As a Defender 90 owner I absolutely love the 4x4 panda. Even the new one has a certain appeal. (And the Jimny.) With so many Battery Barges around is easy to forget that big isn’t alway clever! Small is beautiful , a Defender 90 is shorter than a BMW i3! TLBS is so refreshing. Showing us exactly what we didn’t realise we needed. Jonny’s enthusiasm, irrespective of what he shares with us is unlimited and shows us how much passion is out there for everyday vehicles. Thank you Jonny, and your team. I agree with you about the new Panda and Jimmy. Went out I'm a Panda and there was a Disco 2 in convoy with us. Both cars went all the same places without needing a tow. Of course the Disco is far more spacious and if needs be could have toward the Panda. The Panda wouldn't have towed a Land Rover but then for most people that won't be an issue.

You're 100% on-point about the ski resort part. I had the scariest drive of my life in one of these awesome little machines. Was in ski boots and hitching a lift in the French alps. A tiny French girl who looked about 16 pulled up in an old & rusty Panda 4x4. I threw my skis on the roof rack jumped in and off we went. Jesus, I've never been so petrified in all my life. We probably weren't going all that fast, but there was no slowing down for the bends. And these were hairpin bends with 500ft drops off the sides on icy mid-Feb alpine routes. Thankfully the skinny tyres stuck to the road like glue. This girl must have chain smoked about three cigs on our way up the mountain. After I got out I needed one as well. I was in such a befuddled state I even forgot to ask for her number.

Great episode! My retired friend in the french Alps has one that I went for a ride in. They live on the side of a mountain and he casually took us up and down what looked like a graded scrambling route full of loose rocks. No problem for the little panda. He and a bunch of his mates are also part of a Steyr Puch/ pinzgauer group. The latter are very impressive military spec off roaders. He took me for a ride in that too: we were going to join others at a mountain refuge high up the mountain for evening drinks then head home so we didn't bring anything with. We were crawling up these loose, steep tracks and suddenly a thunderstorm came upon us- biblical lightning and lashing rain. Not to mention it was now getting dark, the pinzgauer hesitated and stalled. It wouldn't turn on again.. we were at least an hour up and still had about 40 mins to go and nothing around but trees and lightning. Somehow he managed to get the engine to splutter into life and we nursed the temperamental pinz up to the refuge, by which time it was pitch dark and the others were getting ready for bed! We decided we would have to stay the night with them and I had to stuff newspaper down my socks and up my t shirt for warmth as I hugged myself lying on the table next to the fire. Good times!

After school a lot of school friends denied the service in the army and had to do a 1.5 year stint at public services. So of course there were races, Pandas 1000 and 850 class, rumours said that the Seat version was slightly faster. I now live in Switzerland and in those remote Mountain villages 4x4 Pandas are still used and a common sight. Because of the abilities, not for the lack if funds.

That was my first car, right there! A 1992 Fiat Panda 4x4, with slightly increased ground clearance and mud tires! My dad bought it as an extra car for the countryside, but I got to drive it in the city too. In the Italian countryside you still see so many of these, but at the time (this was towards the end of the life of the old Panda, mid-2000s) they were everywhere, by far the most capable off roader you could buy for that kind of money, and arguably the best in the narrow, bendy and steep tracks of the Roman countryside. I was always impressed by its performance, the fact it was so light made it so easy to go anywhere, and everytime something broke, it was very easy and cheap to repair. After that died, we got a Jimny in replacement, which ended up being my main car for a decade, and boy oh boy I miss that one too.

I think people who’ve not really had the opportunity to drive off road underestimate how important low weight is, much more so than any fancy terrain response or air suspension etc etc. Panda’s are very impressive when the going gets rough. Had a drive of one in the Alps during a MTB holiday after getting talking to a guide, seriously capable on very rough terrain. He said in the winter they where the only thing that was any good on a lot of the higher mountain tracks. Absolutely believed him. You should do more of this type of car if you can. Obviously the Jimny, but I would really love to see you drive a 2CV Sahara, if you can find somebody to let you drive one, I recon right up your street.

I live on the italian alps and let me tell you, these are the perfect cars for our narrow mountain roads, unstoppable. I've seen a lot of suvs stranded in the snow, never a panda 4x4. Whoever owns one now keeps it like a treasure and they sell for relatively high prices around here.

I really liked the simple off road shots at the end. Loved the way the Panda took the bumps - looked like great fun

I colour coded myself once with my car completely by accident just throwing any old things on to nip out to the shops. At the time I owned a beige Peugeot 405 and as I unlocked the car to get in I looked at the beige interior, looked down at myself and thought "hell no" and had to go in and change.

My first car was a second generation Panda which I really loved, so I’ve always had a soft spot for them. I’m not that fussed by most restomods but I think a subtly modernised, possibly EV Panda 4x4 would make a great daily

They are still brilliant and cost effective.

Clicked 'Like' after the thumbnail... Gotta love a Panda (4x4) and just know / knew this would be a good 'un :)

Completely agree with your thoughts about that cars should be smaller but roomy and fit for purpose. Have space, but don't take up space!

We had one as a beater pool car when I was working in forestry in the mid 90s, it could beat almost anything off road apart from maybe the Unimog !!

This is how the so called "crossovers" from today should have been. Just an unassuming fun little offroader that really works off road not just some big heavy hatchbacks on stilts with swollen wheel arches full of plastic just for the looks and no 4 wheel drive.

Absolutely. So true.

I learnt to drive in my ma's Panda 750L FIRE. It was such a hoot to drive - nimble and nippy the best words. Would love to get my hands on a non-rusty southern italian import and maybe do an electric conversion.
