I'm following you since the very beginning of River road. You certainly have my interest for all you're doing especially the weathering. Tamiya is probaby the best water base paint and I like the way you're using it in everything even on grass . This is the most beautiful layout I've ever seen. And I saw numbers of them. Keep on your good work. The only thing bad for me is that you've putted very big trees in front of that large and wonderful building. I would like to see more of it if I was you.

Thank you for the compliment. Yes indeed - Tamiya is great paint and I am certainly addicted to it. I also like using other water base paints along with it as well. I understand what you mean about the building behind the trees, but I would loose thee "cool" factor of the shadowed alley-way feel if I did when viewing the layout at track level - which I will show in the next video - 😉

Boomer, you are a GREAT composer. You can envision the scene in your head even before you compose the scene on your layout. You are comparable to other great artists, like Mozart, whose compositions were viewed as him simply taking dictation from his mind. Wonderfully done!! You have a talent that is noteworthy. CHEERS!

Some of best work. Thank you for the detailed videos. So many folks look on trees as tedium and not as models. If there's one thing I've learned from you it's that everything is a model! Thanks Boomer, the biggest takeaway for me in this series was that everything gets a paint treatment . All too often we look for materials and textures that are pre colored to our needs, but, if as you, we paint them to our desired color palette, then only the texture is relevant. Heck you can make the tree from red flock and blue foam, its the paint that brings it all together. Looking at your previous videos of your sand bank and rocky beach, it comes to light that everything is painted to make the scene homogenous.

At times it looks like you're using a controlled wing it method. By that I mean using your knowledge base to fantasize an outcome. But then you throw in a scene where the pictures are so vivid and we know you are using your own creativity, but being true to the prototype. So amazing.

Those trees are very real... Years ago I had quite a few Bonsai. Training those trees required the same "eye" you use building trees and other scenery. Each of us modelers should study nature a bit better. Thanks for your teaching Boomer.

Absolutely amazing! the mobility of the finished trees is remarkable. The realism of the rocky ledge next to Axton is truly awesome, and there may be a mountain lion lurking in the underbrush. LOL. Very nice work indeed!👍

It is so strange that most model railroads have such small trees scale-wise. Here in Australia, we have Mountain Ash that can grow to 90m or about 300 feet yet I've never seen a tree that would be more than around 40ft in scale size on a layout. Your work is exemplary and your videos give such a clear demonstration of how to achieve great results. Please continue to show us all your methods.

I think "small" trees have always been in the collective conscience of mainstream "consumer" model railroading. RTR products can often dictate trends for economic reasons, especially for those who don't want to actually model a railroad and the associated right-of-way in scale. Wow I almost wished I was modelling your neck of the woods instead of a German landscape. But then again I would probably not do such a wonderful job of these magnificent trees. I do no comment every videos (but gives always a thumb up) because I would run out of extraordinary and marvellous adjectives. You are a master, but you knew that. I have plenty of alpine trees to model and will apply your teaching to them.

Yet again a new masterclass. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Boomer! Have you considered to paint your backdrop at some point? Of course, your scene could be a small hill with not trees behind, but what the eye and the mind would expect are a few other trees that would extend this forest. Of course, I'm not telling you what to do: I'm just asking your opinion regarding backdrops. ;)

Absolutely agree on the 3m disadvantage, it’s a contact glue which when it comes in contact with water, it will saponify. Totally switched to matte medium.

All the spray glue is like that. It dries out and the tree falls apart after a few years.

Boomer, have you thought about doing Ball Cypress trees? These are found in marsh, swamp or back water areas. They grow to to be large trees with flared out base and foliage that hangs down. Would love to see how you would go about creating one.

Great and very explanatory tutorial even for those that have built some trees in the past. I 've noticed in several of your videos regarding the texture on limps, roots or branches that you use only stem wire if you 're goin' to cover it with fiber paste, instead of just simple wire. Does the fiber paste has a problem of bonding and staying on naked wires? Is this the reason that you cover the wires with sawdust instead of fiber paste? There are some products that "prime" the wires so the paint adheres better , like the Mr Hobby metal primer liquid medium.

So it would seem Langley and the Southern of BC are your own stomping grounds? I've enjoyed several of your videos and admire the work very much. I only wish I had had the time to make trees like yours when I was making models commercially (I retired recently), but people can't pay for hundreds of trees done to such a beautiful standard! More's the pity, as they used to say. Anyway, from another who did models and props all her working life, my thanks and appreciation for sharing your skills with us.

The point of modeling "feature" trees like this is you only need a few, not hundreds. Count how many are on the layout. No more than a dozen or so. The rest are fillers. A well modelled tree has the power of ten. ;-)

Unfortunately, my final diorama job required scores of trees, and as much fun as it would have been to sculpt a few standouts, these were viewed from all sides and there weren't any good candidates. Or the budget. Or time. If I find a way to built something for myself before I get too old, I'll be watching all your vids for advice!

@@carmium They do require labor for sure. When I built a large display for a museum many years ago, I was able to hire half a dozen people to make trees, otherwise it would have been a no-go.

I agree.. the wire and static grass are the best. I seen this older dude make trees that way about 2-3 years ago and knew that was the way. I gotta get some of that fiber paste. I use various things but nothing looks that good. Do you run your sawdust through the mini blend?

I just use whatever sawdust is available. Finer seems to be good, but coarse has a place as well.

Quick question, I may have missed it, how fine of sawdust do you use? I have access to sawdust but its a bit larger Than what appears you use. Do you put it through blender or just use fine sawdust from sander/saw?

Try sifting the coarser sawdust through a flour sifter from the dollar store. ;-)

Hello Boomer when the tree is finished you spray with the aribrush as final finish diluted matte medium. What is de ratio water:matte medium for the airbrush. Thanks and cheers, enjoy the weekend Ronald

It depends on your airbrush. I start with 50/50 and thin it down from there if I have to and make sure you flush the airbrush immediately after use or immerse in IPA.

I'm a rookie, but can you recommend a good pin vise drill brand or type. I see many 8 to 20$ amazon listings, but know from experience the right tool of very good quality always makes a big difference. Please..

I try and buy the best quality and be done with it. In most cases this works. Most of my tools I purchased over thirty years ago and I will never have to replace them, unless I loose them God forbid. Funny you mention "pin - vise." I'm in the market for a new one as well. The one I was looking at by God-Hand is 60.00 bucks - ouch! But it fits the Drill bits I have already and it is of excellent quality. I buy that and I'm done for sure.😁

Hey Boomer - what brand of raw umber do you use? I haven’t seen raw umber in Tamiya.

Just mix Tamiya 50% Flat Black Acrylic (XF-1) with Tamiya 50% Linoleum Deck Brown Acrylic (XF-79) and you have "Raw Umber." Shake it up and then thin it to taste - very thin. 😁

It's a # 6 "Oil Paint" fan brush from the Craft store. Or get one from an art supply store. Just look for a coarse fan brush. They have different sizes as well.
