Penn Jillette has a lot to say about this as both juggler and magician. He says both skills are impressive because they require way more practice than the audience can imagine anyone ever doing. The difference is that the juggler shows you the skill while the magician hides it.

@@buzz25 That would be because he believes he does not trust himself to do it in moderation. And that's fair reasoning. I've known both people that know how to smoke weed in moderation, and people that the act of smoking weed is a defining characteristic of the person to their detriment. Imagine if Penn was correct about himself and he smoked weed to excess. He likely wouldn't be as successful as he is now.

"He says both skills are impressive because they require way more practice than the audience can imagine anyone ever doing." this is something i've always liked about penn's attitude to the arts. i had the same realization as i kid. got interested in magic, learned some crappy card tricks and coin vanishes, but then saw sideshow acts and realized "why trick people into thinking i can make fire from nothing when i can ACTUALLY eat and manipulate fire? why use a gimmicked knife to fake piercing myself for a trick when i can ACTUALLY hammer nails into my face? that's WAY COOLER for everyone involved"

wait, isn't the lesson most men are taught specifically that it's ok to fail so long as they persevere? you know, the whole tortoise and the hare thing from ancient greece? i'm pretty sure what you're talking about is the idea that men shouldn't tell people to rely on them if they are still prone to failing. or that you shouldn't brag about a skill you haven't mastered. or maybe that failure is not a thing to be respected on it's own, only people's responses to it? i really have no idea because i've never met a man in my life that was taught that failing publicly was bad in and of itself.

@@ClashBluelight I'm very glad you've had a positive experience as far as that goes; a lot of us were taught, directly or indirectly, that admitting any weakness or failure was a bad thing, and MEN CERTAINLY NEVER CRY. It's an unhealthy attitude, and I'm glad that society is LARGELY changing.
@ClashBluelight
@ClashBluelight 2 жыл бұрын
@@devikwolf i guess "a lot" of men is possible, but definitely not the majority. after all, the core tenant of christianity is repentance. aka opening up about personal failings both internally and externally. it's also the single most widespread religion in history, so i'd say that constitutes the majority of men. like i said before. it's not just me. i've literally never met a single man in my life who was taught something even remotely like this. i mean, if society largely subscribed to this idea, humanity would be extinct. there would only be sore losers in the world, and literally everybody would kill themselves because it's impossible to be the best at every single thing. that may seem extreme, but really. if you truly believed that you're either the best at everything you try, or you're a failure, where else could that possibly end up? we live in a hyper specialized society, so men are taught from a young age that they'll only be acceptably good at a few things. it simply isn't how people raise their kids. not now, not ever. tl;dr i wasn't just sharing a personal experience. i was pointing out the fact that this idea has been widely viewed as absurd for over 2000 years.

Such a common mistake among new jugglers. "I mess up when that third ball comes into play". You need to realize that, while you are juggling 3 balls, there is no 3rd ball, it's just a 2nd 1st ball. Then you can get into that one two one two rhythm. You only have 2 hands after all...

Yeah, it's fun I learned the minimum of juggling years ago, even juggled some lit, rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton balls. Gotta learn not to squeeze too hard or let the ball impact too hard when you catch otherwise you get burning alcohol squirting out everywhere. Not too dangerous if you know what you're doing, given that it's a relatively cool flame, don't panic and smother the flames when they get places you don't want them, things do heat up.

I learnt to juggle when someone explained to think of it as a tall picture frame, or stand in front of a large rectangular mirror (this worked the best), and try keep the balls within the frame and throwing to the opposite upper corners. The more balls there is, step back and keep them within the mirror frame...... I'm still rubbish tho 😐..... 🤣.

Only a novice juggler here, I actually found 3 balls to be easier than the "throw-throw-catch-catch," because the fluid motion means you don't have much time to over think it. I'm not necessarily good at it, and that's completely due to lack of practice, but just sharing my personal experience.
@Hubris2
@Hubris2 2 жыл бұрын
I'm amused that I taught myself to juggle similarly to what was shown here. 2 balls in one hand, and then moving up to 3 balls - but I learned by using a bounce against a wall so that the motion from each hand to the other went against the wall and then down to the second hand. I found it gave me just a little more time and a little more control to master the cadence/timing - before I tried actually keeping them all on the same plane.

