The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is possibly one of the most famous of the various heavy bombers that saw service during the second world war.
Whilst not capable of carrying the heaviest payloads, it was well known for its sheer wealth of defensive gun positions with the aim of keeping enemy fighters at bay due to shared defensive firepower of close formations of this aircraft.
Join me in this video as i get to grips with the Revell B-17G Flying Fortress (04283) plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.

To get a true aluminium finish first clean the body with spirits and then put a base layer of gloss black paint down first. Let it dry under cover to avoid dust. Then airbrush AK Interactive polished aluminium (already thinned) onto the black. Next mask off various panels and add AK Dark aluminium and / or Duraluminium . The finish on the real B17s was not uniform as panels were replaced. Humbrol aluminium is too grainy whereas AK aluminium paints are superb.

Nice built! I’m currently building this kit and going full interior details…I will cut some sections of the fuselage skin with a jeweller saw, similar to the forward removable nose part to be able to peek inside. From my reference material and for others benefits I may point out the following. Little Miss Mischief was rebuilt with an earlier style rear turret but was replaced with the later style turret (called the Cheyenne turret) at some point, she had a Cheyenne turret when she belly landed and was scrapped in May 45. Most late b17 were bare metal from the radio room bulkhead going aft. The two additional seats in the radio room were facing forward not sideways. All ammo boxes were made of plywood not metal. And the provided bombs are 2 x1000lbs and 2x500lbs general purpose bombs.

I hope you are very proud of what I think is your best, most complex build and paint job you have made into a video. I remember the interior bits were a challenge, but your subtle bits of weathering and staining, plus the amount of masking you did so well do stand out as majorly good modelling!

Hey Matt, nice work on the flying fortress! As someone who has done a small bit of research on the aircraft but is in no way an expert, WW2 interior green was not uniform and in many cases was nonexistent especially towards the end of the war as any paint added weight. Manufacturers where pumping the aircraft out as fast as possible and paint was often considered a waste. Now for the British, it was completely different, and they thought paint, especially camo, was necessary. Once again I am not an authority on this just someone who has done a bit of research.

Hi Matt.. the B17 maximum bomb load was 5 tons, split into small bombs as the bomb bay structure wouldn't allow large ones sacrificing carrying capacity for defensive armament, which personally I think was a strange choice as it was a /bomber/. The Lancaster on the other hand could carry twice as much - 10 tons - and had an /uninterrupted/ 33 foot long bomb bay so could carry much larger bombs, such as the 4000lb 'cookie' or 8000lber - which was just two cookies bolted together - Tallboy - 5 tons - and Grand Slam - 10 tons. Obviously both types carried lower weights if the target was further away. So.. in a nutshell the model is designed to have the undercarriage /down/ but the bomb bay /shut.. Disappointing as I'd think parts for both options could be easily included.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, i guess they thought the overlapping defensive fire was a good tradeoff for the smaller bombloads
@MCT954
@MCT954 6 ай бұрын
The Americans thought that multiple heavily armed bombers flying in tight formations would keep losses because of the weight of firepower. The British had already found that didn't work by December 1939. The Americans ignored what they were told and paid a very heavy price in 1943, until the arrival of Merlin powered Mustangs as long range escorts. BTW the Lancasters bomb bay can be traced back to the original specification for the Manchester that required the carriage of two torpedoes. A nice model.
@julianmhall
@julianmhall 6 ай бұрын
@@MCT954 thanks :) I didn't know about the Manchester spec. I thought the heavy spec was just for a 4 engined bomber - although originally it also required doubling as a paratroop transport which is why the Stirling is so tall.

The aluminum finish can be vastly improved by using a dishwashing sponge with a white abrasive side (do not use the green one). This will remove the excess flake from the finished paint and the song side can be used to give the finish a polish. Do this before applying a varnish finish.

