Open Secrets is a documentary series that looks at just this-secrets lived out in the open, things everyone knows about, but no one will talk about-until that moment when it becomes fully exposed to the world. Each episode visits a different country, looking at a single secret and exploring why the issue remained a secret for years despite existing out in the open.
What has allowed these secrets to fester in the open for so long? For some, the reason is a risk, that blowing the whistle can be deadly. For others, it’s a privilege, that they benefited from the secret staying such for too long.
This series is about the insurmountable control those in the corridors of power have in societies-till someone decides to risk it all to take them head-on.

Actually, this is not only a problem in commercial fishing. It's a problem with nearly every product we use or consume. In nearly all products you will find components in the product or in parts of it, in its packaging or its logistics, which entail exploitation or outright slavery.

I'm pro free market, and international trade, but not slavery. There needs to be international workers' rights, and a major advocacy group and representatives for them. And regulations need to be overseen and enforced. That this exists, still, during this age of political awareness is embarrassing for us as a so-called intelligent species. Free market does not mean slavery or worker exploitation. Free market means if you can't profit then you don't profit. You fail, and someone else or another business steps in.

My uncle is a survivor of the fisherman slave. Lured to fish in the sea as a teenage, turned to a slave and escaped when he was 40. He mentioned once that “Ifany of the slave ever gotten sick, they get thrown overboard”. 😢

Still I don't get it why nobody tries to fight, like I'm 100% sure that there were many opportunities, if there's full boat of workers that are being held on boat and only few bosses I think one plan and one DIY shank would save their lifes. Yeah someone gonna say it sounds easy but actually I'm 100% sure it's more than possible, they're not handcuffed or imprisoned otherwise how would they work so with correct plan they're free to riot

@@bronzeheel You mean minimize mostly everything in this world, because most of it is worked off slave labor? Obviously China and India are competing for who can “manage” the most sweat shops. And I live in the US, my first job was TJMAXX, it was literally a “sweat shop”…at least how the back room was managed. When I got there, safety was non-existent, I was only getting paid $12 an hour, and you can never, ever, question the idiocy of the amount of pallets we were getting…which was obviously too much. And that meant everything piled up and there wasn’t enough workers to help, and of course the managers and boss always made “jokes” about how there wasn’t enough room, or just made dumb jokes in general. Literally the only thing I took advantage of was the my breaks. I would stay longer because the mangers never paid attention because they were overworked as well, but obviously we got the worst of it.

@@aus-li when I speak of minimizing consumption, I mean minimizing consumption of everything, not just food. Believe me, I've worked in multiple sweat shops; it never gets easier. For TJMaxx to exist, there has to be a demand, and the demand for needless crap is high. Reducing consumption does not fix the problem of mass consumerism, but it helps, and it hurts businesses in their wallets when we stop buying things we don't need. Despite this, there is no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism. From the coffee and tea people drink, they never think twice about how difficult and back breaking it is to actually hand pick the fruit and leaves. They never think about the chocolate that comes from formerly colonized African nations that are still poor. Simply demanding to know where the stuff we buy isn't enough. Companies lie. This is why I said the best we can do is reduce our consumption of needless crap as a whole and stop breeding.

Really well done documentary, the juxtaposition of the beautifully shot seafood footage with the horrifying stories of what was happening at sea was so chilling, really makes you think about how many people have been exploited to deliver the products we take for granted to see at our stores

Easily tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions are heavily exploited for our first world "needs". Look at Eastern Congo, Nigerian Oil Delta, the Middle East, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and many, many other countries where this happens day after day, year after year, decade after decade. Nothing is done to stop it because that would affect how we live. We would have to make do with less "stuff". Any capitalist's worst fear.

True. But as the guy said in the video, humans want all the modern gadgets; computers, cell phones, games, etc.. They knowingly board these boats being informed that it's too good to be true. Yet they do it for the chance of changing their destiny. Not unlike people who get caught up in the illegal drug industry really. They all feel they will beat the odds and return home victorious.

