Modern House Part 19- Pick-up work, small change, treads and risers, making the best of a short week

Closer and closer, with the scaffold up now I can access the final bits of plywood and finish the strong wall connections by installing the correct grade of bolt that I didn't have when I set them.
I also install the final treads, risers and landing plywood from the main floor to the upper floor. The stairs are angle front so there is no overhanging lip but instead the toe recess is created by angling the riser out at what works out to 7-8 degrees. for the tread I rip up 1-1/8" plywood and although thick since it's plywood I use a solid 2x8 riser to carry the edge. The outside stair stinger is doubled with a double stiffback added and all surfaces are glued and nailed. In all this provides an excellent base for the finish hardwood treads and risers as well as a solid backing for any intermediate railing posts that need to land on a tread.
As always, thanks for watching and I'll be back next week with at least one more part to the series before I pull off to work on other projects. There will be more parts after that but only as they happen but there is no schedule for those parts yet. Lots of interesting work coming up that I hope you will enjoy as well.

Hey thanks, that's the third truck it's been on in roughly the same location. the mount keeps it pretty much dry although I lube it frequently anyway. The best thing about it is I'm not running into it all time because it's out of the way:-)

Probably will get a bunch of it in there but I'll only be on site to help move them around and crane them into position for the window crew. I for sure will film the moving of the crane as It goes to its' next job (Which is a fun one:-)

I should get a positive placement nailer. Extending my garage right now to add a 3rd garage and deepen the existing garages another 10 ft since I have a milling machine, lathe, welding table, etc in there. Hand drove 75 feet of CS16 strapping today with a 10D in every hole. At least I have a good hammer!

Ugh dude, Thats like 1000 nails! So it might show up in a later video but since the tecos really don't fit into cs straps that well I just use my framing nailer most of the time for cs types :-) For this job I bought a metabo 36v teco gun. It worked flawlessly until the guide slide broke off on a heavy 12ga hanger. Got the replacement part in the mail and the piece was so buried in the gun it was almost a complete disassembly to replace it and I took apart the wrong piece and the thing exploded in my kitchen. Poor design all around, shame they are the best performing cordless nailers out there but i'll never buy another.

My goal from the start was to make the content or video subject the focus in the hopes it would carry itself thru and so far I think it's working as I feel I can still stand at the back of the room so to speak as the projects come together. I'll just keep my head down for another 6 months and then see if that still holds up:-) I do appreciate you and everyone else who have stuck with this series, It makes it way more fun to get the camera gear out of the truck every day:-)

the designers of that unwrenchable hold down thingy ought to be locked in a stockade where you can free yourself, but only by loosening a nut you can barely reach with a wrench that has to be repositioned after every 1/32 turn

I'm assuming the inspector (if required in your state) will accept photo's showing the finished nailing of the strong wall nail plates, prior to sheeting :) Nice site made spanner by the way. I'm sure the supplier sells a bespoke version, but I hate to think how expensive that one would cost :) Really enjoying this series, I'll probably go back and watch it again from the beginning once it's completed.

Totally required and Ironically I pinned up photos just today for them showing the install. Sometimes burying things like that is unavoidable and they are usually pretty chill about things if they see you are being thorough everywhere else. I'm really glad this build has been a hit with you, It definitely makes me think a bit more going into my other jobs about how to best document it.

Very curious re that Simpson wall thingy … if it’s so “engineered”, does it have an actual torque requirement ? I read all the comments and this in particular doesn’t seem to be addressed. Also, IS there an expensive, bespoke wrench available? love the build and yo style ✌️

That's an excellent question and no, I have never found a torque spec or a wrench for one and personally I think they avoid it by crafting the panel in such a way that it actually remains a wood bottomed panel and the steel bracketry does not make contact with any other hard surface so it's a 'soft' join as it were and a torque target zone would be too ambiguous. It's more likely that it would noted as turn-of-nut and that's how I treat it. I've assembled larger Simpson branded moment frames before that used torque indicating washers so I know they are thorough about things. In all honesty I would be a good time watching someone even trying to get a torque wrench on it in the first place:-) Thanks for checking out the series!

Might be a dumb question...those walls where you had to punch a hole for your straps prior to lifting, do those holes get repaired or just sided over?

The siders will take care of it with the sticky paper under the rain screen and the spray foam will take care of the rest.

They are shear wall panels that are strong enough to replace long sections of conventionally built wall which allows for more windows or other openings. I saw your earlier comment about Shoyan, I watch him as well and have drooled over just those flat offset ratchets of his. Unfortunately they would not fit either. Even a conventional box end wrench won't work. If it even fits in the hole the flared neck can't make enough of a sweep to tighten the bolt. It's just the dumbest thing ever.

So the saw itself is a Homedepot emergency buy Rigid (don't like it) when the previous bosch (loved it) died mid job. The table is made by Rousseau as are the outfeed tables. the stand alone table was a chopsaw table by the same company that I just put a solid top on. I've replaced all the top with MDO plywood since it's lighter than the formica'd mdf that comes with them and it holds up better in the rain. I just keep modifying different saws to fit into it as needed..

That's a great Idea and for the record I loathe working with that stuff. It was never proposed and I wonder about the coverage, I know they will foam the insides but on some of the beams they are so wide the entire wall sits outboard of the web so probably better to ensure coverage with the polyiso.
