I like the way you organize the final components (steps, railings, spindles) first. Then building the support structure. That is opposite the way things are built, but the best way to design. Thanks for the insight!

Lol - I almost left the part in the video where I said that I was sure a bunch of people would tell me that something was wrong with the deck framing and that I was trying to demo principles, but I cut it out - should have left it in - ;p

Great Video Justin!! Can you please make a video tutorial on how to properly prepare models for 3d printing?? Cause these have to be "waterproof" without any holes and it takes pretty long time to fix something with the conventional methods when there are mistakes and errors. Thank you a lot, Greetings from Copenhagen!! :)

You ran your joists the wrong direction 😅 Also, the standard is 16 inches on center (not 12), but because of the way you ran your joists, you’d need an entire joists for each piece of decking to prevent people from falling through the deck. Finally, 2x8 is okay, but generally decks are both framed and decked with 2x6. Great video!
@anthonyrandazzo8836
@anthonyrandazzo8836 Жыл бұрын
12” centers are standard for vinyl and other non-wooden deck material. As far as framing members, you should check a framing table to see the size of dimensional lumber you need. It depends on spans and loads and other variables.

Something other than importing the image and tracing it to create the shape? I'm not really aware of anything quite like that - I think I saw a paid TIF to SKP program somewhere, but I can't remember much about it

For decking boards, I would always fillet the edges. They render much more like boards and not extruded metal.

@Thesketchupessentials

I don't understand what you're asking exactly, but probably you'd model your boards, then draw a plane at the angle that you'd like to cut then and intersect it with your boards, then erase out the extra geometry

Good video quality. You need to check a few framing techniques and some dimensions. Lumber is general *5/8 not a quarter or half (e.g. a 2x8 is actually 7 5/8" x 1 5/8") Also, the Decking runs perpendicular to the Joists or they would have no support. What you were calling the Joist originally was Facia which can clean up the edges of the decking and joists very will. NOTE: you might try raising the Facia level with the Decking. Good luck.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials 4 жыл бұрын
Sigh...probably 50% of the comments below talk about the way the framing is going as well...the intention of the video is to show you how to use the 3D software to model whatever you'd like - I would hope that anyone looking to actually BUILD a deck is going to a much more knowledgeable source

Jack, contractor here. You’re actually totally incorrect about your lumber sizing. After a 2x4 (1.5x3.5) and 2x6 (1.5”x5.5”) they move to 1/4” dimensions as correctly noted in the video. 2x8, (1.5x7.25), 2x10 (1.5x9.25), and 2x12 (1.5x11.25). And what you’re referring to as facia is actually a band. Facia is the trim around the roof. The deck band is the exterior of the deck banding that you see. It’s usually also a structural element of the deck framing. You have your terms and sizing all mixed up.

I do like this and your other videos. However, So Glad you’re getting beat up on your construction techniques. I get a feared if you don’t know simple framing, what else is screwy? 😉 Just bustn’ your Ass 😅 On a serious not, related, repeating studs with joists attached, How to create a group or component with 2 separate members that are attached perpendicular at their ends, and then lengths adjustable?
