Built Using ONLY Humbrol Products? Airfix Me410A-1/U2 & U4 Model Kit in 1/72 Scale - Build & Review

Airfix made a surprise model kit release in the last few months of 2023 with the Messerschmitt Me410A-1/U2 & U4 in 1/72 scale. The Me410 was the successor to the earlier Bf110 and would see service with the Luftwaffe during the latter part of the Second World War.
Much like the real Me410 being an improvement on earlier types - it would seem that the Airfix model is also featuring some new improvements!
Join me on the workbench in this video as I build and review this 2023 tooling of the Messerschmitt Me410A-1/U2 & U4 plastic model kit (A04066) in 1/72 scale from Airfix. But this time, with a slight twist! Where I build the model using exclusively Humbrol painting and weathering products!

Hi Matt, I'm sorry but this is not the result someone should get after over 20 years of modeling. I don't understand most of the comments left here, whether these people know nothing of modeling or they are just being charitable. You put yourself out there, review kits and products, do build videos as if you were an accomplished modeller. Your builds are messy, paint jobs ,like this one are horrible, you don't fill and sand your seams, canopies are messy etc... If you are going to present your work on a public platform, at the very least, attempt to improve your skills. I don't enjoy saying these things because you really look like a nice person. All I'm saying is that an effort needs to be made to improve skills if not just for yourself, but for your viewers who may be beginners so that they have something to aspire to and to be encouraged to improve their skills and final results. Harsh criticism I know, but it is meant to be constructive.

Interesting thoughts, but as a counter, I don’t believe our hobby should always be about “doing the best that we can”. I’m not here to show off, I’m here to enjoy the hobby and to encourage others to enjoy it too. You talk of improving my skills, so maybe comparing this video to my first build video to see if there is any improvement there? Growth happens at different rates and just because I’m in a public space doesn’t mean I have to edit and polish everything within an inch of its life. I think it’s more relatable to just be realistic and encourage people through my enthusiasm and enjoyment of the hobby than being a good modeller

@@ModelMinutes Yes, growth happens at different rates, and I have seen earlier videos, and I do not see improvement. I'm not suggesting being perfect or anything close to that as everyone is different and some have little to no artistic skill and will never be able to make as realistic a model as someone who does. I am also not suggesting you are showing off as I do not get that from you at all. What I am suggesting for the benefit of beginners watching your videos is to apply basic modeling techniques such as filling and sanding unsightly seam lines. This alone will improve the look of the model greatly. The paint job on this particular model is the result of old paint that is beyond being salvaged or your pressure is too high causing the paint to dry in mid air creating the grainy finish. If you are building for yourself and the model will not be shown to a wide audience and your ok with that quality of a result, more power to you. But I think as a youtuber you do bear some responsibility to present models that will inspire beginners to eventually acheive results they will be proud of, increasing their enjoyment of the hobby.

@@michaellemaire5380 You want me to improve, that's good - I always try to improve over time. I think that since I started in 2016 I have improved over the 400+ videos I have made (and many of them actually show the exact techniques you claim I never do). But if you don't think I have improved, that is your opinion. KZfaq is a free platform where anyone can upload videos and I have gained my small following by being honest, realistic and relatable in my modelling experiences. I never pretend to be a "modelling guru" and am quite aware of many of the shortcomings with my skills. If I could devote more time to this hobby (and that is what it is - a hobby) then I would. But sadly creating these models and videos (which can take weeks - especially when I have to do them around work, family and other commitments) is a rather time consuming activity. Perhaps I could inspire you to upload your own videos which addresses the areas that I seem to lack in, so that you may be able to cover these shortcomings and ensure that we collectively don't allow any new members to drop out of the hobby?

@@ModelMinutes That's exactly why I wouldn't upload videos. It would take time away from actual modeling and the hobby would become a chore. I prefer to do it locally one on one. The fact that I don't upload does not render my comments or opinions invalid. We all criticize everything from politicians, actors, athletes, people in the service industry etc, etc.. WeI agree that youtube is a public platform and it's a two way street where you will receive comments that you may not agree with.

Have to say I love this idea. I’m probably a very weird person when it comes to models. I almost exclusively like to follow the exact instructions and therefore follow the colours that are indicated (I will modify occasionally out of necessity or if there’s a clear omission or mistake). And since I’m a bit of an Airfix fanboy, I blame my dad, he had a bunch of Airfix and Humbrol paints, which got me started I therefore continued in his footsteps and used his humbrol paints. These were of course being old school were enamels and therefore I’ve continued to use humbrol enamels ever since. I have dabbled a bit in acrylics due to availability but they are the humbrol ones so I can use the ‘correct’ numbers. Still using some of his paints from 40 years ago, amazing how well they have held up. I am also a brush painter (no desire or room to try airbrush) I have to say, while enamels can be smelly and harder to clean, due to the slow drying time then do generally leave a smooth finish. Haven’t seen the video yet and I’m guessing that it’s mostly acrylics you’re going to use but looking forward to see how you get on with a full humbrol build.