@@dawnrobbins5877 actually most just get drugged and kidnapped, then put on the boats while unconscious, wake up to the threat of execution if they don't start working. If the slave gets uppity, torture him, if he gets rebellious they just kill him,then repeat the process and pay off police or just straight up lie to those who come by looking for the missing guy.

Slavery does really run deep in Thailand, not just in fishing industry but in government and military as well. Recently, there is a case of a woman who was lured into slavery by a mistress of a senate. In short, the mistress lured the woman to join military, and used her husband's influence to move the woman to work at her house. The mistress, then, threatened and forced the woman to work as her new housewife. The woman was paid only a portion of her salary from her military career; the rest of the salary was stolen by the mistress. Moreover, the woman also was daily tortured by the mistress. Other than regularly beating, the woman said that there was a time when the mistress sprayed alcohol on her hair and lighted it on fire, or beat her face with a rod, which ended up broke her nose.

the reason why this nation is so cheap, but a reckoning day is comming and when you have something as toxic as slavery so common in your every day life this lead to civil war in many cases, oh by the way who are some of the biggest consumer not only of this sea food but many other products laced with slave labor WHITE PEOPLE as always and the reason why your nations are getting filled with such migrants exploitation that is NEVER EVER free eventually you or your children pay.

There was a story published prior to 2015 about an island in the Andaman Sea that inhabited by fisherman who had jumped off their fishing boats and swam to the island to escape. One man interviewed claimed that he had been held against his well as a slave on a fishing ship for ten years. The Captains of the boats would immediately take your passport, so you couldn't leave your the boat. All the while you were working on the boat, you had to pay the Captain for everything you consumed. Food, medicine, clothing. It truly is modern day slavery. The brokers work in Thailand, Singapore, Philippines. They scout the small villages for young men willing to pay the $500.00 fee to the broker to get them a job on a fishing boat. Once they arrive they are forced to work without any chance to get off.

This video is about the situation in Thailand, but migrant workers on Taiwanese commercial fishing boats are treated the same too. As well as personal care assistance workers and those who work at factories - many of these workers, often from Southeast Asian countries, come looking to make a better life for themselves and their families back home, only to find themselves severely abused and discriminated against. It's a terrible thing across most developed countries...

3 weeks ago i went on a sport fishing exploration trip off the islands of Sumatra indonesia (mentawai, tanah bala ,nias etc). I came across a few non natives(thai, myanmar) who were on these islands and came to find out that these guys had escaped from fishing vessels. They all mentioned that they were unable to return back home as they had no identities on them. Its really disheartening to know that there is modern day slavery going on at this age of time. I just came across this documentary and am shocked at the sheer number of them kept captive on the private islands and on the boats. I am also suspecting government bodies are involved not only in thailand, Myanmar but also Indonesia.

Thank you Vice. I'm in Thailand and I tell tourists that seafood is hugely overfished here with no regard for sustainability, and now I learn that it also involves slave labour. The Thais are wonderful people but I'm aware that some can be very cruel. Human nature, I suppose.

I completely agree with you. It's disheartening to see how little regard there is for sustainability, especially when it comes to overfishing and the involvement of slave labor. It's a sad reality that some people can be cruel, even in such a wonderful country like Thailand. The government's ignorance and lack of action only exacerbate the problem. Many locals have been sounding the alarm for years, sharing their firsthand experiences of declining fish populations. It's frustrating to witness the prioritization of short-term profits from tourism over the long-term sustainability of the environment. It's high time we recognize the importance of protecting our natural resources and make conscious efforts to promote sustainability.

I remember when I was little there were lots of people in my village worked on fishing boats in Thailand illegally. When they arrive at the place that they supposed to work, the boss took their passport and never actually giving it back. There was one guy next to my house never come back here in Cambodia for years and never send any salary here, his family cannot even contact him. Little did they know that he was killed( as one of the worker who escaped told ). They had never get any salary, no resting time and not enough food to eat. They basically never step their feet on land since they were on boat for years. They have to work even when they're sick and got abuse daily. Many are suffering, I hope it can be solved. Peace!

