In this episode I revisit the station platforms for my project and show my progress. I go into some detail with the curved platform tops which have required a different technique to that which I have shown previously.
This video will be my last of 2020, and my 35th (I think) since I started uploading seriously.
35 videos in 32 weeks, each of which have been fun to make.

Looking back on your series, which began as a guide to using CAD for model building construction, it amazes me just how far it has come and how it appears to have developed a life of its own. Never a dull moment and a joy to watch. Thank you for posting, and a belated Happy Christmas to you and yours. Stay well.

Great idea with the clay. Might be able to use it in maintenance buildings to put between the rails on the track to mimick hard standing. Also good for yards doing the same thing. Having watched some videos where the inside of the track has been filled in, I don't like card, plasticard, polyfilla etc. Clay would do the job and it doesn't look messy. Your station is looking fab.

I loved the platform surface you created James, it’s certainly given me food for thought as to what I might be able to achieve with my own. Your videos are very informative and inspirational, I look forward to see more of Bexhill in the New Year. So, all the best for the New Year, stay safe and see you in 2021 🥂👌🏻

Hi John, I think it's great stuff, really good for all sorts of things, and the best bit is that it doesn't seem to shrink as it dries. It takes paint really nicely too. Happy New Year to you too, have a good one! James

Happy New Year James -The platforms are a masterpiece and so is the station and I really like the photo at the end that gave a great view of all the little details. As a man who does not consider yourself Arty the scenic work is very good indeed especially the ballasting ( I am envious ) . Looking forward to what comes next . Hi Dan, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a kind comment. I do try to think through what I do, and present my ideas in such a way as they might add something to the collective KZfaq wisdom. But they are just that, ideas, but I do hope they form some food for thought as people mull-over their own projects. I’m really pleased you have been finding the videos interesting, there’s plenty more to come, which I hope you will find interesting too. Thanks for the sub, it’s great to have you onboard. My best wishes, James

The curved platform surface is looking good. Looks like a similar technique to that used by a Swedish KZfaqr i follow called marklinofsweden. He has some fantastic guides to getting realistic finishes. He uses this technique for cobbled streets too, with a cobble roller sold for ho scale. One for oo could work quite well i reckon.

Hey James. Another quality and ducational video. It was my intention to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, but snail mail is particularly bad this year. I will be sending you some relevant info in the next week or so but, as I said ain an earlier email, I am in no rush not yet anyway. Getting used to my new toy and the benefits it has given. So, on that basis, I wish you and yours a celebratory festive season and good health for 2021. Take care, Mike

Hi Simon, this technique would also work with PECO platform sides, and a bit of MDF as a sub-base. I hope the video was useful, and gave you some ideas. Good luck with your platforms when you get started. Thanks for watching, James

I must say I admire you for having the courage to tackle the challenge of modelling a real place! A fascinating look at your technique of modelling a platform surface with DAS clay. I think the final step with the paintbrush had not been necesary. However, when you sand it down, it should create a good worn tarmac effect! The focus stack is an interestnig technique. Perhaps photograph the model in bright sunlight in June to reduce the depth of field and the number of images necessary? Thanks for uploading.

Thank you Allen, in my case the platform tops will be getting a top dressing to represent gravel. I was simply showing the technique asa suggestion for others to whom it might me new. As for my photographs skills, I’m still learning. This project was conceived as a focus for me to practice the skills with. I hope to have many hours learning the processes once it is completed. So all suggestions as to how I might improve are most welcome. I’ll aim for a better daylight set-up in my next shoot. Thanks for the tip. All the best, James
@AllensTrains
@AllensTrains 3 жыл бұрын
@@BexhillWest The f-stop determines the depth of field. In bright sunlight, the f-stop can be f-22, but on a dull day, the iris needs to be open much wider - maybe f8. The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field can be. A pinhole camera has an infinite depth of field without distortion but requires a time exposure which would not be a problem photographing your 4mm version of Bexhill West! See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera#:~:text=A%20pinhole%20camera%20is%20a,as%20the%20camera%20obscura%20effect.

Actually laughed out loud when you said you're "not good at artistic-y things" - you do yourself too little credit! These platforms are absolutely masterful - it's criminal to hide them under a canopy actually. Getting the impression every railway modelling club ought to get access to a laser cutter to make nice things from thin MDF…
@BexhillWest

That is very kind of you to say! But really, I'm not good at artistc-y things....I can paint well and get a great finish where one colour is required, but when it comes to colour theory and mixing colours, I'm afraid I'm hopeless. I'm more of an engineer than an artisan. :)
