and advice. Shame that Hattons are going, I wish their staff all the best for the future.

What worries me the most is that Hattons as one of the top model railway retailers in the Uk with worldwide exports can't see a future anymore in it for themselves. A couple of years ago during the Covid crisis then was a mini boom/revival in the hobby which was reported in several UK national newspapers including the Telegraph and Guardian. This week both of these same newspapers featured articles on the "dying model train hobby as the enthusiasts get ever older". Ironically there has never been so much choice in quality railway models as there is now even if they are generally expensive. I think in the longer term whether in the UK, US or Germany (biggest model railway markets) the challenge is to get new young people into the hobby...

Really enjoying your channel. I think this is the first shakeout not the last in the hobby driven by the endless search for more detailed and specific models, driving up model costs exponentially. Luckily I could afford to buy the latest stuff at the latest prices, but I don’t. I started in the 1990s when Hornby top link in the brown box rivalled Lima in the blue box for which one could run the worse! When production moved to China, there was a spectacular improvement in detail and quality of running. Anything made 2005 to 2015 normally runs great has great detail and at normal viewing distance is indistinguishable from the current super detail stuff. The actual market for, and margins to be made on for example Hornby’s 900 variations of class 5 must be peanuts for them and the retailers. I used Hattons in the uk and internationally for many years. They are a great company but those pushing for endless extra details will rue the day…..sad for Hattons, their friendly staff, and all us modellers. Will Hornby go bust yet again?

Not surprised that Hattons are closing, the madness of the pandemic is what ultimately sealed their fate. I have plenty of disposable income and upto early 2020 was spending well over £200 a month with Hattons, I`ve just been looking at my paypal receipts and found that I have spent £260 with Hattons in the last 4 years. I`ve chosen to run what models I have and not buy anything anymore, it`s too tricky with the way things are now with how the world is. This year for example my car insurance has more than doubled. The pandemic and the on going rising prices have diverted all my disposable income into a cash ISA. I will not be surprised if we hear that Rails of Sheffield are to go the same way, they are punching well above their weight having costly store refurbishment/extension/new show room etc, when customers are not spending like they were before and choosing to be far more cautious with their money.

So here's a question I have for you Sam as someone who is knows a bit more about the industry, now that Hattons is closing, do you have any good recommendations for other places to buy second hand models internationally? As someone always interested in British models and living outside the UK, Hattons now closing does make getting older models seem much more difficult.

Trains4u has a massive 2nd hand selection and can post internationally. They also sell alot of 2nd hand through their ebay store

Does the closure of Hattons also mean we wont ever see another batch of the niw sold out(?) first batch of Genesis coaches? There's going to be a lot of people still hoping to complete their rakes of these coaches very unhappy..

Been thinking - Hattons winding up is why Hornby got back into bed with Rails of Sheffield towards the end of last year: they were likely told earlier than the announcement by Hattons so they knew they were losing their biggest national box shifter and needed to make up the difference

You might find that it was John’s (rails) relationship with Simon k (Hornby) that cause that. Rails chose to drop Hornby over the terrier issue (see the James may doco) Rails coming back lines up nicely with Simon leaving Hornby.

The EFE Southern Bulleid/Raworth electric loco looks good - If I recall aright, Chloe liked the green-liveried version at Warley (?), so I hope that's the one you've chosen... Yes, sad news indeed about Hattons, but I very much hope there will be a re-run of the P 060Ts.

I share the upset with Hattons closing, in fact the way they are doing it demonstrates the honesty and honourable way they conduct themselves. What I can't understand is why the Hattons 'brand' isn't being sold as a business- I haven't seen it advertised? It must be worth considerably more than nothing?

A shame about Hattons. Glad the upcoming batch of 4 and 6 wheel coaches from them are going through for sure, but hope the P class happens. But I do have the Rovex anniversary 7 plank and GWR King class “King Stephen” preordered from The Model Centre.

I’m going to miss HATTON’s, I used to check the new additions every day to see if any new bargains were listed especially their class 66’s as I am trying to get the full set. ☹️

I used to buy locos from Hattons way back in the 1970s and 80s always had good service from them sad to see the end of an era.

The closure of Hattons is a psychological blow and I shall miss them. I had a link to their website in my bookmarks bar and I often used to click on their website when I was not interested in what the family was watching on television! However, I think Hatton's had got beyond themselves moving to Widnes, making their own models and expanding in America. Had they kept their ambitions more modest and stayed just as a model shop in Liverpool, they might have been able to continue trade. Thanks for uploading.

Hey sam! I ordered from hattons mostly because I live in the USA and really like British locomotives and such. Hattons was the only retailer I could find that ships to the USA except for ebay which can get very expensive very fast. Do you recommend or at least know of any? Thanks.