A very nice build ya done there, got the same kit in my stash to do either Scorchy II or Little Miss Mischief. Couple of small errors in your build though if you are OK with these small points. The interior colour should be dark/bronze green in the cockpit area only, the nose interior and from the bomb bay aft to the tail gunners area should be bare aluminium. The support strut you added under the machine guns in the waist gunners compartment should not be fitted to the waist guns in a B-17g, as the guns were supported by the mounting piece in the glazed window. The strut was is a support that held the waist guns in the B-17E and F models as these had open and unglazed gun positions in the waist area, but when the G version came along with the glazed waist windows and the improved mount, the support strut was done away with. The other thing is the upper wing staining. The vents on the upper wings are cold air vents that come from the superchargers on the engines, no sooting or oil would be ejected from these. Any upper staining from the engines would trail back and then fan out between the vents as shown in this video of a 1/48 B-17f I built (6:49 is where the weathering can be best seen) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNOdp5eVnd7NaYk.htmlsi=LB7DN0Ii9usoREMk Apart from that, ya done a really nice build on what is a half decent kit considering the age of the tooling ^.^ Model on and regards ^^
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info - I knew the paint colour wasn't necessarily accurate and do mention that in the video. The supports for the guns were again mentioned in the video but it is good to know I didn't need to use them - but again Revell caused confusion with their instructions I'm sure I had looked at some real images of the aircraft and had seen staining coming from the areas I applied it, but if i am miss-rembembering i'm putting it down to modeller's license :) Thanks for sharing your points!
@stormus65
@stormus65 6 ай бұрын
@ModelMinutes no worries ^.^ As for the upper wing staining, it's a common mistake made, even I've done it myself a few years back. A lot of that stems from the 1990/1 film Memphis Belle, where the streaks are heavily applied from those cold air vents. Many modellers have fallen into that trap in the past ^.^ As for Little Miss Mischief, she did indeed have parts from approx 14 different airframes in her before she was struck off charge after a crash landing. The dark green patches on the olive drab/grey aft fuselage were applied to blank out the old Squadron codes of the previous Squadron, leaving LMM to have the new ones applied

Hi Matt; I'm currently building the "F" version of this kit (Memphis Belle), and agree that the plastic is very well moulded, and fits superbly - better than than several of their own newer kits (!), but it really is time to reproduce the instructions in the nice, newer colour book form! 😏 The flash though - even on the newest stampings of these parts (2010) is still typical Revell..... if there's flash, you can tell it's a Revell kit...😜 Still, it's very good and you did an excellent job with that tricky, yet fascinating colour scheme..... 😃 👍

If the Avro Lancaster had the same armament and armour as the B-17G, it would also, potentially, have a similar Bomb Load. Keep this in mind, the early versions of the B-17 were already in service from 1938, while the Avro Lancaster was introduced during the war
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 ай бұрын
Stemming from a different combat doctrine, where the UK favoured larger bomb loads in less armed aircraft, relying on tactics and night cover to achieve their aim - whereas the USA doctrine was still very pre-war in the belief that combined defensive armament would be enough to ensure safety in large numbers

It's just the amount of time it demands and I'm trying to work out if I can do two or three builds at the same time without going mad with my work area. - Take it easy keep up the good work I believe you're in Somerset I am too. 👍

Speaking of the Memphis Belle in the movie that was made about her even though it was fictional did the real B-17 Flying Fortres have a hand crank for the landing gears incase the electrics were shorted out like what happened in the movie where the crew worked in tandem to lower the plane's right landing gear as it was heading to the airfield at the end of the film.

I got one question I have seen so many pictures of B-17 bombers and I would like to know why they have a different letter like B-17G and B-17E for example like the famous Memphis Belle she was called a B-17E Flying Fortress so that's my question does it mean there is like a difference between them I sure would like to know.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 ай бұрын
The letter indicates a change between the variant of the aircraft. Over time modifications are made that improve them in some way, or otherwise alter the machine in some way that will make it perform more specific roles or duties. American convention was to add a letter sequentially as per the alphabet starting from A. British aircraft would have their variant usually indicated by Roman numerals
@markfranks1329
@markfranks1329 14 күн бұрын
'Memphis Belle' was a B-17F, not an E. The F variant followed the E and the G followed the F.

