I had classical snob friends who would look down on Jazz except for the MJQ. MJQ seemed to be okay with them because it was almost like classical music. Ugh! Despite them, I continued to listen to MJQ because there was a lot of there there. TY for the post.

about 30 years ago saw Milt Jackson at Yoshi's in Oakland... had table in the front row. Could even see the rings on his hands as he played - and he played absolutely perfectly - sweet, smooth, intoxicating. My favorite concert of all time....

The first part of John Lewis is so sensitive and beautiful. It always surprise me the way that he embroidered the high notes and how he is rhythmically balancing the off beat phrases. Pure Genius !!!

Согласна с Вами полностью! Чистый Гений! Чувствует ритм и так тонко балансирует на волнах Музы, открывая для нас новый мир красок!

My late friend, when talking about the MJQ and specifically John, would say "the educated fingers of John Lewis!". May they all rest in peace ❤...

Wonderful. I first heard them in the 90s on the radio and was taken back. I grew up in the 50s listening to Mom & Dad's Big Band Swing 78s and it hooked me on this genre. Does anyone know if Henry Mancini was influenced by MJQ for his Peter Gunn music?

++Eddie Welch I know that the MJQ's music, and especially John Lewis' piano-playing, might be described as cerebral, but that really doesna explain how the hell chess got into a cluster of memories that include sex and champagne!

Well for the record, the first version by a fantastic great pianist Gene Harris & renowned bassist Ray Brown, the number as old as jazz music, more like a national anthem related famous artistes worldwide. This particular version by a group of fine jazz band by a name Modern Jazz Quartet. Happy listening.
