Very effective system, in starting from dark to light and fine to coarse, with application of cement to immobilize the layers. The addition of the purple wildflowers give much interest to the foreground; and I believe that adding a boulder or two of the same type that is in background, would would help tie the front to the back. The wildflowers as vegetation that nestles among the turf would benefit from further anchoring, so as to depict it as emerging from the finer ground cover. Excellent results, especially considering that it was fashioned under the constraints of a camera.

What I like to do is to paint the platform or surface in green or earth colors, then sprinkle the green ground foam material on while the paint is still wet, then after a bit apply scenic cement to seal the ground cover.

The Scenic Cement will assist with decreasing the shedding of turf and other products but will not create the hardened surface most gamers are looking for. Minwax makes a product called Polycrylic. We have not tested it for this application but our scenery experts are familiar with it and other gamers have recommended the product. To use it, dilute 1 part water to 4 parts Polycrylic and spray on using a common household sprayer.

Looks great! For just under $500 you can build your own fantastic 2' x 3' diorama. If you looking for a 4' x 8' train layout with woodland scenics buildings, auto scenes, switches, just plug lighting, sidewalks and asphalt plus tools to craft with just add another cool 2 grand. I should have played the lottery. Addictive, expensive hobby I've gotten myself into.

You can most definitely sand the Plaster Cloth once it is dry. You would only want to do a light sanding with a very fine grit paper so you do not expose the fibers holding the cloth together. If you want to paint the rock castings individually, lay them all out on a covered surface and apply the Pigments according to our technique. However, to create a more realistic look, adhere the rock castings to the pond, allow them to dry and then paint all at one time.

thanks for your reply and advice! can you provide some additional advice/guidance re: another one of your products, Realistic Water? if one adds water lillies, swamp grass, cat tails etc to your water feature (say a pond or lake), do you add them after the "resin" hardens completely and if so what kind of adhesive should one use? or do you insert or emplace the scenery items after you pour the water and while it is still curing? (rocks and such you emplace before one pours i know)...woodland scenics instruct all not to touch the "resin" until it is completely hardened)...finally if your water feature is on the edge of your layout and you do not have a fascia built on the layout edge as a permanent dam, what do you think is best to use as a temporary dam to prevent leakage and maintain the level of the water at the edge? styrene? glass? piece of mirro? wood with wax paper? will the resin stick to the dam material as you remove the temporary dam???? i see so many you tube videos where posters (who use all sorts of resins, varnish, etc.) bemoan either leakage, damage to the water feature at the edge, and/or not being able to remove the dam material from the resin once it hardens...thanks again!!!! your products are the best! :o)

Hi, D Chen! We recommend putting objects on top of the Realistic Water once the surface becomes tacky, allowing the itemsto stick. However, if the items are heavy, this may cause the items to sink. We recommend testing in a small area first. If you are wanting to permanently attach items to the top of the Realistic Water once it is cured, we recommend using Realistic Water or Scenic Glue (S190). To create a dam before pouring your water feature, choose any clear piece of plastic like styrene or acetate. Make sure the area where the pieces will be affixed is clean and flat. Adhere the clear plastic to the layout with double stick tape. Make the plastic higher than the anticipated level of the water feature, and pour the Realistic Water. Once the water height has been achieved and the Realistic Water has cured, carefully cut the plastic to the level of the water and leave in place. For further assistance, you can contact Sales and Customer Service directly with this form: securewoodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/ContactUs or by calling 573-346-5555.

What can i do to stop my ground cover from clumping up when i add the final coat of scenic cement ?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 10 жыл бұрын
Hello! We recommend applying the Scenic Cement to the area first, after applying the Scenic Cement, you can then apply the turf. Let the Scenic Cement dry approximately 5-10 minutes. Then Spray the Scenic Cement over the turf, you can then add additional layers of turf if desired. When you spray the Scenic Cement over the turf, you might want to spray it at a distance. Spraying to closely will cause the turf to move around and clump up. Also it is recommended that you check the nozzle of the sprayer, sometimes this can get clogged and this can cause the Scenic Cement to splatter as it is being sprayed. You can use warm soapy water to clean the spray nozzle, or try spraying some denatured alcohol through the head of the sprayer. The sprayer should give a fine spray, also it is a good idea to shake the bottle of Scenic Cement during use. Hope this helps, and Happy Modeling!

As I am working in 1/160 eg how fine is fine turf relatered to this scale. Also other items look a bit too rouge or are there tips and tricks for using these materials in finer scales?

This model was not made to a specific scale. Fine Turf is suitable for N scale. If you visit the Fine Turf page on our website, you can see the size in the description. This is also true for Coarse and Blended Turf.

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
+AngelGhost2k9 - Yes, you are able to use any ordinary spray bottle tht is made to use for water-based liquids. It is very important that with any type of sprayer that you use to make sure to wash the sprayer head out with hot soapy water following each use. This will prevent the spray head clogging due to a build up of adhesive. Hope this helps1

I was wondering if you guys could tell how I could put a grid pattern in your fine turf products because I would really like to use them in my 3d Heroclix map.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Hello Nate, Yes this will work, however there is no easy or simple way of doing this. It will be a slow, methodical process. The easiest thing to do would be to make a stencil of the grid pattern. Then, make a second stencil that is offset from the first to protect the area you 'turfed' first. Use two colors of turf. Place the first stencil where desired, brush slightly diluted Foam Tack Glue (ST1444) onto first grid area and sprinkle turf onto the wet glue. Let dry and then carefully vacuum up the excess turf. Repeat process for next grid pattern area. Hope this helps, and Happy Modeling!

