A few comments: 1. You don't really want to clean up the edges of your layers. They're naturally pretty rough in actual rock. 2. You really want more variation in your colors. Sedimentary rock tends to have many different colors in close proximity, but the colors can be subtle variations rather than stark stripes. 3. You should try for much more variation in layer thickness. Old sea bottoms laid their sediments down in uneven depths, sometimes very thin and sometimes thick. 4. On a related note, layers definitely do not need to be horizontal. Layers tilt as the underlying land forms rise and fall. Further, different layers are often at different angles, from varying sedimentation, petrified wind-blown sand, faulting, or whatever. 5. Lichens and desert varnish are both very common in many places, either of which can give you a nice color variation. For example photos, I'd recommend image searches for Colorado National Monument, Zion National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Red Canyon Utah... pretty much any state or national park in the desert SW of the US. And as a bonus for very odd rock formations indeed, take a look at photos of Goblin Valley State Park in Utah, USA.

Thanks for this series. I wanted to try and do this but didn't know how to go at it. Well now I do! Thanks Terrain Terror for showing me / those of us who Didn't know how to do exactly how to paint a Stratified Rock formation! I want to show this on my layout based on the Stratified Rocks in the Grand Canyon that shows how the Water has depleted and caused Stratification lines as the water over the years has Evaporated.

Mel, seems like you had a lot of hungry bacon lovers watching this one! So funny! Living in the South West United States, I have seen these kinds of rocks. Especially in parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Thanks. I would love to see some ice and snow covered rocks.

In mountainous terrain rock layers are folded and at every angle but horizontal. Mountains are made by folding and pushing up these layers which makes for very interesting forms. Gray and green are common colors/.

Hey again Mel an all here. Nice tips cheers Iv got a bit of a cheeky question for u. Iv recently tried to sell a ruined castle tower I spent ages building and painting. Probably a weeks worth of work. Put it on eBay at 99p start an the final bid was 8.50 after 250 views and 30 watchers!!! Was pretty disappointed. Do you have any tips or advice on how to sell the things we make? If not I understand and sorry for the cheek!

For the ebay market, you've gotta build quick and keep your material costs down, its rare to get a decent return on work you've put a lot of time into on ebay
