I did actually purchase one of the Cazoo Tesla Model 3 SR+ recently. Turned out to be a bit of a bargain with just under 9000 miles on it. Also it happened to be one of the, "unicorn " ones on a 71 plate that has the newer LFP battery, and performance rear motor, before it was changed to a less powerful rear motor in the spring of 2022. Remainder of full basic 4yr car warranty, and 8 yr battery and motor warranty transferred over as well.

I decided - after 20 months of driving other EVs and assuming the T was just for snobs - to be sucked into the latest 0% finance deal on inventory NEW cars. I went for and would put a couple of arguments forward as to why the “Standard” RWD, bottom-of-the-range is the winner in my eyes: 1 - LFP battery…. No nickel, no cobalt option….there’s more cobalt goes into my ‘phone, FFS, or a tank of Range Rover 🤷🏻‍♂️ 2 - invites, or even NEEDS, to have regular charges to 100%. So if you were going to “look after” an NMC battery which would have the longer range and only use 80% of that….. well does 100% (about 270 miles) make as much sense? 3 - charging speed…. Although a little slower at peak, I have still seen 100 miles added in 10 minutes, and that was on one of the slower V2 superchargers 🤷🏻‍♂️ 4 - the cheapest car still gets all the goodies, including heated seats front AND REAR, powered tailgate, all the software…including the weird thing of regularly updating your car 🤨 5 - it’s no slouch if you just drive it around in “Chill” mode all day long They’re not for everyone, of course, but seeing videos from a well-known mobile mechanic on the state of 200,000+ mile cars, you can’t really go wrong - and no complaints so far from me on Chinese build quality 👍🏻

We had an early id3, changed for a new MG4 Trophy (which I really didn't like at all) but when the Tesla became affordable recently as you've just mentioned we got ourselves a Long Range (as we don't have home charging and it just made more sense). It is the best car I've had in fifty + years of driving - just watch the insurance though - ouch!..

@@mikadavies660 - it was good to drive, the handling was excellent, but mostly it was the unrelenting gloom of the interior and the clunky infotainment system. @Petelmrg Fair enough... The ID3 is great as long as the infotainment behaves. Clearly VW is a different level to MG. Which is what the salesman couldn't get... It just wasn't finished good enough. Maybe in a few years when they up their standards a bit more. Tesla is a totally different thing... I fancy the Model Y but at the moment my budget isn't there.

I'm hankering after a Polestar 2, my wife has decided she now likes the Model 3. We've found some affordable ones on PCP, but then a quick insurance quote shows the 3 would cost us twice as much as the 2, which is not much more than our current Ioniq 38kW. There's a lot to consider. Another useful video. Nice work, keep em coming.

Be wary as over 100 000 miles means there is no longer ANY warranty. As the drive train and battery is 8 years OR 100 000 miles, whichever comes first. The official Tesla used, although they are expensive, if you look carefully you can see they come with Enhanced Auto pilot, which is a £3000 option otherwise. Also they come with an extra year of warranty too.

Worth mentioning that Tesla seem to drip-feed updates rather than an annual refresh, so always worth checking the exact car. Also, older SR+ models have the motor from the performance model where as later ones use the LR motor, with 0.5 seconds decrease in performance (but bigger battery so extended range).

I wish Tesla would allow their EVs to be used like Powerwall batteries. It's all their proprietary technology so they can control the battery lifecycle and don't have to wait for the future v2h standards. I would be looking immediately for a Tesla 3 if they did this because it's stupidly hard to get a second Powerwall right now. If Tesla won't do it then I will be a v2h tart and go with a cheaper vendor when v2h becomes a reality. Also I've heard of Tesla being a bit nasty with cars that are sold outside of their website - like not transferring over 'software options' like full self driving. Is this true in the UK?

There are good engineering reasons why it is not use your car battery as a home battery. 1) You have "limited" charge cycles for batteries. 2) Car batteries are designed to be compact high discharged batteries, while home batteries are designed to allow high charge cycle and can be tech that is less compact.

In 2019 M3 LR was a more obvious buy against the 2019 SR+ but the current LFP SR+ at 100% SOC doesn't have much different range to an 80% charged NMC LR. Main differences in real life are acceleration, charging speed, 4wd, higher mileage warranty (120,000 vs 100,000 for battery and drivetrain) and the slightly better audio. Not sure how much difference there is insurance wise.

The absolute worst thing about Teslas is the insurance. The prices for EVs are high enough but insurance groups for the basic Model 3 is 48! (This is 48 out of 50!). Dual motor or performance versions and you are looking at group 50! Even the step up from group 48 to 50 is HUGE. So if buying a tesla be wary of insurance costs as it can be a deal breaker.

@R2D888

@antwnpowell In Britain insurance groups are 1 to 50. 50 being the most expensive. For example, a Ferrari would be group 50! You are also assigned a letter with the group number. A Ferrari would be 50E the "E" meaning it exceeds security requirements. A long range or performance Tesla model 3 is a 50u. In this case the "U" means, far from security requirements! A tesla model 3 SR+ is a 48U so quite high up the insurance price scale. Things like age, occupation and where you live also make a difference in what you pay. Personally I have a fair amount of driving experience (no claims) middle aged, living in London, and a profession that would rank as middle to low tier in terms of insurance risk. For a 50U group car I would be quoted nothing less than £1000 per year. (Roughly the same in euros).
