I randomly clicked this video years ago before I had any interest in whiskey and now I’m a blender working for a large craft distillery. Whiskey has become my life and this video here planted the seed that launched me on that journey. So thank you!

This was by far the clearest, easiest to understand, interesting and informative tutorial on types of whisky/whiskey. Thank you so much.

This is the single greatest introduction to whisky out there. Not only is Daniel, the guy with the magnificent beard, fun, knowledgeable and anti-snobbery (the holy trinity of teaching) he explains everything in such a sensible way while choosing some great examples to show how it turns out in the product. Also you guys are following along with interest and trying to learn but aren´t annyoing when chiming in. Honestly this was better than many tastings I have done even without drinking along. Good on you... go sit on your whiskey!

As an Irishman whose favourite whiskey is the Redbreast 12 years, I wholeheartedly recommend his starting choice.

I've realized that it doesn't really matter what topic is presented, it's always fun to listen to experts talk about a craft. Guys like this demystify a ton of the barrier to entry for us casuals.

Daniel certainly knows his stuff. In 2017 he was already talking about Henry Mckenna and now, 2019, that whisky gets the "Best Whisky" award at the San Francisco world spirits competition.

There are a few stellar whiskeys playing on the chocolate flavours from the micro distillary at middleton. The series is called method and madness. Using french limousine and chestnut to age the whiskey. If this appeals to anyones pallet id highly HIGHLY recommed it. also the redbreast lustau on the nose is unreall.

Also - the Whisk(e)ys in order of appearance, with a bit of research on my side: 1. 2:28 Redbreast 12 Years, irish single pot still. Unique Taste from a percentage of unmalted barley, which the irish used to trick the british tax system in the 1800`s. Regarded as a classic irish style. I have read at some point this styles availability is receding with Redbreast being one of its most revered figureheads - cant find that again, though. Historical explanation starts at 10:32 2. 6:40 (not tasted) Knob Creek 100% Proof (=57,15 %Vol vs. most bottles at 40 %Vol.) 9 Years (presumed) Named after a Creek near its Distillery. Part of Jim Beams "Small Batch" Program. 3. 6:55 Henry McKenna 10 Years Apparently was very famous in the early 1900's until the prohibition was declared and was known for its high quality. Today I found it often rated just under 4 of 5 - with many wondering why its score isnt higher and citing it as their go-to bourbon. Seems to be one of the most Iconic Bourbons. 4. 11:53 Whistlepig 10 Years, Straight Rye, People were upset to find Whistlepig was sourced from Canada and only finished aging in Vermont, when it is perfectly normal for young brands like Whistlepig to start like that. I could not find if they still do their whiskey like that, but Whistlepig is certainly held in high regards by customers in critics alike. All in all, I think I can tell customers genuinely rever these brands and we are looking at some good quality. What everyone personally prefers might differ from one to another, but these bottles seem to be a safe bet to be met with an at least pleasurable experience. The Wizard has chosen wisely.

This is an excellent video. I thought the nod to the origin of the word “whiskey” was great as well. Very good knowledge. Just so you know, uisce beatha is pronounced “ishka baha” rather than “oosca baytha”. I know it’s very pedantic but I love the linguistics of it. Anyway, great video! Keep it up!

its not just the wood that adds flavour. a speyside whisky gets its unique flavour from the local water used to cut down the high strength grain to the traditional 40/35% strength before it gets stored in oak barrels. an expert whisky taster (who isnt me lol) could tell you the region a scottish whisky came from by the unique flavour from the water in it alone. the irish stout was a way to circumvent the malted barley tax as well. they just roasted the grain instead

Red Breast is not single malt. It is a single pot still that is made of malted and unmalted barley unique to Ireland.
