Welcome the tenth instalment on the construction of the Railway Room and my OO Gauge Somerset & Dorset layout - Lyncombe Vale!
The past few months have been a bit of a challenge to say the least, finding time and motivation to work on the layout has been a bit difficult at times, despite this a number of major milestones have been achieved. My main focus has been on completing the famous Two Tunnels - Devonshire & Combe Down - with the latter complete and ready to be installed onto the layout. Once these two major structure are in position, progress can start in earnest of finishing of the landforms and, finally (all being well), make a start on track laying...
In this update we discuss the recent progress made to the layout, including the completion of the backscene, followed by an update on my growing fleet custom Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway rolling stock, as well as a look at a couple of special new addition to the my Somerset & Dorset Railwayana collection, plus the grand reveal of the layout's name board!

Hi Callum! Nearly missed this update! Just as well I realised as I’ve been waiting for one! 😆 Those tunnel portals really are a work of art mate. And it’s great to see the abutments for the wee bridge get the same level of attention. It is these fine details which really do set yours apart from many other layouts. That backscene will look just fine when you have blended it all in and I look forward to see ing the view under the bridge, which I expect will look as though it goes much deeper once you have done your clever depth tricks 😎 The tunnel design is very clever. Good thing is I guess that you can just box off the bit with the point with a simple cover to keep it dark and tunnel like when you look through it 😃 I only just caught up with the new SDJR stock video too and my goodness you managed to get some handsome vehicles. As much as I love the locos, I must say those PO wagons are absolutely wonderful. In fairness, so is that Jinty! And finally, a blue 88! Hurrah!🤓 That resin plate does look good by the way. Advantage being of course that if you drop it, you won’t dent the floor or break your foot 🤣😂😂 And that tote really will set it all off nicely. Not heard a facia called a skirting board before, but hey, why not? It’s exactly what it does after all 🤷🏻‍♂️😜 Cheers matey, wonderful stuff as ever an really look forward to the next tunnel project in particular 👍🍀🍻

Thanks Tim. Glad you enjoyed the update. I've made a fair bit more progress since on many of the subjection mentioned above. Can't wait to give the SDJR fleet a proper run, when I finally get around to laying the track. Yes, it is indeed a facia board. That was about taken number 40, and I really had lost the will by that point to go back and re-record it. Not sure when the next update will be, got a busy couple of months ahead and I hope to use any free time on the construction

Can’t undo it now! 🤪 Funnily enough though, like I said: that IS actually what it is anyway 😂 As for being busy: in my book that is always a positive! And I am sure we can forgive you for that if it means we have to wait a bit more for the next update 👍🍀

Wow well done Callum your layout is top quality and the wonderful Train clips with superb sound make this lovely to watch . Your Moddeling skills are fantastic.again attention to detail shines through and using soot from the original Tunnels amazing dedication. Many thanks! Hopefully I'll get around to doing a write-up on construction of the the tunnel in a future issue of Railway Modeller magazine. Found a bit more motivation of late, and have manage to to make a bit more progress since filming. Certainly starting to take shape now

Thank Oli! So pleased with how the backscene turned out. Hopefully will look even better when the physical trees are added. The totem really is an ideal fit on the layout. Now too complete the boards so I can mount it.

Marvelous update mate, well done. Don't worry too much I worked pretty much solidly on Thurstable lane, from December till late in Febuary. I've only just gone back in the room after 3 weeks! So I completely undertand why it's those big updates and breaks etc. You need time for you at the end of the day.

Hi there, sadly not. Work and life in general have got in the way of the project on a whole and find the time to work on the layout, yet along record and edit these updates has become very difficult. Maybe one day I'll get back to doing the video on it.

Very good job on the brick work. It is impressive. I do love the SDJR locomotives although I don't own any. They look the part although I tend to buy Midland and LMS. I discovered that the Longmoor Military Railway used Prussian Blue for a while before changing to Oxford Blue as well as olive, black and NATO greens.

I am really pleased you managed to get both 58 and 88. I missed to opportunity of getting 88 a few years ago. I bid on a 58 a couple of years ago but it went for silly money. It is why I joined the collectors club just to get the Johnson 0-4-4 tank in S & D colours.

I imagine you are very pleased with how this is going - I would be. It's only later on in the film that the tiny size of the bridges. The film, and your rather good camera, make it easy to forget how small 00 gauge is!

Hi Brian. Nothing to report I'm afraid, as other commitments have taken over amoung other things. If I do make any progress, the place to check would be via my Instagram page, as there are no plan to film any more updates, due to the amount of time and effort involved.

Hi Thomas, sadly life has got in the way, so for now the layout has been put on the back burner (along with updates) until further notice. I found this update in particular to be very draining and stressful to film and edit (note it was also my last video which I appear on camera). Reset assured I will try my up-most best to put a video together when I feel I can. Once again very sorry

Hi, yes and no. There been a lot going on a late, which has seen me step away from making videos. There has been some work on the layout, though it's very slow going. Currently there are no plans to continue doing these videos, due to the amount of time required to film edit, etc. However, my modelling can be seen in my monthly build articles in Railway Modeller magazine.
