Now do an episode on cutting competitions, where an abid competition demonstrates/teaches proper firm, and technique. And sorry to say this, but this episode felt unfocused. There were long stetches where the guy was working on the blade by himself, with Brian and Murphy only popping in now and again. It just didnt feel like their hearts were in it, until they got to see the finished product.

So it depends a sword can be made by melting metal, a sword from the Viking age where melted down then molded in a sand form. But working metal is what most people do now. Japanese swords where folded do make up for how bad of steel they use. It depends on what it was and when it was.

Truth, but i also think there is a level of respect given when someone says "this knife is extremely sharp" vs when they don't know how sharp it is. they're more apt to play more with a knife they think is dull than they are a knife that they know could very easily make them lose a finger. (They being, idiots that don't know how to treat any unknown blade, not they as in Jason and Brian)

26:24. I love how real that shot is. So many people think that making a knife is all glowing steel and swinging hammers and sparks and fire, but a huge chunk of it is exactly this. Just a dude at a grinder, not moving a whole lot for long periods of time. That doesn't even come close to working on the handle, furniture, polish, or final fit and finish. A wise man once said "knife making's dirty little secret is that it's mostly jeweler's work."

@@notforsaletoday1895 That is the literal translation, but there's a habit in German to call things by simple nouns that in English would be given proper nouns. Panzer, for instance, just means armor, but obviously in a conversation about WW2 it'd refer to tanks.

As others have pointed out, in a medieval weapons context a messer, also commonly referred to as a kriegsmesser, is a specific type of German sword characterized by a single edge and a knife-style hilt, like the blade in the video. In this case it'd be closer to a langesmesser, the one-handed type, but it still fits the bill
