It was good to see inside that loco, it brought back many memories. I had my first loco bought for me in about 1957 and the motor was exactly the same pattern as the one you oiled.

Exposed gears are always a recipe for dirt entering the mechanism. I never understood why some manufacturers did that. Even if a loco is to be run on a layout, it would still catch all sorts of debris and dust and stick it to the exposed greasy gears, let alone if driven on carpets or alike.

Hi Sam. I purchased a DCC set before Christmas as I had one as a child. It originally went around the tree but it has since grown with a shunting yard and I've watched many of your videos in the last few weeks. My GWR 2721 developed a squeak and I used a fairly premium TF2 lube I use on my bikes but I fear I've caused the motor to short circuit. I don't really have any other way of testing whether it's the train or a software problem as I only have one engine right now. What do I do now?
@SamsTrains5 жыл бұрын
Hey Giles, really sorry to hear about your problem. The only way to know is to remove the decoder, and then power the motor directly (you could use a 9v battery, if you can access the motor contacts). If oil gets to the commutator of a motor, it can cause it to fail - the process can be reversed with a thorough clean, but it's not always easy with modern motors. You could always try returning the model for a replacement, since it's not very old! Otherwise, be sure to use tiny amounts of oil, and use light machine oil (the Hemline stuff is good)! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@Nialletto8 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam. I've been enjoying your videos. I'm finally going to have the space to have a proper layout again, which means getting my locos out and giving them a service (and maybe converting to DCC). Hi Sam, one quick question: In terms of the wheel axles within an engines chassis, what should you use as a proper grease if it was previously removed by ones younger and curious to take things apart self?
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks very much for the comment! I've used sewing machine oil (hemline brand) for many years - and I find that works perfectly if used little & often - two blobs on each axle every 6 months keeps them running perfect! All the best, Sam :)

how do you lubricate the gwr class 3700. you even said it was special in the wheel chasis and i dont know how to clean it
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gabriel, you'll want to carefully remove the body to lubricate that one! Alternatively, if it's not too bad, you can just remove the base plate (base screws) from the loco, and lubricate the axles and gears! Be very careful of the pick-ups, and give them a really gentle wipe down while you're at it! If you like, get an adult to give you a hand, just so you don't break anything!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

thanks for the video o have 2 questions of i may. numerou uno If you can't get the oil on the wheel due to it not being conductive then dose that not mean you can't put it on the engin. and 2. what are your thorts o using contact spray to clean the engin. electrical contact cleaner that is.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
No problem! No you can oil them, but you just need to keep the oil away from anywhere that makes electrical contact. You can oil the axles though, because the contact area is so large, that a few drops of oil don't spoil the connection. Yeah that sounds good - just be mindful of using anything corrosive, especially near bodywork, and make sure it's not too rough on delicate parts such as the commutator! All the best, Sam :)

I see that yer magnet is held on by a screw going down through the center. If you want a really good running loco, replace that magnet with a neodymium rare earth magnets. This will enable the loco to travel at a much slower speed and will decrease the amount of amps the motor will draw. I've done this for all my open face motors and it has really helped a poor running loco.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
That's true, but the neodymium generate excess wear on the armature due to their strength, which is known to damage motors more quickly in the long run! My solution is to remagnetise the old magnets using a remagnetiser device - this greatly improves performance without overstressing the bearings! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

@SamsTrains2 жыл бұрын
You can use grease rather than oil, it does last longer! You just must use grease that’s plastic safe - so petroleum grease is out unfortunately. And you want a very thin grease, otherwise you generate even more friction. I prefer oil as it doesn’t leave parts sticky, so they don’t attract as much dust and dirt!

@SamsTrains3 жыл бұрын
