In this video I finish off the model road making series with the application of road markings to the road surface. This included a combination of maskings tapes and adhesive label templates with some mixed results. This was then finished off with some weathering using a colour pencil and dry brush technique.

Great stuff. That's exactly what I was looking for, especially the weathering/worn look for the markings.

Great video Julian! Going to try some of these techniques and see which I think is best fit for me. Everyone has different 'thoughts' on what works.

Another great video. Your attention to detail is fantastic and I love that you show your technique warts and all, a proper lesson in how and how not to. Thanks, Roy

Thanks Roy. I think showing less successful procedures is quite good as you've commented. Not only does it give viewers a heads-up to what might not work so well as a technique, but it also gives viewers an opportunity to offer their advice and tips, thus being a 2 way street, pardon the pun.

Interesting technique . . . it would take some experimentation, but some airbrush frisket film might work well for this kind of a project. The material is made of ultra-thin acetate, is impervious to moisture and generally withstands bleed-under. Its low-tack adhesive qualities might necessitate the application of light coats/layers (dabs?) of paint to be on the safe side.

Hi Julian, Another great vlog. Just an update to UK road markings, if you or any viewers requires markings for controlled crossings (with traffic lights) they are now in the new Chapter 6. Therefore search for Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 6 Traffic Control. Hope that helps someone, any questions just shout 👍🏻

Hey Julian, You got there in the end. The final result looks certainly very good and pleasing. Maybe the road could get a bit more dirt and grime, but that is personal preference. I think the label paper is to thick and stiff to actually get it closely sticking to the sand so bleeding would be prevented with the consistency of your used paint. Using a more dry paint like doing with dry-brushing would probably have made a difference. All together thumbs up!

Hi Trev, yes it would seem NZ has a handle on this virus but I'm not going to get too confident yet. Other countries thought they had it in the bag, then came the second wave. I think only time will tell if NZ (and the world) has truly beaten this thing, that and the successful development of a vaccine.

Town scene is coming together nicely Julian The road will definitely need some dirt and weathering added maybe some litter around and about unless of course it’s one of those flash towns that takes pride in its appearance...what was the time line for your railway
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 4 жыл бұрын
I have been progressing further with the street scene in terms of final touches and hope to provide an update this weekend. It's definitely a town that does take some pride but not as extreme as Sandford (Hot Fuzz). The period of Station Road is late 50's to late 60's, but if you mean timeline as in when will the layout be complete, I would have to say never... it's a forever evolving journey.

Really enjoyed it again Julian, your roads are looking good, just how I hope mine will be. Just finished my baseboards now and looking forward to some track planning and even running some trains which I still haven’t done! With the restrictions starting to be lifted I can play golf again which will slow me down a bit and the weather here this week is looking really nice. Take care, Kind Regards John

Great job, very good video however yellow lines and especially zig zags were not used in your period of early '60s.

The period of Station Road spans roughly just over a decade (as mentioned in the channel description/about tab) from the late 1950's through to the early 70's. This is so I can operate a good variety of steam and diesel locomotives. This also means a bit of creative license with infrastructure such as road markings, buildings and other period features.

Another good video, keep them coming. Just one observation, I think if you had less paint on you sponge the bleeding would have been eliminated. The markings would have looked more worn - I don't mean this as a criticism because it's a good idea. Look forward to your next one. Best regards, John.
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree John. I would have applied the paint in much thinner layers, letting it dry between each one, but I did rush it because of the paper label soaking up moisture. Next time I'll give the label a quick spray with clear coat or hairspray to hopefully reduce the absorption.
@JWitchard
@JWitchard 4 жыл бұрын
Another option would be to dry brash the lines with a stiff brush.

I'd say a quick blast of a clear coat, possibly even hair spray, before cutting the template out would help. There's still more road marking to do on SR, so I'll give this a go when the time comes.

I think your main problem is your stenciling technique, once you dip the sponge into the paint, dab it onto a paper towel to remove the excess, almost like dry brushing.
@StationRoadModelRailway
@StationRoadModelRailway 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, I think it was a combination of errors that lead to the inconsistent results. I going to do a test/demo at some point with all manner of techniques in the hope of finding the best method.

Karl is right it's not a matter of sticking the stencil down as most use non adhesive stencils. It's a matter of doing it as you would for dry brushing

What period are you modelling as the zig-zag lines at zebra crossings weren't introduced until 1971? Single yellow lines came in with the 1950s, with double yellow lines in 1958 (trial in London) and nationally from 1960. There were also dashed yellow lines, but these are now no longer used (although in sound places were resurfacing hasn't occurred since the 1980s you can still see their ghostly image). Yellow was only used until the1980s for parking restrictions, all other lines should be white until then. The Traffic Signs Manual is a good source for information, but you need to have the right one for your modelling period. The first version was published in 1965 and coincided with the introduction of the current road signs based on the findings of the Worboys Committee and the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals. Another source for information is legislation.gov.uk which has copies of many if the Acts passed by Parliament. Have you considered using a small DIY roller, the kind used to seal the edges of wallpaper,to secure your templates?

Hi Neil and thank you for your very thorough and informative comments. Station Road is not set to a specific year but over a period time from the late 50's to early 70's, this way I can run a greater selection of locomotives and stock without things looking to out of place too much. I include a brief background on the 'About' tab. It's important to note (as I state in my videos), it's the representation I'm after, not necessarily absolute prototypical accuracy.