I don't think its weird to follow the instructions - after all, we aren't all experts on every type of thing that we build so usually the instructions can be a basis for further improvements if we want to make them

Hi Matt from Model Minutes. Nice vid, nice build. Enjoyed the video, enjoyed the comments more, though. The bloke that wants perfection is relatively amusing: “Doesn’t look like 20 years experience”, “fill yer cracks”. Yup. One on youtube, every minute. Why I like this channel is this: “it’s fun watching someone else do a build”. Finding the time to do a build is a challenge these days. Living vicariously is a thing, eh? I have been making airfix kits since they came in poly bags with a cardboard hang tag stapled on the top of the bag. From the newsagents, next to the chip shop. And those Sunday afternoon builds probably looked horrid. But they were fun. Every few years I make a model, been doing it over many decades. I have fun, am pleased with my results and have no expectations that I’m winning an award. Isn’t that what most of us are doing? Having fun. I like making stuff. Even youtubes. Can’t be fussed if someone thinks it’s not good enough. They can go and make a video and show us what they can do. Mostly the people that slag off stuff don’t though, so you wonder why they bother. I make my vids to help others learn how to do something they might not know how to do. Having a go is what it’s about. The only way for most of us to never mess anything up is to never try anything new. This isn’t a kit I’d build so it’s fun to watch someone tackle it. Anyway, thanks for the vid! I’m off to make an Airfix 1/72 Spitfire now. Skill level 1. It will be a blast, might even make a video for whatshisname to make “constructive comments” on.

Nothing wrong with humbrol seriously. I moved onto their acrylics last year and they thin perfectly with tamiya x20a. I only brush paint. Several coats to get a nice finish and their RLM range is very good too. The only others i use occasionally are AK.

I've had a lot of positive experiences with Humbrol, but also some pretty bad ones. I'm sure that when you watch this video later when it premieres you will see a bit of a spectrum in this video

I'm a Humbrol Enamel user, some of my stock is approaching 50 years or older, and is still in good order - it's just a case of giving them a thorough mix (five minutes!), and the appropriate thinning. Acrylics are the work of the Devil. I did once build and paint with a brush, the vintage airfix Series 1 MkIX Spitfire, following the kit colour scheme, using tube cement and vintage Airfix paint. Came out great for what it was. Very nostalgic.

That is one awesome looking model of the Me-410. You did a great job on the mottled camouflage on the tail of the aircraft. Also, I am glad the poly cement worked for you while gluing that canopy. I do not know if you have attempted this before, but try using Tamiya Extra Thin Cement the next time. It really works well with gluing the clear parts. I have used it on most of my clear parts and have had no issues. Anyway, great build video on only making a model using only one manufactures products. Keep up the great work!

I have used TET on canopies on other builds, but i find that if they have masking tape on them then sometimes the cement will run under the tape and can cause issues on the parts there - so only really best done to glue the canopy in without masking it first (which makes the masking process more difficult). Sadly TET was not an option in this Humbrol-only build, if only they made a thinner version of their current cement

Frankly, I get a bit hacked off with impossible standards. It's a hobby we do because we enjoy it. If you want there are many, many channels that 'buff rivets and rewire the unseen interiors'. This channel does lots of interesting stuff without going over the top. It's nice to see a model being built and thinking, yes I'd like to have a go at that... without thinking, I could never achieve that so why embarras myself. Matt enjoys what he does otherwise he wouldn't do it. This is just my opinion of course. Feel free to engage is friendly debate. Finally, older paints and some not even designed for airbrushing benefit from being put through a mesh to get the lumps out. Filter cups on the net.

Definitely a more detailed kit, but I have memories of the ancient 1/72 Matchbox Me410A2/U4 just falling together. The wheels, gun barrels, radiators and cockpit were pretty spartan, and the canopy was pretty thick... But the kit looked like a Me410 when it was done. The one thing the Matchbox kit did better, IMHO, was the spinners. And despite being a little thick, the decals went down great. My release incidentally, included the hakenkreus for the tail. Completes the look (for historic effect). Back in the day, I only had access to Humbrol paints and tube glue, and careful hand painting of canopy framing was the norm, as you would no doubt remember! I wish this kit was around back then. I will admit to loving Matchbox's 2 and 3 coloured kits back then, but not so much now. I built lots of Airfix and Revell kits too, but Monogram, and later on, Hasegawa, were the bees knees! Then Tamiya! But they were out of my price range... Looks like Airfix has come a long way from those days. Thanks for the review!