Asher Bar-Yadin Although, we do not test products other than our own for their intended use, we cannot offer an opinion of how other glues will perform with Underbrush, although we know that modelers use all sorts of adhesives when creating scenery. If you have a glue you would like to try, we suggest testing it with some landscape material. If it doesn't work, you can always landscape the area again, covering it with more scenery, and you will never know there was a 'mistake.' Hope this helps!

Scenic Cement will cause turf to darken somewhat, but not enough that it is very noticeable...this sounds drastic. PD needs more information. Could you please email sales@woodlandscenics.com - attention Marsha, let them know you are the modeler on KZfaq with the question about Scenic Glue and Scenic Cement, and give the answers to the following questions to start...exactly what are the turf products you are working with and what is the surface of the board made of? That should get us on the road toward some answers. Thanks!

+dankesttouchie I'm not affiliated with Woodland Scenics in any way, but have used their products since they were first introduced. Their landscaping products do not have an actual "scale" for the most part. While they do have dome items that do have a specific scale, those are mostly vehicles, buildings, trees, and other man-made scenic items. But pretty much everything shown in the video is non-scale. I've personally used the ground cover materials for both 1:64 and 1:24 scale scenes, using the same material fro both. You should be able to use the products just fine with 1:144 scale.

+dankesttouchie Longbox55 is absolutely right. Our landscape materials will work for any scale. Even some of the smaller trees will work. I am very sorry that we did not see your question to answer it in a timely manner. I was alerted to it through Longbox55's response. Sometimes a comment will slip through the KZfaq comment notification process, and I am very sorry that yours was missed. Happy Modeling and Happy Gaming!

Great video, but way beyond my pay grade. in my estimation to get it looking natural you really need an artist touch, like this fellow has. I sure don't have the talent to mimic nature. But I'll give it a try.

Spraying blows way the fine turf particles.. using the woodland scenics spray bottle... you cannot adjust the spray nozzle!
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 3 жыл бұрын
When you spray, it should be a fine mist. If the tube and nozzle are congested, it can cause a heavier spray that could move product around. Have you cleaned the nozzle and tube recently?

It was brand new bottle... I found if you lightly squeeze the trigger its ok.. but there are only 2 setting on your nozzles not fine adjustable! Thanks again

@@markhenke2709 I have seen a few complaints on modelling forums about the Woodland Scenics spray bottle which many people think is next to useless for the type of work shown in the video. I’ve taken advice from fellow modellers who suggest ditching the WS spray bottle in favour of a smaller aftermarket mist spray bottle that gives a much finer and gentler mist. WS really need to fine tune their spray bottles.

Will this survive miniature wargaming. ie moving miniatures around on it?
@ModelSceneryExpert

Dean Edwards Thank you for your interest in our products. Yes, you can absolutely use our products as a base for wargaming. Many gamers do. However, to handle the heavy use, the boards must be sealed properly, and we do not make a sealer designed for that purpose. Luckily, our devout followers within the gaming community have shared their secret with us. Apply turf and other landscape material according to directions using Scenic Cement as an adhesive, then after all landscape is applied, spray with a solution made with Minwax Polycrylic. Do so by diluting 4-parts Minwax with 1-part water, and apply the dilution with a common household sprayer, sealing the landscape. It is also recommended that if a board is used heavily, it should be resealed every 6 months. Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, you can contact Customer Service at sales@woodlandscenics.com or 573-346-5555. Happy Gaming!

We don’t need any more easy ground cover videos. How about covering ones like the historic Red Stag layout by Geoff Knott. There are many serious narrow gauge logging modelers that would like coverage on steep canyons and hillsides and authentic tall Douglas fir and Hemlock fir trees. I know this is to sell your products however they are also used on the ones that I’ve suggested.

Hello! Thank you for your interest in our products. If you are referring to Scenic Cement™, the glue does settle some during shipping, so it needs to be shook up until there isn’t any in the bottom. We hope this resolves your issue.

TL;DR: I would like to suggest tutorials based off limited materials and have something actually look good instead of needing this insane amount of expensive material stacked ontop each other one after the other. Model railroads/dioramas were never a cheap hobby from the beginning, but now I feel even more limited with options when I buy a woodland scenics product. I've seen countless tutorials and I would try my best to create my own work based off the tutorial as painstakingly perfect as I humanly can but I don't have all the materials as the tutorial describes so I try to use what little I have that is compatible with each other and come down to one big dilemma. If you want a beautiful layout, you need not a lot of money, but a senselessly insane amount of money for even a 48''/96'' N scale layout with the amount of blended foliage material NEEDED ALONE. I have no idea if you guys keep up with your youtube channel but if you see this, I would like to suggest tutorials based off limited materials and have something actually look good. (ex. 2 blends of fine turf, medium ballast, sculpted foam or plaster sheets, necessary adhesives, maybe a brown base paint? Or something within a $20-$50 budget?)

+Zendreax the reason tutorials like that don't really exist is because it isn't possible to make it look good with just a few materials. I tried doing that and it just doesn't work well.To emulate nature lots of layers of different textures and colours is necessary to get a really good effect. He only used about $15.00 of actual materiel in this tutorial anyway although the full containers are around $8-10 a piece. The flowers are just a few bucks per bag. Those big containers go a long way.

Wrong channel for cheap modeling try some modellers channels. Which will also show other products and trciks to make it even cheaper. Like plaster cloth can be got cheaper not buying the branded stuff. And scenic glue can be replaced with PVA and water and a drop of washing up liquid.
