This is probably the greatest opera ever written. I will be at the met opera on 10/17/21 I was drawn toward this opera by my grandfather and mother and uncle. He grandfather used to sing excerpts at bed time, At Music and Art HS in NYC graduated 1961 George Seaman a cellist turned me on to Russian opera .The tenderness and psychological drama--- The Russian church modes - the inventive orchestration all make this opera a miracle. Mussorgsky was some kind of an unschooled genius who tapped into a genre that emerged in the mid 19th century.

Many years ago, over 40, I enjoyed this opera at the Colón Theater of Buenos Aires: never forgotten! but I love russian composers and their music...

There have been so many versions of this it's pointless to favor one over the other.The music is so engaging that it stands by itself. They are all good. The George London recording didn't have the St Basil
