I’m a bit late to comment but thank you for sharing your thoughts on Ruben’s techniques for these rather quick sketch brush drawings. His brilliance really shows through in these amazing works.

Thank you so much Luis! It's very rare to see people introduce this gold technique now days. I'm very interested in old master technique especially Rubens, seem you the only one video I found explained very details about the technique. I don't know how much I repeated this video over and over again to understand Flemish painting. It's really help me to understand more deep in Flemish, as my little knowledge about old masters also it's hard for me to study more deeply about their technique because my extreme limited resources in my area.

Thank you for explaining the concept of painting a sketch, I knew about it but did not fully understand its significance, how it works, and can be applied. Plus, it opens a whole new appreciation of Rubens.

Excellent tutorial. I always learn a lot from your videos. The advice about mixing the chalk in a way to avoid air bubbles was great.

So delighted to discover you and your channel! I love that you cover the "science" in art. Beautifully done. I have sought Rubens technical materials, I use Maroger medium. There is also a man, David Fell, who developed a series of 3 mediums that set up differently to allow a large painting to build over a matter of a few days and keep that wet in wet look in brushwork. But they never go into the foundation as you have, for the luminosity.

I heard that Rubens’ modelli paintings were made with distemper underpaintings on traditional gesso panel. Do you know what Rubens used to seal his distemper painting to allow oil to be applied on top? (I assume he used some kind of varnish.)
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist 7 ай бұрын
Scientists have published reconstructions and they theorize that Rubens used either linseed oil or a lean Egg/oil emulsion. For my demo, I used just linseed oil to seal the chalk glue panel.

@@LuisBorreroVisualArtist There is an article on the natural pigments website titled: Working In Rubens' Painting Technique, by Kenneth Freed This article discusses the potential use of distemper in Rubens’ modelli. I have recently been experimenting with painting on gesso panels made with chalk and animal skin glue. A teacher of mine recommended to seal the panels with additional layers of animal skin glue, but I have been having trouble with it still being too absorbent. Do you find the panel to be ready to paint on the next day if you seal it with linseed oil?
@josejunior7531
@josejunior7531 3 жыл бұрын
Please, ask me a question: to make the sketch on panel should I use the paint diluted in solvent or paint together with linseed oil?
@LuisBorreroVisualArtist

Hello Jose: Thank you for commenting. The best method is to use Spike oil of Lavender to dilute your paint.

@@LuisBorreroVisualArtist Oh, right! I have to say that I am fascinated by Rubens's sketches and my big goal is to be able to make paintings similar to him, and finding this video was a great joy, because I finally am learning. God willing, I will make religious paintings as beautiful as Rubens. Thank you so much for your generosity in publishing this free content, God reward you!

@@LuisBorreroVisualArtist I just discovered your content last night, it's brilliant, do you have anything on the techniques of Titian? or anything in depth about glazing. I have spent years doing alla prima and the paintings just aren't luminous as what the old masters were able to achieve. Thanks!