I worked on fishing boats in Alaska, and it was very dangerous so I can only imagine what it was like for them. We always said I could easily push you over and no one would ever know, this most have been horrifying for them!

30:05 is absolutely true. This is a real problem in South East Asia. In Indonesia, a video of dead fisherman dropped in the sea shocks public. They said that fishermen works 18 hours a day and some of them even sleep while standing.

I lived in Thailand more than a decade - with Thai people not westernized colonies It's not as bad as India in terms of caste system. But the middle class definitely benefits from cheap prices from exploited and poor population from Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia - and North Eastern who have poor economy and seasonal rice farming. Minimum wage does not apply to them. The upper class - which seems to be mostly Chinese immigrants (3+ generation) for the business role, and inherited rich Thai landowner roles - are the best at leading these businesses with high profit margin and agressive practices. In terms of illegal fishing, Chinese fishing vessels are hard to beat - although probably Thai ones dominate the surrounding seas, Chinese are in all oceans - and considered to contribute two thirds of ocean plastic waste. I really feel Thailand came under scrutiny because it's a small country easy to bully while China would freak out and lash out (as they did often) if ever threatened the same way to control their pollution, work conditions and overfishing

Indian caste system is not slavery. It is just they do not have social mobility then. But they have their own settlements, farms and etc. And with the introduction of reservations in public sectors and public education a lot of low caste people came up in their lives. As the population is large it may seem they are treated same during the British time but it is not accurate and the situation of low caste people are developing economically and politically. Slavery is not a term to describe their current situation moreover what is shown in this video is extreme exploitation.

I doubt Thai sea food makes it's way out here. But I was going through my baby's clothes to figure out what all she's outgrown already & I saw something made from bangladesh. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I guess me working at that Nike jersey warehouse isnt exactly the same conditions but once I quit this car parts place bc I was sweating so bad, itching fiber glass into my skin & yeah they had water everywhere. But that's bc ppl could get heat stroke in there & I guess that's still not comparable but I guess I'm treading on sounding annoying asf. I guess I still learned something. That I can do absolutely nothing about

There is a people try to tackle this problem such as Patima (in this clip), Paween, Rangsiman Rome, etc. However, this problem is hard due to the current junta government. Some have to seek asylum abroad. Moreover, another form of human traffficking is illegal working abroad like in South Korea, Cambodia, Malaysia, etc. The process is same as fishing industry. There is a broker as the medium to get to work, which you can find in the social network. The example related job is scammer, masseuse, sex worker, etc.

Hmong went there for refuge during the Vietnam War and so forth due to communism in Vietnam. Then the Hmong/Miao were provided support by certain places like Buddhist temples, however I read they still struggled to gain citizenship.

I stayed in Phuket at a resort recently that was roughly 300 USD a night. It had a nice big open parking lot at the entrance and there were air vents here and there. I was curious and peeked into a vent , to my horror I could see a facility underneath that stank of rotten meat and there were 10s of people without gloves or boots in inches deep water cleaning plates and utensils. Horrible and rest of my trip was ruined by the thought of those poor people in utter filth.

That's all true. I actually came close to being in one of those boats myself when my family business went bankrupt back in 2004. Luckily, I chose to pursue other job opportunities instead. I remember hearing similar stories from a local fisherman who happens to be my close friend's uncle. I live on an island south of Thailand, and these rumors and stories have been circulating among the survivors. That's why most of the labor these days comes from neighboring countries of Thailand. Unfortunately, there are still people living in poverty who become victims of these situations. The Thai military is always involved in these types of stuff, which is why people in Thailand are putting up a strong fight against them.

