Scenery mystifies a lot of people yet it can be so easy once you learn a few simple steps. The real secret is to build up your scenery in layers of varying color and texture just like Mother Nature does. Come on along as I show you how I layer it up to create a believable pasture just ready for some sheep and cows. Let's get started!

Shakers - I use the larger pill bottles from the pharmacy. One of the positives of having a chronic condition that requires medication. I drill 1/8" or so holes in the cap, partially fill the bottle with the scenery product I want, put on the cap and shake away. Scenic Cement application. I use an old white glue bottle and mix up my mixture of Scenic Cement (1/2 Modge Podge, 1/2 water, some alcohol, whatever) and fill up the old glue bottle then I have a cap and I can easily dribble my "Scenic Cement" wherever I want without having to use a pipette or other similar device. For getting into tight spots I use a large hypodermic.

best thing about scenery, is it can never be wrong. always random. and if you are not quite happy with a spot you can always add a bit more.

Larry, I wanted to pass on to you that I have started my Model Railroad. Now, I am an N Scaler, but your series of "Let's Build A Model Railroad" has been very helpful to me. I have gone back to many of your previous presentations, and followed what you were doing. I started out building without any previous knowledge, so what you are doing has a lot of application for me and I have implemented these into my construction. There are times I have to scale down to make it appropriate for N Scale, but you have been a big help. Thank you, and please keep up the good work. Thanks.

Another nice video! Your step by step approach is very helpful, especially to those who might have never attempted the very textured type of scenery that you created with a few patient steps. Thanks for another great video.

Thanks for a really great video. I am new at modeling and was wondering if you allow the first layer of scenery material to dry before soaking the area with isopropyl alcohol? I am asking because I get “craters”. How does one fix the craters?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Generally I would but didn’t have time this week so managed with it tacky. After the base layer you can just lay it on wet for subsequent additions of other materials. I also switched from dribbling alcohol and glue to spraying it when I went to locking in the scattered sections. You need to really thin the Mod Podge to get it to go through a spray bottle and not clog, plus it takes a couple days to dry especially when it is as humid as it has been here.

@@TheDCCGuy Yes thanks for that Larry, I was wondering the same thing. I've been following your videos for some months now and althouigh I've been a Railway Modeller all my life I always learn something new from you, whether it's DCC or now a new build. I'm in the UK so I find it good to hear different ideas from the US. Keep it coming and Happy New Year. Phil in Peacehaven Sussex UK.

Sorry if I've missed it, but have re-watched the first 10 minutes or so trying to determine what modge podge you use (it comes in gloss and matte)and if it's diluted. Didn;t see that you described. Thanks!
@TheDCCGuy

Always use matte for scenery unless you want glossy grass and ballast.

Larry-- The glue you're using in the eye dropper, is that just while glue like Elmers, or is that the Modge Podge, and what is your glue/water ratio? Thanks for the great videos!
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 жыл бұрын
That is Mod Podge in about a 1:1 ratio but plain old PVA will work too. I find that the thinner “glue” infiltrates better and still does the job. For spraying it you may have to thin more depending on how small the spray head opening is. Always clean glue out of everything after each use as it will permanently clog if you don’t.

@TheDCCGuy

Yes, I have the fence posts lined up in a painting jig right now, and will do them this week. However, I need a few more posts to do the entire area-another order on hold.

Hi Larry - A word of caution. Do not put cattle and sheep in the same field. Not realistic. Sheep eat the grass closer to the ground so the cattle can't graze after the sheep has been there. Love your clips!!!! Just worried about putting Decoders in N-Scale steamers, like a 0-6-0 with a slope back tender or a K-4 Pacific. Happy New Year!!!!
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 жыл бұрын
My grandfather grazed sheep and cattle on the same pasture for decades and never had any problems. Last year I put a Tsunami2 sound decoder, speaker, and keep alive in a B&O 4-6-2 tender so I know it is possible.
