The design concept for this piece was to create a sofa end table with the smallest living room footprint possible. From a functional design perspective, this meant a cantilevered design. From a visual design perspective, mid-century modern tapers gave the line of the silhouette a more dynamic, varying thickness.

That's a good point. The table is counterbalanced to hold 12 pounds. I plan to add a bigger metal plate to the bottom.

Gorgeous table! 😍 I'm a complete amateur, but I was wondering if glue alone provides enough strength to hold on the top and bottom (I have no idea just how much a side grain to end grain glue-up can hold). Would adding something like biscuits or dowels be better? Thank you for sharing your lovely design and hard work!

Thanks for the feedback. Although I am confident that the glue is strong enough for the way I'll use this table, an argument for reinforcement can be made. Dowels or a Festool domino would be my first choice as there is legitimate debate whether biscuits add any strength to joints (search videos for biscuit strength test). If I were making this for a client I would add extra reinforcement for peace of mind haha.