Given the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico and Latin America, how can we be sure that modern-day slavery never happened on American soil? I'm sure it'd be far worse than in other Asian countries, like those of drug labs. Several years ago, local news in America stated that authorities had shut down the factory to assist several Thai workers who had never been paid. A US court ordered the factory owner to repay wages as well as compensation for them.

I was in Thailand for 1 month and thailanders are the sweetest and kindest people I've ever met in any country. I love love love Thailanders and it makes me so sad to see any Thailander suffer. I pray that God send his angels to rescue these fishermen and opens the doors of heaven and blesses these beutiful fishermen with good jobs , mental health and healing from all the abuse they endured. I also pray God opens the doors of heaven and blesses these fishermen with good homes , good jobs and good people around them, in Jesus name I ask for these things Lord ,amen.

There are some Thai job recruiters that went to recruit people from Laos, a country where jobs is hard to find, and if they found a job they only get paid about $70 a month. One Laos man got scam for the job, he was captured 19 year on boat and never once got paid. One day big boss took him to shores in BKK due to the death in the family of the boat owner during first year of Covid. He got a chance to be out by himself a little, and he ran away and cut a taxi driver, and he told her driver the story. Luckily, the taxi driver rushed and drove him away from the scene. All the way from BKK to northern part of Thailand Isan. The driver was nice enough to give him money so he can fled to Laos. He’s home country. The men now live in a temple, where he only have a couple outfit of spare clothes and barely anything to eat each day. The temple in Laos are not as lucky as in Thailand, where they have lots of food given by the people. I hope who ever behind all these will soon get in the hand of justice

Life in Asia is not worth anything. I live here and love the continent but the way minorities are treated is crazy. Whether it is Thailand, China or Indonesia, all very similar. The poorest suffer the most. Extremely lawless and corrupt.

As tragic and horrifying as this is, would someone, for example, walk into a major supermarket somewhere around the world, ask the fish seller if the fisherman was trafficked/abused and expect a plain-faced "Yes" answer? Slavery and exploitation are real, the issue of eradicating them is nearly impossible if the retailer/wholesaler doesn't do something affirmative against it. Still though, awareness is good

This has been happening for so long (and right out in the open). Any diving tourist in the world has passed many of these ships when diving in the Gulf of Thailand. I'm surprised this is just coming to light now, via VICE.

You speak of the shameful slavery, but you let aside another important fact. Thailand, along with Vietnam and China, litterally plunder other countries sea exclusive zones, thus bringing fish and seafood shortage to others too... These criminals (the main bosses, not the poor slaves !) should be heavily hit with criminal sentences and rot in jail for years !

Seen it with my own eyes. Watch Burmese working at a little resort on a small island. They ate what was left that the dog didn't. Out of the dog dish. Order extra food and gave it to them. Next morning cook ( THAI LADY poison me. Two days and nights on my knees puking. The workers told me they work all high season then the owners call immigration and they get sent back to Myanmar to be severely beaten and arrested. Although not all Thai people are like this. 95% are the kindest,generous, lovely people I have ever met.

i have lived in Thailand for almost 18 months. I see migrant workers all over the country such as construction sites, shopping mall employees, security guards etc. Not everything is forced labor but when a person is working 30 days a month and only earning less than 300 dollars a month and trying to send money back to their family where companies like Western union also charge large broker fees then you draw your own conclusions that these people are not really free. I live near MBK Mall and I estimate more than half the staff in that mall are Burmese that are paid very little for working non stop daily. My sad observations is the Thais consider themselves a higher caste than the migrant workers and these people really have for the most part a life of suffering and exploitation. They have no ability to complain as many are illegally in Thailand. The few times i tried to speak to migrant workers on construction sites they were fearful to speak with me (many Burmese speak good engilsh) and i was yelled at by the foreman or owner in what appeared to be broken chinese Enghilsh

Did you know during covid lockdown migrant workers were locked onto Thai construction sites for weeks and guarded. They were left without food or water. Foreigners living there heard them screaming and pleading and were the ones to finally get them some help.
