There is definitely an art to making realistic model trees, and it doesn’t have to be hard or expensive.
In this tutorial I’ll demonstrate a very easy, cheap and effective way of modelling pine trees, I say easy and it truly is!
Search for Foxtail Fern on Google and you will get all the info you need, you can also search for it on eBay and buy Foxtail Fern seeds, that way you can grow all the trees you need right in your backyard!
You will be amazed at how realistic these model trees look and they will be a great compliment to your model railroad or model diorama. They will also work well for other applications as well such as war gaming and architectural modelling.
So sit back and watch as I show you how I make pine trees and get inspired to fill your layout with great looking realistic pine trees! HO scale, N scale, OO scale, it works for almost all scales!
For more information and tutorials check out:

I have more videos and written tutorials there for you to check out.
Cheers
Luke

Yeah unfortunately I had a copyright claim on some of the music towards the end, I couldn't remember where I downloaded the track so I removed the music although I didn't realize it removed the voice over as well... I eventually tracked down the song and found my license to use it however the changes can't be reversed unless I completely re-upload the video! I only ever have trouble with AudioBlocks music being claimed for copyright issues even though I have the correct license! Hence the reason I haven't used any music from Audio Blocks for the past two years and I always tell people who are looking for music to stay well away from Audio Blocks! Epidemic Sound is who I use now along with Premium Beat!

I really like the way these come out as narrow as they do. Most commercial trees are far more triangular than the real thing. My holy grail is to find a commercially made piece of faux bush/fern/flower that can be converted into trees with the method you use here, so that I don't have to rely on dried, brittle natural products which may look good but are vulnerable to errant elbows.
@BoulderCreekRailroad
@BoulderCreekRailroad 8 жыл бұрын
+carmium yeah I'd like the same thing, these are very brittle! I considered buying commercial pine trees and using an electric shaver to trim them to a more believable shape? Cheers Luke

I have had them on my layout for over 20 years. Only thing I have done with them is to lightly airbrush the green foliage material as it was getting a little faded looking against the latest ones I have made. People who have them growing seem willing to allow you to harvest the dead ones. They can be straightened by applying bending pressure with your fingers to stress the Trunk fibres to the desired shape.

great video Luke, the only thing is for evergreen trees in the western USA, a coat of reddish color like burnt umber on the trunk would really make these "pop" thanks so much for sharing, Chuck

***** Great idea Chuck, a lot of the local pine trees near me are quite light in color, that is a fantastic idea though! I'll have to give it a try with some different colors, as I am modelling the great northern, I'll probably have to do as you suggest. Cheers Luke.

Luke, Outstanding presentation! ...and to think I had the perfect armature for the pines and fur trees on my layout. I've been collecting the dry stems of Echium flowers. I never thought to clip these things early and dry them out on a rack like yours. Brilliant! I've always waited for nature to do that. Your version with the Asparagus Fern renders a much more dense array of branches in HO scale than the Echium. However, the Echium would be good for folks modeling in larger scales, which is why I brought this up. I can't wait to go out and harvest new trees. Some of our neighbors have this form of Asparagus Fern growing in their yards. I'm sure they won't mind me helping with "trimming them back" a bit!
@BoulderCreekRailroad
@BoulderCreekRailroad 8 жыл бұрын
+Randall Hawkinson lol, I'm sure they won't mind. It needs to be pruned quite regularly anyway so you'll only be doing them a favor. I hope you get great results with the Echium flowers, I've not seen them before but they look like they will do a good job. Cheers Luke

+Luke Towan Try hairspray instead of the glue. I use the "Rave" brand: $1.98 for a big can at Walmart. It doesn't make such a mess and it sets up really solid after a couple of hours.
