Thanks for showing this house. Having lived in Tokyo myself in the 80’s and 90’s, and having had some wealthy acquaintances, I have naturally seen some very nice houses while there but none could quite match this one. Also I have to say that the Omotesando/Harajuku area was always at the very top of my list of areas I wanted to live in. Unfortunately however I could not even afford a little shoebox apartment in that neighborhood so I settled on Meidaimae. Still, I was close enough that I could get to Harajaku in about 10 or 15 minutes on my Mountain Bike.

I agree. It’s not with out it’s charm but for $8 million I’d have expected fixtures and finishes to be higher end. The entry closet gave me Ikea vibes and the blinds reminded me of my first apartment circa 2004. I’d definitely be making some upgrades if I bought this property.

Well it would be a pretty bland and boring world if everyone had the exact same tastes in housing, clothing, and cars, now wouldn’t it. In any case, the fact that something does not meet your own personal tastes does not make it “bad”. I have always preferred very modern architecture myself but the huge majority of people here in the USA are like you and prefer much more conventional and mundane cookie cutter designs. But lets face it, arguing over which style of architecture is “better” is like arguing about which flavor of ice cream if better. Still, as someone who has actually studied architecture in school and who has an architectural mind I can tell you that there is nothing even remotely “awkward” about the way the windows are laid out in this house. There is also nothing “willy-nilly” about the layout as another person mentioned. If you want to see awkward and inefficient layouts just look at some of the average houses and apartments in parts of Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. It’s as if some of these places were designed by people with no architectural training whatsoever. Anyway, while I personally would have done some things differently on this house there are also many aspects of the design that I really love.

So glad you all spoke about the "intangible" aspects of the home along with the Architecture. The way a place feels is such a byproduct of the way a space is configured, appointed, and interconnected that it is easy to miss that someone designed it to be that way. That is what an architect does. Nice house. If you want a home to FEEL a certain way - ask an architect to help. Best line: Sharla at 3:48 falls in love with a bathroom fixture... watch her face for that whole segment. Yes, basement room was a little odd, panic room a bit awkward, but dark toilet #2 and kitchen were wonderful. Dog petting is at least 100% better!

The play room is AWESOME!!! I can totally see it as a room for all things PS5, karaoke, maybe even just to watch telly. The bathrooms seem very well spread out. And I like how the architect incorporated and used all angles to allow natural sunlight inside. The house feels like home and not a cell block with sleek modern lines (if you catch what I mean). The T-shaped piping in the walk-in closet is support due to the potential weight. Such a long run of pipe may bend over time if you put enough weight on it. I would also think it adds stability if you happened to accidentally pull down harshly. Our closet rails pulled out of the walls twice during my childhood due to the combination of winter grab and rough use. The weight just eventually loosened the drywall screws and brackets.

Such odd choices....mosaic tiled walls and tiled floors in the two rooms you would want to feel the most cozy in (bedroom/living room). A panic room that can be accessed by climbing through the massive holes in the ceiling (that would be the first thing to go, it would open up the room so much more). It seems more like a Japanese thing but i hate vertical blinds and think they look dated. A bedroom on the third floor that looks like a bunker with the odd windows. The stainless steel kitchen (one of the places where a nice tiled backsplash would be appropriate and would look nice!). The random basement room (it has a bar but at the same time it's too small for parties and too out of the way). All the money to build a custom house with super high ceiling but yet didn't think to make the door to the balcony barely more than 5 and a half feet.

I loved the aesthetic style of everything in the house, except for the torture basement. Honestly, that minimal look is what I love the most about japanese architecture.

for a massive house with massive window space the vertical blinds and manual blinds suck, that's just something to get tangled and break and fall, leaving gaps in your light. replace those with remote blinds or crazy windows that frost with a flick of a switch or something.

I feel that there is more to that basement than just that one room and bar area. Since the floors above are so large that area felt small. I feel like there is some hidden rooms down there. Maybe a utility room or something.

I actually like how beautifully designed this house is, not sure about tiled walls, but staircase as a core connecting element of the house looks very cool, prefer it to the apartment that Chris showed in his video to be honest. I would turn that basement into a VR/gaming room, makes a chill hangout spot too.

So why does a house with 4 levels and with this price doesn't have an elevator?
@R_Chee17

because there is no space! it’s so cramped and small, besides the nice materials and the location, this house is not worth that crazy much money in my opinion. But it is Japan, so small housing is normal 😅

I kept thinking, what if they were injured and couldn’t maneuver around the stairs? Not very handicap friendly. Also, isn’t a basement a structural risk because of all the natural disasters in Japan (earthquake/tsunami)?

Maybe because this house was built decades ago and renovated recently. There are many 4-5 story buildings like that in Tokyo.
