The Wyle House, designed by architect John Rex in 1961, is a striking example of mid-20th century architecture.
It harmonizes with the natural landscape of its 3,000-acre ranch setting through its use of local materials and thoughtful design.
The residence retains its original furniture, created specifically for the house by famed woodworker Sam Maloof.
The land, initially one-third of its current expanse, was purchased in 1959 and became the foundation of a farm started by Stephen's father.
The family was introduced to John Rex by a friend who was intrigued by their desire to build a home in such a remote area.
Constructed primarily from wood, glass, and granite sourced on-site, the house stands a few hundred yards from where the granite was dynamited.
Stephen fondly remembers participating in the stone dynamiting and foundation work during his childhood summers, alongside adventures such as camping, horseback riding, and enjoying family time at the ranch.
The Modernist design of the house, with possible Japanese influences from one of Rex’s draftsmen, features expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and a unique umbrella-shaped roof.
Granite elements are prominently featured throughout the home, with the conversation pit and fireplace serving as the focal points.
Today, the Wyle House is available for visitors to experience through Airbnb. The property offers an immersive retreat, showcasing architectural brilliance, period-specific furniture, and meticulously landscaped surroundings.