The b17s could actually carry 600lbs more than the Lancasters, at 14,600lbs of bomb weight, but that was only if they carried more on the wings. Internally, they could only hold 8,000lbs. The Lancasters could hold their full bomb weight internally, but it was also bigger, and carried less guns and crew. The b17s had about 2 tons of 50 cal ammo on it, with 7 gun positions, while the Lancasters only had 3. They also flew totally different mission types, with the B17s doing high altitude daylight strategic bombings, and the Lancasters doing mid-low nighttime indiscriminate area bombings. B17s attacked strategic areas, like factories, while the Lancasters just leveled whole cities.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 5 ай бұрын
Whilst this information is interesting, I find it amusing that this long response is to a 10 second comment in the video about the size of the bomb bay. You make mention that the B17 had to be modified from standard to have external bomb racks installed which would increase the bombload beyond that of the Lancaster, but if we allow ourselves to modify the Lancaster as well it could then carry the 22,000Ibs Grand Slam bomb, which seems considerably higher than the figure for the B17 you stated. Also, I never knew that the Lancaster couldn't do strategic bombing requiring accuracy . . I guess those missions against the U-boat pens, the Damns, Tirpitz and Bielefeld viaduct (to name a few) must have just been flukes. Edit - technically precision strikes are tactical, not strategic
@danvondrasek
@danvondrasek 5 ай бұрын
@ModelMinutes if you wanna talk about those 32 special lancasters carrying 22,000lbs, than you also gotta mention Operations Aphroditie and Anvil, where b17s were also stripped down and carried 20,000lbs, too. But that wasn't my point. My point was theyre 2 different planes designed for 2 different mission types. You can't argue that the Lancasters didn't mostly fly at night, dropping indiscriminately. They sacrificed the additional guns and crew for more bomb space. That's why the b17s have such smaller bomb bays. Also, I'm a bit autistic, and when I can't sleep, and I'm watching videos at 2am, 10 second blurbs get stuck in my head. I didn't mean my comment to be a jab, or anything serious, and I feel like you took it a bit personal. That wasn't my intention at all. Also also, the dams and Uboat raids had more to do with the bouncing bombs than the bombers themselves, and Tirpitz took yall 15 tries, 400 total planes to hit it twice in the final raid which dropped almost 80 bombs. That's not really a precision bombing run.
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 5 ай бұрын
@@danvondrasek I’m not sure they were designed for 2 different mission types, just that the USA wouldn’t take on the advice from the RAF that daylight bombing was too much of a risk. The 2 different mission profiles were a result of the USA having a different doctrine that was still very pre-war in that the “bomber would always get through” and they paid dearly for that. As it stands both aircraft were still designated as heavy bombers and could do each other’s jobs. Clearly the B17 is more your preferred aircraft and that’s fine, but regardless of their mission profiles I think the b17 factually has the smaller bomb bay which was my original comment in the video.

The B-17 was already outdated long before it saw action over Europe. The 7 .50 caps offered very little if any protection against German fighters and they suffered very similar losses to the British when they attempted day light bombing, so the extra guns was more of a problem than a solution. The US strategic bombing campaign for all intents and purposes was a complete waste of time and man power. Brave men were sent into the sky to do a mission they couldn’t possibly succeed. They missed their target largely because the bomb sight wasn’t designed for heights of 25,000 feet and not only that the US struggled to get more than 120 planes in the air on any given mission, whilst the British were sending up to 400-600 bombers a night and getting far better results. Point is the B-17 was complete crap, with terrible bomb load because those 500lbs bombs were great for destroying houses, but completely useless against targets that were built with reenforced concrete….. like idk a ball baring plant maybe? So yeah the Lancaster was a far better plan than the B-17.

What is a better idea to start out with? Airfix or Revell? Airfix seems more easy yet Revell has more range of aircrafts
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 ай бұрын
This is a rather subjective choice. If you are starting modelling I would suggest picking a smaller, more simple model to construct of a topic that you are interested in. Both Airfix and Revell make "Starter Sets", but where they differ is that the Revell sets are just "normal" kits bundled up with some paints and glue, whereas the Airfix versions are specifically designed to be simpler to build with much more help in the instructions to help the modeller understand the process. Airfix also indicates on the boxes of their kits how old the tooling and design is of them - older kits tend to be a little more tricky to build whilst newer ones have better design and moulding accuracy. Revell does not do this and can be a real mixed bag without first researching one of their kits before buying it. So yes, I would say that specific Airfix starter sets are easier than most things Revell have and are more user friendly, but ultimately you need to pick something you are interested in, fits your budget, and is accessible

Quite frankly, a refreshing build of a kit without the obsession, and time, over adding unrealistic purely fantasy, modeller effects, like interminable layers of varnishes, black wash to show fake detail, and other 'special' weathering. The internal detail is for people who build kits to LEARN ABOUT THE OBJECT being modeled? Still, thanks for keeping it simple and free of pedantry and wasting time that could be spent having fun in Reality.