Not a juggler, might try it out, but the throw throw catch catch seems like it would be the hardest as it's kinda where you develop the core technique. Once you have the core technique down, progressing is relatively easy and intuitive with most things.

i learned to juggle by standing very close to a wall (facing the wall) and throwing the bags WAY high up, almost to the ceiling. also using bags helped me A LOT because they don't roll away when you drop them. the wall prevents you from creeping forward, which apparently everyone does as they learn. it also helps a ton by completely removing a dimension you are throwing in.

Two tips for learning to juggle; 1. practice facing a wall; this way you cannot throw the balls too far out in front of you, this helps to make the catch easier. 2. practice over a table this way when you drop one you don't have to bend over or stop for as long to pick up the ball. 3.(one for free) practice with something that will not bounce or roll very well like bean bags or rolled up socks; less bounce means easier to pick up right away so you don't break your rhythm.

After I spent months practicing in high school and college, I learned to juggle 3 balls/clubs/random objects with no problem. I can maintain a cascade pattern indefinitely. I even learned how to do passing between two or more people (though I'm so out of practice I'd have to re-learn that skill) . But I've never been able to do a 4-ball pattern. That requires a different shift in neural programming that I was never able to accomplish.

The trick is definitely all in the throw. If you throw right, catching is easy. It just lands in your hand. With one or even two balls you can have wonky throws and catch it by shifting focus to each catch, but the secret to mastery is to throw so well that you never really have to think about catching it. I'm trying to learn five balls, and it's super hard because I have a locked in throw at eye level but for five balls I have to throw higher and I have to fully retrain the accuracy.

little tip for people learning how to juggle. Juggle over a bed and consider using something that won't roll away as easily like an actual juggling ball or a bean bag. It makes it so much nicer to recover when you drop something. Instead of getting all the way to ground or chasing your ball across the room, you can just reach over an pick it up.

As a juggler who teaches juggling for a living, I really don’t like how this guy teaches. His 1 ball teaching style encourages bad habits. He also talks about common mistakes but doesn’t address how to fix them. Finally my biggest pet peeve is that he stresses not dropping. While understandable, it is counterproductive to learning. It makes juggling very anxiety inducing when juggling is a very fun activity and dropping is a part of the process and in reality, no big deal.

If I could add a couple of tips for anyone trying this at home: Always throw to the same height. Don't chase the balls. Keep your upper arms still and bend from the elbow (helps to stop you from throwing the balls forwards).

I taught myself basic juggling with some old book and a lot of practice and I recommend standing in front of a wall. The balls don’t roll as far when you drop them and it trains you not to throw them away from yourself, which seems to be a common issue.

This inspired me to try juggling again. It's a nice flex besides being hella fun.

When I teach people to juggle I start them with catching the first ball before throwing the second. That way you learn the pattern before things get stressful.

I tride a number of time using balls and just couldn't get it. Then a pro juggler taught me how to juggle with extremely light silk like cloths. The difference was, rather than throw them to a consitant spot, I was to lift it to a what ever height I felt comfortable with and release it, and useing the upmost less effort catch it in the other hand. The do the same in reverse, catching it in the other hand. Once I got use to it with one. Adding in another cloth aka one in both hands repeated the same process of lifting, dropping and catching. Stop and repeat until I could increase my speed. Then adding a third was like falling off a log. Once I got lifting my cloths to an hight I was comfortable with. Learning how to toss not throw a ball to the same hight was easy. Doing it with one ball, eventually getting to two. Took a bit longer because balls were heavier than the cloth. But once I got the hang of it, adding the third was a piece of cake.

I learned to juggle by taking three tennis balls outside and throwing them as high in the air as possible to get the pattern down. Then as I got better I made the pattern shorter and shorter.
