Model railroading isn't sexy is the simple answer. If more people shared my videos on their social media platforms it would get more views but I go out of my way to not beg people to do that. Thank you for the kind words.

I love it. This may just be the style of benchwork i need to build my 10'x10' layout that has to be an island, has to be modular, but I still would like double decked for operation length, and to be able to model an entire sub of my prototype in such limited space. Thank you for this. Subbed!

Can’t believe that was all from plywood! I’ve always imagined freestanding layouts to require 2x4s or 1x2s
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 2 жыл бұрын
Good quality plywood is more stable than solid pine. Look for something with at least 7 plys. Even with a far less expensive table saw than Ondrew's, it can be accurately ripped into exactly the width you need with no wastage. I always have the lumber yard rip it into 16" or 24" strips first to make it more manageable.
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. You can make these with just a circular saw, drywall square, and a kreg jig. I use the fancy tools as it makes the process faster but they aren’t required. I’ll look at making a video on making benchwork with basic tools when I’m not so behind on projects.

Interesting idea for dual level bench work, question why pocket hole vs face drilling screws
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork Жыл бұрын
Face drilled screws are actually not that strong particularly in plywood. Pocket screws actually go into the side grain of the adjoining piece making for a stronger joint. Pocket screws have the added benefit of allowing crossmembers to be moved even after the facia has been added making layout modifications like adding a turntable much easier since you don’t need a saw. I also find them faster than face screws but that could just be me.

I never thought about the idea of moving a cross member after you install bench work, great idea 💡

Many years ago I built C shelving for a N scale model railroad to be mounted to the wall. The only difference is that I found a small curved corner cut at the back of the C, top and bottom, seemed stronger than a sharp 90 degree cut corner. If someone used a cheap plywood, leaned on the lower section, it could crack at the 90 degree cut corner. A curved cut seemed to provide some additional strength. You could test this idea out, but you are using quality plywood. But thanks for reminding us of of this layout benchwork construction. Oh! You should demonstrate building a corner module in this style. That N scale layout I am mulling over in my mind measures out to two sections 65.5" L x 18" D on the short shelf and 78.5" L x 18" D on the long shelf. I might add on another section 65.5" L x 24" D as I have found another small plan that would expand operations. I could employ the C style benchwork you have shown here. Storage is a consideration. i will probably get some scorn from the wife as I am already building an On30 layout in the man cave. So, I am considering designing it portable and on a rolling rack. Three sections stacked above each other on the rack for storage. One section could be bolted to the top of rack. I could roll this into any room. Pull out each of the other two sections from the rack, bolt those to the top section, still supported by the rack, employ removable legs to support those while in use. The backdrops could be stored on the opposite side of the rack somewhat vertical and held in place by bolts or rare earth magnets when in use. When done remove the backdrops, unbolt the two sections, store everything away in the rack to roll it back to where I would store it. It would have to be narrow enough to pass through any interior door, yet sturdy. Thanks for the Fraction Calculator. Got it installed on my iPhone and tested it out.

Cool video. Enjoyed watching it. I came up with a very similar arrangement for a few areas of the layout I've just started building. My method uses more wood for the same result, but it's quicker and doesn't require such expensive tools.

Can you hang these modules on a wall? Or do you still need legs? And are they 3/4” plywood?
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can hang them on the wall! I like using the French cleat method as it allows you to put the mounts on the wall before lifting the big modules into place. 18mm plywood which is essentially 3/4 plywood.

I build in whatever scale people want me to. I have videos on this channel of me building N,HO, O, and G. I’ve also built Z scale but I don’t have a video of that. My benchwork is over engineered so it will support whatever scale you throw at it.

This is the concept I'm going to use for my new layout. (I'll be speaking with you in the months ahead) I'm going to stay away from the permanent - double deck layout - attached to wall studs - this time around. The concept shown in the video provides places to mount a backdrop, upper valance to hide lighting, and lower fascia - all in one modular unit. Everything is going to be portable. It took me months to rip out my basement sized, double deck layout when we moved. The waste of track and wood was epic. The only question I'd have... I don't want to have long runs of straight modules end to end. Are you able to put, say, a 30 degree angle on the ends of two modules in order to get them to take a different path than straight?
@MRBenchwork
@MRBenchwork 2 жыл бұрын
Yes multiple angles, curves and even slopes are all achievable with my freestanding dual deck method. Later this year I’ll be building a layout on this channel that’s mostly curves and all free standing multi deck.