I think that originally i was planning on using Vallejo model air as I have a couple of different luftwaffe paint colour sets from them - and it would probably have resulted in much smoother camo paintwork - probably the paints I will use on my next German aircraft

I think that whilst Humbrol might not necessarily be as "easy to use" straight from the start when compared to other brands, when you have figured them out you can get pretty good results

Enjoyed watching the build - a good, honest outcome that probably reflects what most of us end up with (not the super premium league of some KZfaq builders). Also my uncle was a Humbrol salesman back in the 70s so as a kid I had an amazing collection of little tins of their enamel paint 😀 I now live in USA and sadly humbrol a rarity to find in stores.

You might try adding Tamiya gloss varnish to the old Humbrol paint to make it smoother

That would kinda defeat the point of this particular project being humbrol only… Why Tamiya though? Is there something special about their gloss compared to other brands? I’m not sure it would do much seeing (as mentioned in the video) the old humbrol acrylic is grainy with almost a fine sand-like texture. Not sure a gloss will do anything to mitigate that

When I started modeling when I was a kid, Humbrol was about the only thing you could get (mind you, Acrylics weren't a thing back then either). I'm still a huge fan of humbrol enamel paints today.

Ahhh, Humbrol. The smell of my youth! What memories even the name brings back. No, i wasn't 'huffing' it, but as it was the only paint that was available the odours still stick in my mind. I wonder if the smell is still the same?

Lovely build Matt :) There was a USAAF dive bomber with a clear panel in the floor of the cockpit so when the pilot saw the target through it he knew it was time to dive. Perhaps the Luftwaffe used it for a similar purpose?

Yes, i imagine it was to improve visibility, there were quite a few aircraft with lower windows - one that comes to mind is the Brewster Buffalo

This is another level to what I used to do 50 + years ago. During the lock downs here in OZ I got back into a little bit of model building. What I did notice was that the aircraft no longer have an included clear two piece stand and the German aircraft no longer include the Sw@st!ker for the tails.

Stands were removed in the late 80s onwards by most manufacturers as a cost saving exercise. As was the omission of certain decals (because the symbols being banned in certain countries made the production of different versions of the kits to comply with those rules, and other versions for other countries is also cost prohibitive)

Excellent build/ breakdown and review of products used. Just a question, the exhausts painted gun metal, they would usually go rusty pretty quick and gun barrels would normally on German aircraft be black no?

Personally I prefer Humbrol, I sometimes use Tamiya, however, I find theres not much to choose between Humbrol & other paints (Mr Colour, Vallejo etc....) except price. Nice build and looks like a great kit. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks! I found some vallejo model air paints for £1 a bottle recently - must have been clearances - so picked up a couple (not that there was much choice left) but yes, Humbrol does tend to be a little more of a "budget" range but as time progresses, they are not much cheaper than other brands

I find with the matt varnish you need to give it a LOT of shaking/stirring and then it seems ok.

I didn't know they did a 210, i've seen their 410 but probably hard to get hold of now seeing as it was last seen in 1989 - not even sure who would have the tools for that now (the Revell version seemed to be a reboxed Frog kit)

Good to see you being challenged by trying to airbrush older none airbrush paints. Can see the graininess in the final result although it adds 'visual interest' at the weathering layer. Not a bad thing. You can get graininess with rattle cans and airbrushes regardless if conditions are against you (high psi/low humidity etc). I've had this whilst spraying Tamiya primers on sunny days standing in the full sun. Can imagine pushing airbrush psis higher to get it to flow which is counter to the desired result - dry too fast and sputter the surface. My thoughts on trying to thin these generation 1 Humbrols (equally Vallejo model colour etc) is could they be put into a dropper bottle with thinner and then put in an ultrasonic bath to give the pigment time/energy to disperse in the thinner. I did see a video on home brew thinners and the guy used a drop or two of dishwater rinse aid in with water and glycerol to make a batch which will lower the surface tension/viscosity of the paint and therefore aid dispersing the pigment. This in theory would further aid the paint flow in the airbrush by lubricating and wetting the needle. I've not had chance to experiment with this home brew yet as the first batch I made in a recycled pop bottle, some microorganisms colonised it as glycerol is obviously something they feed on! Will add a bit of isopropyl alcohol or other biocide in the next batch.

