@JaxsonGalaxy7 жыл бұрын
I used to do this every halloween. I'd put baby powder in my jack-o-lanterns and blow into a pvc pipe and make the face of my jack-o-lanterns shoot flames. The seal on your paint can doesn't matter at all, what's the most important is making sure 1. your flame is far enough away from your air injector as to not blow it out and 2. blowing as hard and as fast as you can to get the perfect cloud of the air/fuel mixture. This also works with sawdust (or metaldust if you're brave/stupid.) You just want the fuel to be as fine as possible so it suspends in the air and makes a uniform distribution.

Another example of a dust fire is Washburn Mill explosion if 1878. The building is still standing (partially) and the explosion occurred when a machine broke and started to catch fire, igniting the fine flour particles in the air, resulting in the almost entire destruction of the building. It is now a museum call the Mill City Mueseum, located in downtown Minneapolis, minnesota

when I was in senior school my chemistry teacher gather us around a quality street tin with a hole in the top and bottom. she then put a hose on the gas taps they use for Bunsen burners, and fed gas in for about 20 seconds, covering the top hole, she then lit the gas coming out the top. this caused a three inch flame to appear, this occurred because (to my class' surprise) there wasn't enough oxygen in the can to cause an explosion. eventually the flame shrank down and then; BANG the lid shot straight up and smacked into the ceiling, about 4 inches from florescent tube. IT WAS BLOODY AWESOME!

There’s a museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota. And part of the museum and building history is the building being a flour processing plant and one night a spark from a machine mixed with the flour/grain dust and the entire building was set on fire, blowing out the windows of the buildings around and you could hear it for miles. The first fire (that one) was in 1878. Then there was a second one in 1991 when the building was abandoned and no longer in use. It’s called The Mill City Museum if you want to learn more about it.

I live in ks and in fire school we learn a lot about this due to the high volume of grain elevators and mills. One thing that you cant see is that most of the explosions that your seeing is actually the secondary explosion. When you first blow into it it hits the flame and flashes. When this flashes it causes a shock to the powder that is still settled and that pushes it into the air. This is the explosion that causes the larger portion of the damage. Look up grain elevators explosions. Its actually really interesting. We just had one local about 2 years ago.

The powder fireball and the grain silo are two different occurrences. The powder is where it becomes suspended and pops the top. The grain silo was a backdraft; where it was burning for long enough that it burned away the oxygen. When firefighter attacked the fire and fed it with O2/water, the burning grain and smoke was past it's ignition point, so it reignited with the abundance of O2, "exploding".

Container also helps keep the aerosolized mix pressurized, which increases the reaction rate for a faster burn. It's the double-whammy of pyro-mixes being contained that helps them burn ridiculously fast, and then releasing it all in a short frame of time that say, differentiates black powder burning on it's own(whoosh) vs contained in a brass cartridge(boom).

Kind of how you can take a flame to diesel fuel (Which if I'm not mistake is #2 Fuel Oil) - it has to be atomized and sprayed before it'll becomes combustible. Gasoline on the other hand - just move a flame near it and you make is sound like a dog - woof! That's because gasoline turns to vapor on it's own. Oh and you could bolt a piezo-electric igniter in there. And maybe a stirring fan of some sort. Then you'd get it to light up no problem. But there I go - the engineering mind kicks in. And the little ping that Murphy did was priceless.

Hey, Modern rogue. Try using corn starch, I have amazing success with that stuff. I once made a "powder flame thrower" by getting a PVC pipe, heating up the end then squashing it so the opening is flat. Then I put some corn starch inside, hold a torch on the flat end, then blow it so the powder is forced through the flat end and makes a cloud which is then ignited by the torch. It works every time.

The problem with the flour is the moistness, if the flour becomes to moist the particles will stick together. Leave the flour in the open in direct focus of sun light to evaporate the moistness(microwaving and going overboard on the time might cause it to burn or catch fire, but could work). When the flour is dry it will spread each particle easily and become more flammable.

I believe that when a powdered substance is has that precise fuel to air mix it is called conflagration. It can happen with a lot of powders you wouldn't think to be flammable, things like corn starch and flour are two good examples.
