If there’s something I’ve learnt over a lifetime, it is to never argue with your younger self, and never question your younger self. That guy did something in a specific way for a reason, and he got you to where you are today. So you ought to give him a little more credit. 😉

Hey! Pause the video at 9:10 See the temper colors? K720 steel is still hard (50 HRC) when tempered at 400°c. At this temperature the color of steel is between light blue and grey, meaning all the edge is still plenty hard for a knife. Perhaps only the very bottom tip has gone over so let's say I ruined about 5mm of edge hardness 😜 does it really make any difference? Come on, 50 HRC isnt hard at all, knives become usable around >= 55

I was gonna say, those are some pretty temper colors but it didn't look like it affected the edge - the casting sand did its job as an insulator and heat sink. It *did* get alarmingly high up, though, enough to make me fearful.

What happens if you quench or contact-cool the blade at 400 degrees? Does that help or hurt the edge or turn it a bluish color? I never tempered anything before.

@@Sahtzor if it's only the first cm of the blade, it's not awful. it's not great and it's not something anybody would give to a customer, but the rest of the blade might've stayed hard

For those wondering if he ruined the temper of the blade. Not really, the area that changed in color really isn't the primary "working" part of the edge. With that being said, these are just novelty pieces for his collection and he understands that even though they wont be used, why not have fun heat treating them? I think both are awesome and I really want to start some casting projects.

@@LethalByChoice I just realized youre sort of right; I have accidentally tempered knives to blue but found out if the blade is very hard from the quench even turning it blue/purple can leave it still very hard and sometimes Ive even had to temper it some more to get it softer. But the colors do always mean the metal got softer even if not to the point of ruined temper.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting from the old knife, but I actually preferred it! Nothing against your current design, I just loved the design of the old one. I like watching you work though, you make a point of not being a professional X Y or Z yet you keep learning new skills and showing your progression. It's really satisfying to watch.

Serious question- if these types are just “art pieces” then why harden and temper them at all? Especially when you yourself knows the temper is ruined when you cast the handles. Just leave that step out? I don’t know…

@@BlackBeardProjects I'd be interested in seeing some hardness files used near the tang, you can see the temper colours going up the blade. I find it hard to understand how it would still be hardened past those colour changes.

All the master craftsmen with the "You wrecked the temper" comments. IT IS AN ART PIECE NOT A FUNCTIONAL WEAPON. Pretty sure he understands the tempering is ruined as he knows what he is doing. But I bet if used as a weapon it would still kill or remove limbs perfectly fine. Do you know even in the bronze age, the softer metal of the weapons made in those days would still remove limbs and heads perfectly well. Ruined temper or not, it is still a piece of art, and lovely too.

it turned out to be cool, of course, but the molten brass (well, or whatever it was) greatly heated the cutting part of the blade and this, to put it mildly, will not have a good effect on its properties

So I’m curious, what happens to the temper when you pour the molten copper on to the blade? I’ve been wanting to skip having to drill and file out then pommel a blade with knuckles and do this method but that’s my major concern is messing up the temper

It's funny because one of your project (I think it was "lost wax casting") motivated me to make my own metal furnance and try brass casting.. I failed lol. Everybody who ever tried metal casting knows, how hard it is. Good model and the mold is the key. You made great job then and now- two part mold is big improvement comparing to the lost form, but I think you used this technique first time on Quillon Dagger, right? Those knives are real Zombie Killers 😁!

It will bend easily rite in front of the Handel the aluminum would probably work beter doesn't have to be as hot but it shure looks like it would do the job if you could cast the Handel separate it would be beter

The temper is completely shot towards the heel of the cutting edge. Great blade regardless.

Yes, you can tell by the discolouration that the heat treat is completely shot.

It's an art piece he stated. Not a knife with a perfect temper. Though I do believe that "It WILL KEEEEELL" lol I also think that you could heat and harden and temper once again after the handle is poured to have a better more consistent hardening.

I wonder why he goes through the trouble to harden and then temper the blade if 1) it’s just an art piece and 2) it’s just going to be ruined by the casting of the handle? Something doesn’t make sense.

@@vincedibona4687 Absolutely correct. Heat treating an art piece takes it from art piece to functional knife. Destroying the heat treat just seems like ignorance to thermal effects on steel. He could have just said it was art from the beginning and not heat treated it at all and it would have made sense. And on top of that put less wear onto his tooling with hardened and tempered steel.

Awesome work, as always. But I have a question, if anyone can help me out: when you cast the brass directly into the knife, don't you kind of ruin the heat treatment? Or you use brass specifically because it melts in a lower temperature that woudn't ruin the hardness of the blade? Just a thought. Tks

@WungusBill I watched a Ruana knives vid and they poured their molten aluminum onto the handles with the blades resting in a tub of water thereby staying cool, the mold kept the alum. from running past handle. BB could have poured his handle before heat treatment and then by wrapping a wet cloth over handle taped on with heat resistant tape, holding just blade in fire, then quenching, then rest just blade on a red hot flat piece of metal until it tempers to golden. Handle will be safe.

@WungusBill it works, Ive done it many times, if you have a round forge like mine you can hold to where just the blade is in the heat, a torch would be great too i bet, the wet rag will still be wet altho maybe singed when finished.