That’s hard to pin down, I only log the start and finish dates. Over the nine days I would imagine I probably spent like 20 - 30 hours on this kit maybe 🤔

I know you already left another reply saying that you saw where I discussed that bit in the video - but incase anyone is reading these comments - the main reason was because the amount of plastic to be bonded left me to decide the cement may be a stronger bond, but it comes as a risk

I've never tried the humbrol acrylic paint, mostly use there enamel paints quite smelly like but they do airbrush really nice and the colours are pretty accurate l think. Just a bit of a fucking nightmare to get hold of at the moment. Nice job there Matt keep looks real good 👍

I agree that the RLM colour in the screw top pots is grainy as i have had the same problems with it. It's ok to brush but doesn't like the airbrush. The flip top lids paint is fine even the early stuff. Humberol acrylic thinners has a retarder in it to help the paint flow through the airbrush and self level when brushed. Too much thinners and you have the problem of paint taking a while to dry. You can use this to advantage though if you brush paint. I actually prefer the Humberol cement as it is a bit thicker than Tamiya but i do use both. Never used the bottled varnishes though. I like the 3 gen matt varnish as it gives a realistic look to the models. For figures i prefer to use a mix of Mig lucky matt and Humberol. Interesting video though and the finished article looks fine. 👍

Try building the airfix DHc Beaver using ONLY Humbrol paints. PROBLEM they don't make two of the colours in the instructions

I've had the same issues with the humbrol varnishes. No difference between the gloss, satin & matt. They all come out as glossy.

Looks amazing Matt,it was for sure a very fun video to watch,and I honestly really enjoy these long videos,as I feel Like I could learn a lot from them,and right now I am painting Airfix’s Stuka in 1/48,so any tips for a German mid war green camo?(I am the last person to know anything about aircraft camo names,as I exclusively do armour kits,but I hope you know which one I mean),but I am also thinking of making a libyan camo,so also any tips for that?

Stukas were usually RLM 65 underside, RLM 70 and 71 upper side in a splinter pattern. Mediterranean and North Africa Stukas Were different, using desert colours.

Sadly my knowledge is not amazing either - I did build a Revell Ju87 in 1/72 some years back which was overall green but cant remember specifically which colours I used (video is on my channel somewhere though)

Although their UK made enamels were the mainstay of my 1960s adolescence, after horrendous experience with Humbrol's Chinese manufactured acrylics a decade ago, today I don't use Humbrol anything other than a few metal tinlets left over purchased in the 1980s & '90s. Arguably past their 'best before' date, those which had remained airtight, once remixed mixed or with the addition of a small proportion of premium enamel thinners, for hand brushing detail they flow and still self-level, remarkably not appearing to have to have lost any of their properties after all this time. Quality as was once upon a time. I airbrush other than detail today, so it's predominantly either Tamiya Acrylics or Vallejo Model Air for me.

Those older Humbrol paints are really not good. In close up, you can really see how grainy they look and how they have just not 'flowed' when sprayed on. Aside from that, the Humbrol range of stuff looks OK, but there are definitely better options out there. Nice build though despite the limits.

What were Airfix thinking of making the canopy a 3 piece part

So i'm pretty sure this was discussed with the designer and if I remember correctly the reasons were: 1. The design is an "odd" shape for injection moulding (seeing as it "baloons" out at the sides) and the designer opted for three parts to avoid an obvious mould seam along any edges that would be visible 2. The canopy could have been in a single part made using additional slides on the tooling but this pushes the price up considerably. 3. From the above it would seem it was the best cost vs. achievability compromise 4. The 3 parts sit flatter on the sprue which has the benefit of taking up less space in the box and preventing scratches from rubbing up against other components when packed. Also, keeping to a standard size of available box results in, again, less cost for shipping and packing Personally I think that if you are careful you can overcome the issues these 3 parts present - perhaps my only complaint is that there was no option to display the canopy open - but again that would have pushed the price and complexity up. I think for a 2023 tooling with this level of build quality (and cartograph decals) of a medium sized model in 1/72 scale, for a price under £25 it's not a bad compromise

Just watching this now but I have to admit I'm starting to avoid humbrol products now. Since their horrible varnish and decalfix ruined my last kit. So yeah, not a Humbrol fan these days.

I don't like the finish. Kinda gritty. It looks like it's full of dust or thick spatters. Bad paint? Wrong pressure? I would welcome such an effect (even if by accident) on a tank, but aircraf surface should be baby smooth.

@@gleggett3817 as discussed in this video, the grainy composition of the older Humbrol acrylics resulted in blockages and a slightly "lumpy" appearance of the paint. I have also done a review (well a few) video on the newer Humbrol Gen2 paints and whilst much better, they are a little inconsistent
